Chapter 21

Back in her apartment, Sophia stood in the bathroom brushing her teeth, her reflection staring back at her like it was trying to remind her of something she should've remembered by now.

*You don't remember me.*

*I was drunk yesterday.*

She spit out the toothpaste, rinsed, and shut off the tap.

"He's hiding something," she muttered aloud.

But her voice didn't sound angry.

It sounded... scared. Like part of her already knew.

She padded barefoot down the hall, found Jaime already half-asleep on the couch, face buried in a bowl of popcorn.

Sophia sank into the cushions beside her.

Jaime cracked one eye open. "Sooo... was lunch boring or life-changing?"

"Somewhere in between."

Jaime grinned. "That means it was interesting. Spill."

But Sophia didn't.

Not yet.

She just stared at the TV, her mind elsewhere. Somewhere twelve years back. Somewhere she couldn't quite reach.
