Chapter 2

"I am the lead surgeon. It's all my fault. I'll go apologize to the family right away. Even if they want to cut me into a thousand pieces, I deserve it."

Vivienne immediately became agitated. She pulled him up again and glared at me angrily.

"Alaric, why can't you learn from Nolan? He may be young, but he's so responsible. How long are you, the real culprit, planning to hide?"

It was actually her who, in order to promote Nolan, had repeatedly snatched surgeries to boost his reputation. This time, she had set her sights on my pancreatic cancer surgical plan, which could reduce postoperative complications for patients.

I knew Nolan's medical skills were poor. No matter how Vivienne cajoled, threatened, or tempted me, I refused to hand it over.

A few days ago, Vivienne suddenly asked to meet me. She said she was wrong and wanted to apologize. She just wanted me to let Nolan in as a minor assistant.

To avoid conflict with her, I agreed. But I didn't expect it was a trap.

She deliberately ran over my leg with her car. Ignoring my mangled limb, she returned to the hospital with Nolan.

She announced to everyone that I had been in an unexpected car accident and was unable to perform the surgery, handing over both my patient and my surgical plan to Nolan.

To ensure the success of this surgery, Vivienne even assigned several skilled subordinates to assist him.

Nolan's overconfidence led him to throw a premature celebration. The next day, he arrived at the operating table reeking of alcohol.

Before the procedure even began, an error caused the patient to hemorrhage and die on the spot.

Now, not only does she show no remorse, but she's also secretly altered my plan and pinned all the blame on me.

This time, I didn't coddle her. I spoke up directly:

"There was nothing wrong with my plan. Nolan had been drinking before the surgery."

The room was stunned, all eyes turning to Nolan.

Nolan's eyes welled up with tears, looking wronged. A moment later, he nodded resignedly:

"Whatever the mentor says must be true."

"Vivienne, go ahead and announce that I was drinking."

"In this incident, let me be the only one to fall. After all, I'm just an unknown junior doctor. The professor is a renowned expert and a pillar of the hospital. He absolutely cannot fail."

With just a few sentences, he redirected the blame towards me once again.

Vivienne, seemingly heartbroken, wiped away his tears and feigned righteousness:

"Nolan, you're not at fault. I won't push you out to take the fall."

"I want to make it clear to everyone here that the hospital won't scapegoat anyone. Each person is the hospital's most valuable asset, and I'll treat everyone equally!"

The young doctors erupted in cheers, while the older ones, in an effort to fit in, offered halfhearted applause.

Seeing that the situation had been pacified, Vivienne breathed a sigh of relief.

Fearing I might say something else shocking, she claimed I wasn't fully recovered yet and ended the meeting.

Once she wheeled me back to my room and we were alone, she helped me lie down and sighed:

"I know you were put in an uncomfortable position today, but please, for the sake of my father who once supported you, help Nolan through this crisis."

"Whatever you want, just ask. Even if... you want to leave an heir for your family, I can bear a child for you."

"Think carefully about what you want. I'll leave you to rest now."

She tucked me in and turned to leave.

Watching her retreating figure, I didn't tell her that her father's sponsorship of me was just a kind lie I had told.

Ten years ago, Vivienne's family fell on hard times, and the hospital was on the brink of bankruptcy. They desperately needed to create the reputation of a genius doctor to save the situation.
