Episode 9

Project Nexus: Beyond Reality

Episode 9 : A False Alarm?

Renji walked quickly through the town streets, his thoughts racing. If pain in the game really affected real life, then the risks were much greater than they had imagined. He needed to check.

He soon found Kai at the blacksmith's shop, casually browsing weapons.

"Kai," Renji called.

Kai turned, raising an eyebrow. "What's up?"

Renji hesitated for a moment before asking, "Back in the fight… when you got hit, did you feel any pain? Like, real pain?"

Kai blinked, then laughed. "Of course I did. Getting stabbed hurts, man."

Renji frowned. "No, I mean outside the game. After you logged out, did you feel anything? Any lingering pain?"

Kai tilted his head, thinking for a second. Then, with a shrug, he pulled up his menu and logged out.

A few moments later, he reappeared, stretching his arms. "Nope. I feel completely fine."

Renji let out a small breath of relief.

"See?" Kai smirked. "You were overthinking it. The pain system in-game is just super realistic, but it doesn't actually affect us in the real world."

Renji nodded slowly. He still wasn't sure why the pain felt so immersive, but at least they weren't in any real danger.

"Alright," he muttered. "Guess I was just being paranoid."

Kai grinned. "It's good to be cautious, though. If something ever does seem off, it's better to check."

Renji glanced at the Iron Tusk in his inventory, remembering their decision to keep it for now. There was still a lot to figure out in this world.

But for now, everything seemed… normal.

A New Direction

Renji and Kai left the blacksmith's shop, walking back toward the town center where the others were waiting. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the streets of Hamlet. Despite his earlier worries, Renji couldn't shake the feeling that something about this world was too real—the weight of the sword in his hands, the crisp air, the distant chatter of NPCs.

As they approached, Airi, Eve, and Leon were sitting on a stone bench, discussing something. They turned to Renji as he arrived.

"You were gone for a while," Airi noted. "Something wrong?"

Renji shook his head. "Just checking something with Kai. No big deal."

Leon leaned back, arms crossed. "Well, while you were gone, we came up with a plan. We need to make some money if we want better gear."

Eve nodded. "Since we're keeping the Iron Tusk for now, we should take on some quests to make gold. There's a bounty board near the guild hall."

Kai grinned. "Finally, some action. What's available?"

Airi pulled up the quest menu, scrolling through the list. "Most of these are just small jobs—fetch quests, deliveries. But there's one that stands out." She tapped the description, and a holographic quest window appeared:

Quest: The Wandering Beast

A dangerous creature has been spotted near the outskirts of Hamlet. Adventurers are needed to track and eliminate it before it threatens the town.

Reward: 150 Gold + Rare Item Drop

Difficulty: ★★★☆☆

Kai whistled. "Now that sounds interesting."

Eve frowned. "It's a three-star difficulty quest, though. We don't know how strong the creature is."

Leon smirked. "Which is why it's perfect. If we want better gear, we need to take some risks."

Renji considered it. Their last battle had pushed them to their limits, but they had learned a lot. If they fought smart, this could be the challenge they needed.

"Alright," he said. "We take the quest."

A notification appeared:

[Quest Accepted: The Wandering Beast]

Airi stretched. "Then we'd better get some rest. We set out tomorrow."

As the team headed back to the inn, Renji glanced at the sky. He had a feeling this fight would be different. Something was waiting for them out there.

And he was ready.
