Weapons, the sole evidence of mankind's dominion. From a myriad of materials, they were able to forge countless tools with a purpose to create, alter and even—kill. Humans were frail but cunning, neither swift nor powerful unlike nature's titans which it had gifted fangs and claws. but like all others who dwell on the earth, they hold within themselves the intent and instincts to survive.
No longer were they mere prey, clinging to survival through their sheer numbers alone. The passage of time had paved the way for their evolution, from what can only spill blood through sharpened blades became instruments of war, destructive enough to burn cities to ruins and leave a trail of blood and ash in it's wake.
Then, along it came.
It was more than a hundred years ago when humans first encountered the anomalous substance they call Geonite, an element with properties comparable to the divine, the densest element on Earth discovered within the deepest part of the crust.
despite its absurd mass and density it had a strange state that makes it malleable, bending and stretching itself.
it defied the laws of physics itself and shattered mankind's concept of what was impossible.
Though it was not as simple as molding soft clay with one's own hands, It can only enter it's malleable state if it formed a link with a person's lifeforce, the sensation was indescribable, as if an invisible tether connected them to the very core of the mineral.
The greater the change of mass and size it undergoes, the heavier the burden placed on one's lifeforce. The process can easily exhaust an individual and in rare cases, inflict illness.
As humanity advanced overtime, this strange phenomenon was eventually explained through study, being the substance is able to assume a fluid-like state and change its own shape according to the person's will, with its precision and variety depending on the user's "resonance" with the element, the general term for it being shifting.
It was the only known way to manipulate the element and it did not yield to hammer nor flames, instead it's obedience is placed on sheer willpower alone.
Such discovery proved to be revolutionary for humanity, The lump of metal did more than just changed its own shape, it changed human history.
Humans established mining sites and quarries to obtain Geonite ore, Initially to study its properties and conduct research for science.
However, things took a turn for the worse, during their relentless pursuit, they unearthed something that should have stayed buried. Something that will forever alter the course of history.
After all, in this world, nothing was without conflict.
As if a way of cruelly maintaining balance to the world that was shifting for the better, from the soil emerged something far worse than the world had anticipated.
Monsters and beasts born of steel and stone took form and wreaked havoc throughout cities, Mankind's crude blades and primitive weapons which they were once so proud of could barely leave a scratch on their bodies let alone a dent in their thick armor-like skin.
It was as though nature was laughing at their faces, mocking their advancements, forging their doom from the same element that promised them ascension. Solidifying their fate as those who were never meant for victory and dominion.
—Geonite, the only element known to be able to deal damage to their impenetrable bodies. Their armor-like skin were composed of corrupted geonite that possess impurities, which the cause of is unknown to this day.
Waging war against the seemingly indestructible beasts, humans made use of the Geonite they possessed and turned them into weapons of mass destruction.
Time had long passed as they understood the potential of the element and it was not long before man had mastered its use. From blades, spears and arrows all the way to muskets and modern rifles. Shifting became more than a scientific phenomenon, throughout man's darkest era it eventually grew into an art of war, a divine technique, and man's greatest arsenal as long as one was able to conjure a thought.
For several years, mankind had been in constant war with the creatures they called golems, the land would randomly collapse from time to time and from the chasms they emerge to cause chaos. but humanity came prepared and established a new role in society, one that would carry a heavy responsibility, to protect the lives that they have built.
Chosen according to their strength and prowess to deal with the chasms, they are given the title of an "Exterminator". An order whose sole purpose is to eviscerate the golems, going in groups to charge into the chasms and rid of them using their shifted weapons and skills before the sentient stones born of wrath could even step foot on the surface. Dedicating their life to eradicate those who dwelled within the earthly abyss, there are also those that dedicate their lives to rebuild, The Construct Order, with a mission to rebuild damages and clean up the constant mess.
Designated into ranks according to their combat expertise and shifting capabilities the Exterminator order clear out these caverns with their life on the line. Some low level golems can be dealt with so much ease that even one Exterminator can take it out in a one-on-one fight, however, some golems possess incomparable power that could take down armies as well as cause tremors that can shake continents.
These monsters can only be slayed by a Pillar, the highest form of title given to an exterminator to symbolize the honor and heavy responsibility of wielding high level powers to protect humanity from threats.
Nations united together and faced off against these monsters throughout history. Mankind's greatest historical figures were at one point Exterminators themselves who had even attained the title of a Pillar, such figures were depicted in historical paintings like one where they were wielding a shifted weapon resembling an axe next to a cherry tree and a lifeless corpse of a beast golem below its shade.
In the current year 2067, the war is still ongoing, though people had learned how to adapt into the new life, the technology has advanced far enough for the creatures to be dealt with ease every time they appear but even that won't stop the golems, they continue to evolve, get stronger each day, they adapt to humanity's efforts and soon there will come a time when one of the side finally claims it's victory and end the conflict.
