Chapter 6

Harlow's question, however, was about something else: "Did you suddenly come back to the States just to see my mom?"

Coming back to visit the gravely ill Delia was indeed one of the reasons for my return.

As I finished speaking, she took a deep breath and poured herself another glass of wine.

After taking a small sip, Harlow regained her usual composure.

"Mom's condition is relatively stable now. As long as you behave, I'll take you to see her."

I looked at her in disbelief: "Are you using your mom to threaten me?"

Harlow didn't appear the least bit guilty. Instead, she let out a cold laugh: "Don't make it sound so ugly. I'm just exercising my right as her immediate family to decide who gets to visit Mom."

I stared at her silently, and she didn't avoid my gaze.

After a long silence, I conceded: "What do you want me to do?"

She responded almost instantly: "Remarry me."

I replied just as quickly: "Impossible!"
