Chapter 6

Hazel sighed, rubbing a hand over her face. "Alright, but don't say I didn't warn you."

Lily clenched her fists, steadying herself for whatever was about to come. The air in Hazel's dimly lit living room felt heavier now, thick with the weight of unspoken truths.

Hazel leaned forward, elbows resting on her knees. "Your father wasn't just gathering information—he was planning something. A full-scale exposure of the people running the corruption from the shadows. And he was close. Too close."

Lily's throat tightened. "Close to what?"

"To proving who was really pulling the strings," Hazel said. "The people behind everything. Your father had names, evidence—enough to tear apart the foundation they built."

Noah shifted beside Lily, his expression unreadable. "And that's why they killed him."

Hazel gave a slow nod. "They couldn't let him speak. So, they made sure he never would."

Lily's stomach twisted. She had spent so many years believing the official reports—that her father had been a traitor, that his death had been inevitable. But now, the truth was unraveling before her, and it was more horrifying than she could have ever imagined.

"Who are they?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Hazel exhaled. "People in power. Government officials, business tycoons, law enforcement—everywhere you look, they have someone on the inside. That's why this is so dangerous."

Lily swallowed hard. "Then why did my father think I could do something about it?"

Hazel studied her carefully. "Because he knew you wouldn't stop. That's the kind of person he raised you to be."

Lily clenched her jaw, memories of her father flooding back—the way he had always pushed her to ask questions, to never take things at face value. Had he been preparing her for this all along?

"Where do I even start?" she asked.

Hazel leaned back, considering her. "With the notebook."

Lily looked down at the worn pages in her hands, her father's handwriting filling the margins with notes, dates, and cryptic messages. It suddenly felt heavier than before.

Noah crossed his arms. "And what about you?" he asked Hazel. "What's your role in all this now?"

Hazel smirked, though there was no humor in it. "Let's just say I've been waiting a long time for someone to pick up where your father left off."

Lily met Hazel's gaze and nodded. She didn't have all the answers yet, but she had something just as powerful—a purpose.

And she wasn't going to stop until she uncovered the truth.
