Chapter 9

Elias Everett stood before Lily, his piercing gaze scrutinizing her every move. The dim light from the broken streetlamp barely illuminated his features, but she could see the sharpness in his eyes—calculated, wary.

"You want the truth?" Elias repeated, voice calm but firm. "Then you need to understand something first. Once you start down this path, there's no going back."

Lily clenched her fists. "I've already lost too much to turn back now."

Elias studied her, his expression unreadable. Then, he gave a slow nod. "Fine. But I won't hold your hand through this." He turned away, walking toward the edge of the platform, where the rusted remains of an old train car sat abandoned. "Come."

Lily exchanged a glance with Noah before following. Every step she took made her pulse quicken. The air felt heavier here, thick with something unspoken.

Elias reached into his jacket, pulling out a folded piece of paper. He handed it to Lily. "This is the last thing your father sent me before he died."

Lily's breath caught as she unfolded the paper. It was a handwritten note, the ink slightly smudged.

Elias, if anything happens to me, protect her. She's stronger than she thinks, but she'll need guidance. Trust no one. Monroe is only the beginning. — James

Lily's fingers trembled slightly as she traced the familiar handwriting. "He knew…" she whispered. "He knew they were coming for him."

Elias's jaw tightened. "Your father was smarter than they gave him credit for. But he underestimated just how deep this conspiracy runs."

Noah leaned in, reading over Lily's shoulder. "Who's 'they'? We know Monroe is involved, but what else aren't you telling us?"

Elias exhaled slowly. "Monroe is just a puppet. The real players are the ones pulling his strings. They have influence everywhere—politics, law enforcement, corporations. Your father wasn't just trying to expose Monroe. He was trying to bring down an entire system."

Lily felt her chest tighten. "And they killed him for it."

Elias nodded. "And they'll do the same to you if you get too close."

A chill ran through Lily's veins, but she refused to back down. "Then tell me what I need to do."

Elias watched her for a moment before speaking. "Monroe is the key to unraveling everything. He's careful, but not untouchable. You need to find out what he's hiding."

Lily's mind raced. "How?"

Elias's expression darkened. "By getting close to him."

Noah stiffened. "Are you serious? That's suicide."

Elias ignored him, focusing on Lily. "Monroe keeps his circle tight, but he trusts certain people. If you can get into his world, you might find something your father couldn't."

Lily swallowed hard. The idea of getting close to the man responsible for her father's death made her stomach churn. But she had no other choice.

"I'll do it," she said, her voice steady.

Noah shook his head. "Lily—"

She turned to him. "I have to."

Elias smirked slightly. "Then we start tomorrow."

Lily took a deep breath. She had stepped onto this path willingly. Now, there was no turning back.
