Chapter 12

Noah inhaled sharply beside her, his posture going rigid. "Lily, are you out of your mind?" His voice was barely above a whisper, but the urgency in it was impossible to miss.

Lily didn't take her eyes off Monroe. If she hesitated now, he'd see right through her. Every word, every movement mattered.

Monroe's smirk widened. "Smart girl." He gestured toward the sleek leather chair in front of his desk. "Sit."

Lily did as she was told, forcing herself to appear calm even as her heart pounded against her ribs. Noah remained standing, his arms crossed, glaring at Monroe with thinly veiled distrust.

Monroe walked back behind his desk and leaned against it. "You say you want to understand the bigger picture. That means understanding the game you're about to play."

Lily nodded. "Then tell me."

Monroe chuckled, shaking his head. "It doesn't work like that, sweetheart. I don't hand out information for free. You earn your place here."

Lily clenched her fists beneath the table. "And how do I do that?"

Monroe tapped his fingers against the desk, as if considering his next words. Then, he finally said, "There's a man. Victor Langley. He's an informant for one of my competitors, and he's been poking around where he shouldn't be."

Lily's stomach twisted. She didn't like where this was going.

Monroe continued, watching her closely. "I need you to find out what he knows. Gain his trust. Make him talk."

Noah scoffed. "So, what? You want her to be a spy now?"

Monroe's smirk didn't waver. "Call it what you want. But if she wants to prove herself, this is how she does it."

Lily forced herself to breathe evenly. "And if I do this?"

Monroe tilted his head. "Then we'll talk about the answers you came here for."

The weight of the decision settled over her like a storm cloud. She had come here for the truth, but she hadn't expected to have to play Monroe's game to get it.

Noah stepped closer. "Lily, don't do this."

She turned to him, her chest tightening. "I have to."

His jaw clenched. "No, you don't. This isn't the way."

Lily looked back at Monroe. If she walked away now, she'd lose everything—her only chance to uncover the truth about her father's death, to take control of the chaos that had consumed her life.

She lifted her chin. "Tell me where to find Victor Langley."

Monroe grinned, satisfied. "Now we're getting somewhere."
