Lily's breath hitched as Elias's words sank in.
"I started all of this."
Her brother—the one person she had always looked up to, the one she had trusted unconditionally—wasn't just tangled in this nightmare. He had caused it.
A sharp gust of wind whipped through the alley, but it did nothing to cool the fire building in her chest. She grabbed Elias's wrist, forcing him to face her. "What do you mean, you started this? Elias, what the hell have you done?"
His jaw tensed, his eyes flickering with something between guilt and defiance. "It's not that simple, Lily."
"Then make it simple," she demanded. "Because right now, Noah is back there fighting for his life, I'm being hunted, and you—" She swallowed, her voice unsteady. "You're standing here acting like you had no choice."
Elias exhaled sharply and ran a hand through his hair. "I didn't. You think I wanted this?" He looked away, his shoulders rigid. "I never planned for it to go this far."
Lily clenched her fists. "Then explain."
For a moment, Elias hesitated. Then, with a defeated sigh, he leaned against the cold brick wall, his voice quieter when he spoke.
"It started with Langley."
Lily's stomach twisted at the name.
"He was looking into something—something he wasn't supposed to find," Elias continued. "And I helped him. I didn't realize how deep it went until it was too late."
Lily shook her head. "Too late for what?"
Elias hesitated again. "There's an organization—one that's been pulling strings in ways you wouldn't believe. Langley and I thought we could expose them." He let out a bitter laugh. "We were idiots."
Lily's breath caught. "This organization… are they the ones after me?"
Elias nodded grimly. "They think you know something. Or that you will."
Lily's skin went cold.
Before she could ask more, heavy footsteps echoed from the alley entrance. Elias tensed, pulling her deeper into the shadows. Lily's pulse raced as a group of men, dressed in dark tactical gear, moved past them, scanning the area.
They were searching.
For her.
Elias barely breathed until they were gone. Then he turned to her, his grip on her arm tightening. "We have to keep moving."
Lily pulled back. "Not until you tell me everything."
Elias's expression darkened. "Lily, if you don't trust me, fine. But right now, if you stay here, you die. So make a choice."
Lily's heart pounded. She wanted to scream at him, to demand answers, but deep down, she knew he was right.
For now, she had to survive.
She nodded, swallowing her anger. "Fine. But when this is over, you tell me everything."
Elias didn't respond.
Instead, he grabbed her wrist and led her into the night, disappearing into the darkness.
