Chapter 26

The night pressed against them like a living thing, thick with the weight of danger. Lily followed Elias and Noah through the narrow, trash-lined alley behind the apartment complex, her heart hammering in her chest. Every step felt too loud, every breath too sharp. The people hunting them were close—too close.

Elias moved swiftly, his posture tense as he scanned their surroundings. Noah, despite his injuries, kept pace, his jaw clenched. Lily's fingers curled into fists. She wasn't just running for survival anymore—she was running for the truth.

They turned a corner, only to be met with a dead end.

"Damn it," Elias hissed under his breath.

Lily's stomach tightened. The sound of boots crunching against gravel echoed behind them.

"They're coming," Noah whispered.

Elias glanced at the fire escape above them. "Lily, climb."

She hesitated only for a second before gripping the rusted metal ladder and hauling herself up. It groaned under her weight, but she kept climbing. Elias followed, then Noah, just as dark figures appeared at the mouth of the alley.

Gunfire rang out.

A bullet ricocheted off the metal near Lily's foot, making her yelp.

"Hurry!" Elias barked.

She scrambled onto the rooftop, breathless, her pulse roaring in her ears. Elias and Noah pulled themselves up right behind her.

"They won't stop," Noah muttered, gripping his injured side. "We need to disappear."

Lily turned to Elias. "Where do we go?"

Elias hesitated only a moment. "To someone who might have answers."

Lily's brow furrowed. "Who?"

Elias met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "An old friend of Dad's."

A loud crash below made them spin. Their pursuers were climbing after them.

No time for questions.

Elias grabbed Lily's hand, pulling her toward the opposite edge of the building. "Jump."

Lily's breath caught. "You can't be serious—"

But Elias was already leaping across to the next rooftop.

Noah gave her a sharp nod. "We don't have a choice."

Swallowing her fear, Lily took a deep breath—and jumped.

For a moment, she was weightless, suspended in the night air. Then, her feet slammed onto the next rooftop, knees nearly buckling.

Noah landed beside her, groaning from the impact.

Elias didn't slow. "Come on!"

They kept running, adrenaline fueling them as they weaved across rooftops, slipping into the shadows of the city.

Lily didn't know what awaited them at the end of this chase.

But she did know one thing—

She wasn't stopping until she had answers.
