The tavern was silent except for the flickering of candlelight. Damon sat across from me, arms crossed, his sword now resting at his side instead of being discarded like a forgotten relic.
"So," he said, voice rough from years of drinking, "what's your grand plan, Your Majesty?" He spat the last words like an insult.
I leaned forward. "We start by taking back what was stolen from us."
Damon scoffed. "You got a death wish? We're outnumbered, outmatched, and unless you've been hiding an army in your pocket, I don't see how two men can take on the empire."

A slow grin spread across my face.
"Then it's a good thing we're not starting with the empire," I said. "We're starting with the Black Serpents."
Damon's smirk faded. "You're serious?"
"They're one of Caius's strongest weapons," I said. "If we cut off the head of the snake, we send a message—he's not untouchable."
Damon exhaled, rubbing his face. "I can't tell if you're insane or brilliant."
"Both."
For a moment, he just stared at me. Then he laughed. It wasn't the bitter laugh of a washed-up drunk—it was something else. Something sharper.
"Alright, kid," he said. "Let's raise some hell."
Two Days Later – Black Serpent Hideout
The moon hung high above the ruined fortress hidden deep within Blackwood Forest. Guards stood at the entrance, torches in hand, their expressions bored.
They never saw me coming.
[DING!] [Skill Activated: Stealth (F)]
I slipped past the first pair, pressing myself against the stone walls. Damon was already inside—he had taken out a patrol earlier, clearing the way for me.
We had one goal tonight—kill their leader.
I peered around the corner. Three men guarding the inner chamber. Heavily armed, but sloppy. They weren't expecting an attack.
I exhaled slowly. Time to test my new strength.
I moved.
The first guard barely had time to register my presence before my dagger sank into his throat. His body hit the floor, but the other two were already reacting.

I ducked under a swing, drove my blade into the second guard's gut, then twisted. Fast. Efficient. Deadly.
The third guard turned to run—bad idea.
Damon's sword flashed from the shadows. The man fell, his head rolling across the floor.
Damon wiped his blade. "Not bad," he muttered.
"Not done," I said.
We pushed open the doors to the leader's chamber.
Inside, sitting on a throne of stolen gold, was a man with jet-black armor and piercing yellow eyes. He smiled as if he had been expecting us.
"Leon Veltaria," he drawled. "I thought you died."
I stepped forward, my dagger glinting in the moonlight.
"You're about to wish I had."
