Elixir

I pulled a dusty wooden chest from beneath the collapsed bookshelf. The lock had already been broken—probably in Varian's hurry to escape. Damon peered over my shoulder as I pried it open.

Inside were several vials of dark liquid and a bundle of aged scrolls.

I picked up one of the vials, rolling it between my fingers. The liquid inside shimmered strangely. Not poison. Not healing. Something else.

I frowned. "Even the system can't identify it?"

Damon grabbed a scroll and unrolled it. His eyes scanned the contents before he let out a low whistle. "These aren't just instructions—these are techniques."

I snatched one and skimmed through it. The faded ink described a stealth movement technique, another detailed a reinforcement method for the body, and one even mentioned enhancing reflex speed.

These were valuable.

Varian hadn't had time to take them. Maybe he hadn't even finished studying them himself. This was a win.

I quickly stashed the vials and scrolls into my inventory. "We'll figure out what these do later. For now, we need to track him."

Damon cracked his knuckles. "About time. Let's hunt that bastard down."

The trail was faint, but not impossible to follow. Varian's shadow magic left traces—disturbances in the air, unnatural shifts in the light.

We followed the path deeper into the Blackwood Forest. The dense canopy blocked the moonlight, and the further we walked, the more I felt something was wrong.

Then, the system chimed.

Damon cursed. "Tell me that's a joke."

Branches snapped in the distance. Low growls echoed through the trees.

Then, they emerged.

Their bodies were twisted, their fur matted with black veins of corruption. Their eyes glowed with a sickly yellow light. Mutant Beasts.

And there were at least ten of them.

I exhaled slowly, gripping my dagger. "Looks like Varian isn't the only thing we have to kill tonight."

Damon grinned, raising his sword. "Finally, some fun."

The beasts charged.
