Varian

We moved quickly, following the trail left by the fleeing Dreadwolf. Despite the wounds we had taken, neither of us slowed down.

The deeper we went, the more unnatural the forest became. The air felt thicker, almost suffocating. The trees weren't just twisted—they looked corrupted, their bark pulsing with dark veins, almost as if something had poisoned them.

Damon muttered, "I don't like this."

"Neither do I," I admitted.

But we didn't stop.

We finally reached a clearing. At its center stood an abandoned fortress, its stone walls cracked and covered in creeping vines. The wolf's tracks led straight inside.

We had found Varian's hideout.

Damon exhaled, gripping his sword. "So, what's the plan? Kick down the door and kill the bastard?"

"Too risky," I said, scanning the area. "We don't know how many men he has left. If he's desperate, he might have set more traps."

I activated [Observe].

[DING!]

▶ [Varian's Base – Alert Level: High]

▶ Enemies Detected: 4 (Confirmed), ??? (Unknown)]

▶ Status: Defensive Positioning Active

Four confirmed enemies. But that question mark meant there were more we couldn't see.

Damon frowned. "So? What do we do?"

I spotted a broken section of the wall. It wasn't much, but if we were careful, we could slip in without alerting the whole base.

I pointed. "There. We go in quietly. If we can take out a few guards first, we'll have the advantage."

Damon sighed. "Fine. But the moment we see Varian, I'm not holding back."

I didn't argue. Neither was I.

We slipped through the gap in the wall. The inside was just as ruined as the outside—broken furniture, shattered stone, dust covering everything. But there were signs of recent activity.

A fire still smoldered in the main hall. Supplies were stacked in the corners. Someone had been living here.

Then I saw the potions.

On a nearby table, several vials of glowing liquid sat next to aged scrolls. Some of the potions had labels, others didn't. But even without the system, I could tell these weren't ordinary.

Damon raised an eyebrow. "Useful?"

I quickly scanned them.

▶ [Lesser Healing Potion – Restores 20% HP]

▶ [Mana Recovery Potion – Restores 30% MP]

▶ [??? – Unidentified Scroll]

I pocketed two of the potions and the scrolls. I didn't know what they did yet, but we'd figure it out later.

Then, voices echoed from deeper inside the base.

I gestured for Damon to move. The fight was about to begin.
