Oreburgh's Challenge

Chapter 3: Oreburgh's Challenge!

After parting ways with Ryo, Kairo set his sights on Oreburgh City, home of Sinnoh's first Gym.

The journey wasn't easy. Along the way, he and Chimchar battled wild Pokémon, improving their coordination and strength. By the time they reached Oreburgh, Chimchar was stronger and faster than ever.

But when Kairo stepped into the Oreburgh Gym, he was met with an unexpected challenge.

"Sorry, kid," the Gym assistant at the front desk said, adjusting his glasses. "Leader Roark isn't here right now."

Kairo frowned. "Where is he?"

The assistant pointed toward the Oreburgh Mine. "He's down there, training. If you want to battle him, you'll have to find him first."

Oreburgh Mine – A Test of Strength

Kairo entered the massive underground mine, the air thick with dust and the sound of pickaxes echoing through the cavern. It didn't take long to spot Roark—a young man wearing a mining helmet, standing beside his Cranidos.

He was overseeing some miners when he noticed Kairo approaching.

"Hey, you must be a challenger," Roark said, smiling. "If you want a Gym battle, I hope you're ready to work for it."

Kairo nodded. "I came here to win my first badge."

Roark chuckled. "Good attitude. But before we battle, let's see how you handle a real rock-hard challenge."

He gestured to a group of wild Geodude blocking the path ahead.

"Before I accept your challenge, I want to see if you can handle these guys. If you can beat them, I'll know you're ready for my Gym."

Kairo's eyes narrowed. "Alright, you're on!"

Wild Battle: Kairo vs. Geodude Horde!

Kairo sent out Chimchar, who cracked his knuckles, ready for action.

"Chimchar, use Ember!"

Flames burst from Chimchar's mouth, striking the Geodude. The attack landed, but since Geodude were Rock-types, they barely flinched.

Roark crossed his arms. "Fire moves won't work well against Rock-types. You'll have to find another way."

Kairo clenched his fists. "I know that. But I have a plan."

The Geodude launched a Rock Throw attack, sending stones flying at Chimchar.

"Dodge and counter with Scratch!" Kairo commanded.

Chimchar leaped over the rocks and slashed the closest Geodude, chipping away at its tough defenses.

But there were too many of them.

One of the Geodude tackled Chimchar from the side, knocking him back.

Kairo gritted his teeth. Chimchar was outnumbered.

Then—something happened.

Chimchar's body glowed white as his form began to change.

---

Chimchar Evolves into Monferno!

Kairo's eyes widened as Chimchar grew taller, his tail flame expanding. When the glow faded, Monferno stood in Chimchar's place.

Roark raised an eyebrow. "Well, that's interesting."

Kairo pulled out his Pokédex:

Monferno – The Playful Pokémon

"It skillfully controls its flames to move faster and attack stronger. Its tail burns hotter when in battle."

Kairo grinned. "Alright, Monferno, let's test your new power!"

Roark smirked. "Now that's what I like to see. But can you finish the fight?"

Kairo pointed at the Geodude. "Monferno, use Mach Punch!"

With blinding speed, Monferno shot forward and punched the nearest Geodude before it could react. The super-effective move sent it flying into the mine wall, knocking it out instantly.

Roark whistled. "Not bad. Looks like you're ready for our battle after all."

---

Oreburgh Gym Battle – Kairo vs. Roark!

Back at the Gym, the battlefield was set.

"Since this is your first badge challenge," Roark said, adjusting his helmet, "we'll do a two-on-two battle. If you can take down both my Pokémon, you win the Coal Badge."

Kairo nodded. "Let's do this."

The battlefield shook as Roark sent out Geodude!

Kairo smirked. "Monferno, you're up!"
