Wang Gang and the others kept posting selfies in the group chat, showing off their spoils.
This attracted a swarm of fawning girls, all hoping to get some food or other benefits.
The attention made them feel like victorious generals returning from a triumphant battle.
Gao Weiwei was among those begging for supplies. Surprisingly, she was still alive.
She shamelessly flattered Wang Lei in the group chat:
"Brother Lei, you were so cool just now! I saw you kick a zombie flying with one foot!"
"Piece of cake! Those zombies are just small fry. Want to come over to my place? I can teach you a few moves."
Huang Ming stared at his phone, his expression darkening. His gaze was as sharp and cold as a blade.
Gao Weiwei didn't reply further, but Huang Ming guessed she was already privately messaging Wang Lei, probably arranging to visit him tonight.
This was the first time Liu Shuang'er had seen Huang Ming with such an icy expression, devoid of any emotion.
It sent a shiver down her spine. She glanced at the group chat, her eyes narrowing thoughtfully.
"Huang Ming! Does that girl have something to do with you?"
"Yeah, my ex."
Shuang'er couldn't resist clicking on Gao Weiwei's profile, scrutinizing it for a moment before teasing,
"Wow, your taste back then was really something. Girls like her are a dime a dozen in my class."
"Yeah, my standards were terrible back then. Whatever, it's in the past. To me, she's already dead. Why bother with a corpse?"
He paused, then added:
"I don't know why I'm so angry. But it's good she's still alive. I hope she lives long enough to see how carefree and happy I am."
"Damn, you're so mean. At least have some decency!"
Huang Ming pinched her soft cheek but didn't respond, instead focusing on the group chat to see what they planned to do next.
In the group chat, Wang Gang and the other 19 survivors proposed making more trips to the cafeteria, urging the rest to join them.
With one successful raid under their belts, the others eagerly jumped on board, all wanting a piece of the action. They were afraid that if they went late, the good stuff would be gone.
Out of the 47 male residents in the building, everyone except Huang Ming joined in—46 people in total.
Wang Gang counted the participants in the group chat and noticed one person missing. He couldn't figure out who it was at first.
"Wait, we're missing one person. Who didn't join? Who's this tough guy?"
"I know who it is. It's Huang Ming from Room 1501."
The speaker was Wang Lei. Huang Ming didn't need to guess—it was definitely Gao Weiwei who'd noticed his silence and privately informed Wang Lei.
Her sycophantic behavior made Huang Ming see her in a whole new light.
"No way, that coward! How can he be so scared? We're all risking our lives, and he's hiding like a little girl!"
"Alright, everyone, stop talking about him. Yelling at him won't make him join. Those who contribute get a share. If he didn't go, he gets nothing."
The group chat was filled with voices condemning Huang Ming—some cursing, some reasoning, and some taking the moral high ground.
The funniest part was someone talking about benefits, saying those who went would get rewards, while those who didn't would get nothing.
"Huang Ming! Aren't you going to respond to them?"
"No need. They're just clowns. To me, they're already dead. Why bother with corpses?"
Shuang'er rolled her eyes so hard they almost got stuck. She snapped:
"If they heard you say that, they'd probably set your door on fire!"
"Shuang'er, that actually reminds me. What I'm most afraid of is someone in this building making gunpowder. If that happens, they could easily blow open our door. That's why I'm keeping a low profile—better to avoid trouble. Once they run out of food, I'll make my move."
"Gunpowder? Bombs? That's just sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal. If someone in this building is a chemistry major, it's totally possible."
Huang Ming looked at Shuang'er in surprise. Even she knew the basics. It seemed he couldn't afford to be careless. For now, he'd let them have their fun.
If he drew too much attention, it would only invite trouble. His apartment wasn't a fortress. Even low-grade firearms could breach it.
Though Huang Ming was confident he could defend his place with his pistol, he didn't want to waste his precious 50 bullets.
Plus, firing a gun would make too much noise, attracting zombies and alerting nearby buildings.
Until he found someone who could manufacture bullets for him, he couldn't act recklessly.
And that person was most likely Gu Anqing. But she was too far away. Huang Ming felt powerless.
Seeing Huang Ming remain silent, Shuang'er's eyelashes fluttered slightly. She couldn't help but remind him:
"Huang Ming! You're doing the right thing. We really can't reveal too much right now. Otherwise, these people will swarm us, and who knows what underhanded tactics they'll use. Everyone in this university is sharp."
Hearing this, Huang Ming felt a warmth in his heart. Though they'd only been together for less than two days, Shuang'er was already starting to think for him.
"Yeah, I know. If we can rescue your best friend, things will get a lot easier."
Shuang'er looked at him with confusion, her beautiful eyes blinking rapidly, as if to say: *Are you scheming something with my best friend?*
Huang Ming shrugged, indicating it wasn't what she thought, then explained:
"I have a gun, but not many bullets. Think about it—if your best friend comes, I have the materials and equipment. It shouldn't be hard for her to make bullets for me. With plenty of bullets, do you think we'd still be afraid of the zombies downstairs or our neighbors?"
Shuang'er's eyes lit up. She hadn't expected Huang Ming to have a gun.
In the apocalypse, having one would significantly boost their safety.
"So that's the plan. But the problem is, Building 5 is the farthest from our Building 10. What can we do?"
As she spoke, her eyes dimmed, as if the task was impossible.
Huang Ming thought for a moment, then analyzed:
"Actually, all the difficulties and anxieties come from the unknown. First, we don't know how many zombies are on the way."
"Second, we can't be sure if Gu Anqing is willing to join me like you did."
"Finally, even if she agrees, suddenly risking my life to rescue a girl would draw too much attention from our building and the surrounding ones. That would be troublesome. Unless we act at night!"
