Mealtime was always the happiest time for them. With billions worth of supplies in Huang Ming's dimensional space, they could enjoy different delicacies every day without repetition. This kept the two campus beauties in excellent moods.
Liu Shuang'er and Gu Anqing had repeatedly expressed amazement during meals, saying even before the apocalypse they never ate this well. Normally they'd just have cafeteria food or occasionally dine out with friends - nothing compared to their current feasts that felt like a dream.
"Enough marveling," Huang Ming said. "I told you we'll eat like this every day. If you want cafeteria-style fast food, we can do that too - have school cafeteria flavors every day!"
The two girls simultaneously rolled their eyes at him, which he understood perfectly - their silent protest.
As usual, Huang Ming finished eating first. Ignoring them, he went to the window to practice his spatial ability.
If he could open dimensional portals, could he position one in front of himself to trap charging zombies inside? And if he released them later, would they be dead?
More pressingly, he wondered - if survivors shot at him, could his spatial portal absorb the bullets? Would the bullets pass through or get trapped inside? Would they continue toward him or remain in the dimensional space?
These questions filled his mind. He needed experiments - like having Shuang'er throw things at him or Anqing fire some test shots around him.
Turning around, he saw they'd finished eating and were clearing the table.
"Shuang'er, come here!"
"What is it, Huang Ming?"
"Step back and throw these marbles at me hard! I want to test my spatial portal."
Shuang'er's eyes lit up with understanding. Taking the marbles, she retreated to the dining table and began pelting him relentlessly.
As the marbles flew toward him, Huang Ming visualized a spatial portal appearing before him. Like special effects in a movie, the marbles vanished into thin air.
Shuang'er gasped, then excitedly ran over. "Well? What did you learn?"
Instead of answering, Huang Ming called to Gu Anqing. "Anqing, come here!"
"Yes? What is it?"
"Fire several shots around me." He took out a pistol from his dimensional space and handed it to her.
Understanding immediately, Gu Anqing retreated to the heavy metal door. Holding the pistol with perfect form - steady and calm without any nervousness - she took aim. Having done live-fire practice before and only shooting near his body, she remained completely composed.
This was exactly why Huang Ming asked her - if it were Shuang'er, she'd probably tremble holding the gun and worry too much.
Meanwhile, Shuang'er had already scurried to safety, watching nervously with her toes curling anxiously.
"Ready? I'm firing!" Gu Anqing warned.
Huang Ming positioned his spatial portal and gave a thumbs up. Three shots rang out.
To Huang Ming's naked eye, the bullets' trajectories were invisible. But after the shots, nothing around him seemed affected - the bullets must have been absorbed into the dimensional space.
Gu Anqing returned the pistol and analyzed: "Success. If it failed, the bullets would have hit the floor - which shows no damage."
"Seems my ability is pretty strong indeed."
"Definitely!" Gu Anqing continued analyzing. "Against survivors, this gives you solid defense. If you can't win, you can escape unharmed. The only question is what level of firepower it can withstand."
Just then, Shuang'er piped up: "Can you shoot the bullets back out?"
Though it sounded far-fetched, Huang Ming decided to try. Concentrating, his eyes flashed white as three bullets suddenly shot out from the spatial portal toward the metal door.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three sparks flew as bullets struck the door, leaving clear impact marks before the spent rounds clattered to the floor.
Huang Ming stood frozen in shock.
"Shuang'er, you jinx! It actually works!" In his excitement, the words tumbled out thoughtlessly.
"Ugh! If you can't compliment properly, just shut up!" Shuang'er huffed, pointing angrily at him but not daring to actually hit him - her pouting face utterly adorable.
Gu Anqing was equally stunned, staring wide-eyed at the bullet marks. "This defies physics! According to energy conservation, you can return any firepower received back at the attacker!"
"Well, that's good. Means we'll survive even safer in this apocalypse," Huang Ming said.
Shuang'er and Gu Anqing exchanged smiles, silently acknowledging this man was their future protector. The stronger he became, the safer they'd be.
"Shuang'er, assist me this afternoon," Gu Anqing said. "The combat suit needs some tailoring work. Let's finish it by today."
"Sure thing!"
Arm in arm, the two walked past Huang Ming and began working amidst the equipment. Watching them, warmth filled his heart.
Not idle himself, Huang Ming opened the window, raised his pistol, and with a flash in his eyes -
PFFT! PFFT! PFFT!
Three distant zombies dropped with headshots. The silencer kept the noise barely audible.
Since the girls were confident of finishing by afternoon, Huang Ming decided to clear all visible zombies to pave way for tonight's rescue mission.
Twenty-seven shots later, no more zombies remained in sight.
His precision shooting had reached new mastery - as effortless as touch-typing compared to his former hunt-and-peck method.
