Chapter 20 – The Moment She Knew

Sophia's world had already shifted beyond recognition, but nothing compared to this moment. The air between her and Lucian crackled with something electric, something undeniable. Every fiber of her being told her to run, yet something deeper—something primal—held her in place.

Lucian stood close, too close, his tall frame shadowing hers. His dark, penetrating gaze searched her face as if he could see the war raging inside her. His hand lifted, fingertips brushing against her cheek with an intimacy that sent a shiver racing down her spine.

"You're scared," he murmured.

She swallowed, forcing herself to meet his eyes. "Of course, I am."

"Of me?"

She hesitated, but the answer came before she could stop it. "No. Of myself."

His brow furrowed slightly, but she saw the understanding flicker in his gaze. "Because you feel it."

Sophia exhaled shakily. "I don't even know what 'it' is."

Lucian's lips curved into something dangerous, something knowing. "It's the bond, Sophia. The connection that pulls us together. You've felt it all your life, even before you knew I existed."

She did.

Even as a child, she had always felt something—an unexplainable ache, a yearning for something or someone just out of reach. And then, there were the dreams. The shadowed figure watching over her, protecting her, calling to her in ways she didn't understand.

Lucian had always been there.

That realization knocked the breath from her lungs. "Why me?" she whispered.

Lucian's expression darkened, his voice turning rough with emotion. "Because you are mine."

His words ignited something inside her. Something wild. Something dangerous.

Her pulse hammered as Lucian lifted a hand to tuck a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear. The gesture was tender, but the heat in his gaze was anything but.

"You think you have a choice, Sophia," he murmured, his thumb tracing the curve of her lower lip. "But tell me… when I touch you like this, when I look at you like this, do you really want to run?"

Sophia's breath hitched. She should say yes. She should push him away. She should fight the pull between them.

But she couldn't.

Because no matter how much she denied it, no matter how much she tried to rationalize what was happening, the truth was undeniable.

She was his.

And for the first time, she wasn't sure she wanted to fight it anymore.
