Chapter 25 - The Unbreakable Bond

The night air was thick with tension as Lucian led Sophia through the dense underbrush of the witches' woods. The towering trees whispered secrets in the wind, their twisted branches forming an ominous canopy above them. Sophia's heart pounded, her newfound senses making everything sharper—every rustle, every flicker of movement in the darkness sent shivers down her spine.

Lucian had been silent since they had set off, his grip firm around her wrist. His jaw was clenched, his eyes scanning the surroundings with calculated precision. She had seen him fight before, but this was different. There was something about the way his body moved, controlled and yet ready to strike at any moment.

"Where are we going?" she finally asked, breaking the silence.

"A place they won't find us," Lucian replied without looking at her.

They had barely escaped the fae warriors sent by Sean. Even now, the distant howls of their pursuers echoed in the trees. Sophia's instincts screamed at her to run, but Lucian's presence was the only thing keeping her grounded.

Suddenly, he stopped.

"Hold on to me," he ordered.

Before she could question him, he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her against his chest. Heat radiated from his body, sending an unfamiliar shudder through her. Then, in a blur, he leaped into the trees, landing on a high branch with effortless grace.

Sophia gasped. "How—?"

"I'm not just a vampire," he reminded her, his voice laced with amusement.

She barely had time to process before he jumped again, moving with supernatural speed from branch to branch. Her grip tightened on his shoulders, her breath catching at how strong he was. The thrill of the movement, the closeness between them, made her pulse race.

When they finally landed in a small clearing, he let her go. The moment she stepped back, she felt cold, as if something vital had been taken away. She didn't dare acknowledge what that meant.

Lucian turned to her, his expression unreadable. "You need to be careful," he said, his voice softer now. "Sean isn't just after you for the throne—he wants you bound to him."

Sophia's stomach twisted. "Bound?"

"Marriage in the fae world isn't just a ceremony. It's magic—an unbreakable bond. If he binds you to him, he'll have complete control over your power."

Her mind reeled. She had known Sean wanted the throne, but this? The thought of being trapped with him, powerless against his will, made her blood turn cold.

Lucian stepped closer, his intense gaze locking onto hers. "I won't let that happen."

The conviction in his voice made her breath hitch. There was no doubt, no hesitation—only absolute determination.

She swallowed hard. "Why do you care so much?"

Lucian stiffened. For a moment, she thought he wouldn't answer. But then, he lifted a hand and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

"Because you're mine, Sophia," he murmured.

Her heart slammed against her ribs. She should have been furious at his possessiveness, but instead, heat curled in her belly, spreading through her like wildfire.

He leaned closer, his breath ghosting over her lips. "And I don't share."
