Silver Heart (Present Day)
I didn’t get to finish my sentence as a candy cane end was forcefully shoved into my mouth. The crisp, refreshing taste of peppermint flooded my taste buds and eased my knotted stomach. As the pangs of pain-induced nausea receded, I began to enjoy the sweet treat.
“Mm,” I pulled it out, smiling. “This is the most delicious thing I've ever had.”
“Just be careful how long you suck on it. Candy canes can get dangerous pointed ends. Almost like a holiday shank,” Dawn playfully warned, trying not to smile.
“It's food and a weapon? I love candy canes!” I joked back, trying to get a smile from her. She started laughing, and I felt comfort from that sound. It reminded me of the old days with my sister-from-another-mister.
