Charlotte said nothing, and Gloria continued, “I hope he's still there, enjoying your delicious croissants.”
— “Yes,” Charlotte replied with a slight laugh, “but he'll be leaving soon. By the way, will you be with your driver today? I have something to do at home before heading to the restaurant, so Jacob won’t be able to drop me off. It would help if you could pick me up, and we’ll go together.”
— “And should I also call you first before you tell me this?” Gloria said with a hint of reproach. “And don’t forget that you didn’t even bother to check if I got home safely last night.”
Charlotte paused, slightly unsettled.
— “Sorry, Gloria. I was about to call you when I saw your call this morning. As for last night, I went to bed early. And since Jacob told me he dropped you off in front of your place, I figured it was unnecessary to call again to check.”
Gloria couldn’t help but let out a bitter chuckle.
— “I see you really trust your man.”
