Jenna, a new intern at the nursery, yawned widely. She hadn't gotten any sleep, the crushing weight of heartbreak pressing down on her chest. Her long-term boyfriend had just broken up with her. Because of this, she unconsciously switched the identification tags of two babies, Baby Rhaella and Baby Cierra.
When Rhona, a nurse, passed by the nursery, she noticed that the cribs of Baby Cierra and Baby Cienna were not next to each other. Assuming a mistake had been made, she switched the cribs of Baby Cierra and Baby Rhaella. However, she didn't know that the identification tags had already been switched by the new intern.
Night fell. Hannah, a new mother, was recovering in her room. She felt groggy from the lingering effects of anesthesia. She was alone; her husband had left for their first child's daycare orientation.
Her husband was a notorious mafia boss, but they had decided to live in this country for a while, wanting their children to experience a peaceful life—at least for a time. As Hannah gazed at her baby, Rhaella, an uneasy feeling settled in her chest. Something about the baby's neck seemed off. For some reason, she felt this was not her child.
But in her groggy state, she dismissed the thought as a hallucination. Shaking off the unease, she picked up the baby.
Suddenly, a woman dressed in hospital scrubs entered the room.
"Hi, I'm Nurse Jeinah. I need to take your baby for a routine examination."
Hannah looked at her and nodded. "Sure, that sounds fine. How long will it take?"
The nurse smirked. "Just a few minutes. I'll bring her right back."
Nurse Jeinah took the baby, her eyes gleaming with mischief as she exited the room, leaving a fake ID in Hannah's hand.
Meanwhile, in another room, Ravihcia, who had also just given birth to twins, felt a hot surge of blood rush to her head. Her vision blurred with fury, and her fists clenched tightly.
"I told you! THIS IS NOT MY CIERRA! Can't you see? You stupid people! Cierra was the first one I carried inside the delivery room! I know her face! She has a birthmark on the left side of her neck!"
"But you nurses keep telling me I'm just hallucinating? FOR REAL!? I don't hate this baby, BUT THIS IS NOT MY BABY!" Ravihcia shouted, hurling a glass of water at the door. The loud crack of shattering glass echoed through the room as the door swung open, revealing a new face.
"RAVI! Stop causing trouble for the nurses. You're the senator's daughter—act like one. Don't give Father-in-law a reason to be upset."
A man in a tuxedo stood at the doorway, his expression stern.
Ravihcia let out a heavy sigh, shaking her head as she avoided eye contact with her husband. "John, remove your shoes and step inside."
John frowned but was about to comply when he noticed the broken glass on the floor.
"HEY! THIS BITCH—are you trying to make my feet bleed or what?! You should be thankful for your dad! If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have married you!"
Ravihcia smirked. "Then you should—"
Her words were cut off.
"Excuse me, I'm sorry to disturb you, but did I hear you right?" a woman interrupted. "You said your daughter has a birthmark on the left side of her neck?"
Ravihcia turned to look at the newcomer.
"I'm sorry, I'm Hannah Vorge—that's my English name. The baby given to me has a birthmark on her neck. A nurse told me they needed to check her, but it's been longer than a few minutes. When I asked, the nurses told me they don't have anyone named Jeinah working here—the one who took the baby."
Ravihcia's eyes widened in shock. "WHAT?!"
"Brother, it's him," another voice chimed in. A man stepped forward and pointed at John. "He's the one who let the nurse leave. When I asked her to open the bag, he told me not to cause trouble for the nurses who were working hard."
Everyone's attention snapped to John. The one who had spoken was Karriell, the secretary of Jason—the infamous mafia boss from another country.
John's gaze flickered to Jason, and he instinctively swallowed hard. Of course, he would be nervous—John was the son of the head of an organization that despised mafias like Jason's.
Jason smirked, eyes locking onto John. "I didn't expect you to be here, John."
John pinched his arm with his strong hand, forcing a laugh. "S...so am I? I thought you were busy. It's great to see you again."
Ravihcia didn't need an explanation—she had already pieced the situation together. Her gaze snapped to John, her voice icy.
"If anything happens to my daughter... if my instincts are right..." she took a deep breath, her voice trembling with barely contained rage. "I swear, John, I will never forgive you."
She grabbed her phone and called her dad, starting with a sob as she blamed everything on John. Her dad reassured her, saying he would do everything to find her grandchild. A moment later, investigators and police arrived at the hospital.
"Thanks... Thank you so much, Dad! I love you," she said, wiping her tears.
Hours passed, and despite the joint efforts of investigators and police, the only information they had about Cierra, the newborn baby, was the CCTV footage of a fake nurse entering a room and leaving with a large bag.
"That was when I questioned the nurse. I asked her if she could open her bag because I saw her enter the room with a baby, but when she left… she was only carrying a bag big enough to fit a baby."
Everyone's attention shifted to Kerrie, whose explanation helped them understand what had happened.
"But someone stopped me," he continued. "Mr. John told me not to disturb the nurse because she was tired from work. He even pushed me, and in that moment, the woman dressed as a nurse escaped from my sight."
As the investigation continued, they discovered that the new intern had made a mistake.
"I didn't know… I'm sorry. I'm so unprofessional. I shouldn't have let my personal life affect my work," Jenna said, staring blankly at the ground as she gripped her arms.
But John, Ravihcia's husband, cornered the new intern. It seemed like they had a past.
"So it was you! You switched the ID tags because you didn't want us to be happy! I know you still love me, but you should move on," he accused, dramatically dropping to his knees as he forced himself to cry.
Jenna's eyes widened in shock. She fell to her knees and looked at Ravihcia.
"Ma'am, I swear on my father… I didn't know about the two of you. I have siblings to take care of—how could I do something like that to a baby? Please, don't put me in jail. I don't know anything!"
John stood up, wiping his fake tears.
"Lies! I told you I love my wife, and that's why we broke up! Because of you… my daughter shouldn't have been the one to get kidnapped!"
Jenna was stunned. Her hands shook as she grabbed her phone and handed it to Ravihcia. Walking forward, her breath hitched.
"H-here… you can look through it. All our conversations, pictures, and everything is in there… I swear, I really didn't know."
Ravihcia noticed Jenna was already suffering from an anxiety attack. She pulled her into a comforting hug and guided her to sit on the sofa, letting her rest against her.
"What you're saying doesn't add up. Did you forget that someone else also switched the cribs? What would be your excuse this time, John? That she did it because you ignored her feelings, so she decided to team up with Intern Jenna?" Ravi challenged.
John clenched his fists, his frustration growing. His plan had been ruined by one small mistake. Gritting his teeth, he refused to go down alone.
"That's right! They probably worked together with the kidnapper—"
His words were abruptly cut off by Rhona, the nurse who had switched the cribs.
"I'm sorry to say this, but I'm not into guys. Also, I'm already married. So there's no reason for me to have any connection with the intern," she stated firmly. "While I admit my mistake of not double-checking the details and switching the cribs without proper verification, I won't let you ruin my reputation any further. Stop your lies, or I'll let my wife's uncle deal with you."
Ravihcia smirked, slamming her hand on the table. Her thoughts swirled in dizzying chaos as she shot a cold glare at John.
"Bro! WHAT A KARMA. But WHY DOES MY DAUGHTER HAVE TO SHARE YOUR KARMA!?"
After further discussions with the police and investigators, Jason, the mafia boss, expressed his apologies to Ravihcia.
"I'm not happy about what happened, but in a way, it's a miracle in disguise," he admitted. "Since I'm from another country, and my side of the family isn't close to me, if something like this had happened to my daughter, they would have abandoned her. Because money can't buy everything."
Following this, the hospital president released an official statement.
While Jenna's actions were unintentional, Rhona's decision to switch the cribs without double-checking the tags was a critical oversight. Both were responsible for the mistake, but Rhona's actions had a more direct impact on the outcome.
In the kidnapping case, the primary fault lay with the imposter, Nurse Jeinah, who posed as a nurse and carried out the abduction. However, the hospital's administration and security were also at fault for failing to properly verify Jeinah's identity and credentials.
They also acknowledged that Jenna and Rhona's earlier mistake played a role in the events leading up to the kidnapping. However, the imposter's actions and the hospital's security failures were the biggest contributing factors. The hospital promised to do its best to resolve the situation and restore its reputation.
Meanwhile, in an unknown mansion. A woman carrying a toddler burst into laughter.
"So that bitch kidnapped the wrong baby? I knew it! Sooner or later, she was bound to make a huge mistake."
"Mrs. Gravi, please lower your voice. I just got the baby to sleep—don't make noise," an older man warned.
Mrs. Gravi pouted at the old man standing at the foot of the stairs.
"Old Fen, I know you're enjoying this. So? How's your granddaughter?" she asked, her smile betraying her satisfaction. "She was crying non-stop after that woman brought the baby here, but as soon as you held her, she stopped."
"Shut up. Don't say that out loud," Old Fen snapped. His gaze darkened as he stared up the stairs. "Only the head of the organization knows. We can't trust his son. If John finds out who I really am… he'll use me to gain favor with my twin brother and my daughter."
A knowing smirk tugged at Old Fen's lips.
"A snake will even bite its own father for a small treat from its mother," he muttered. Then, glancing out the window, he added in a low voice, "Be careful. The sky is starting to shimmer… I hope this isn't a bad omen."
