Chapter 5:A Shadow's Resolve
Azrael gasped for air, his chest heaving as he pressed his back against the damp cavern wall. The blood trickling down his arm burned like fire, but he ignored it. He had no choice. He could hear the creature's distorted breathing from just around the corner—a low, guttural sound, like air forced through shredded lungs.
He clenched his fists, his nails digging into his palm. He had come too far to die now.
Ding!
[Survival Task: Eliminate the Lesser Wraith before it notices your presence.]
[Failure Penalty: Immediate System Sanction.]
A cold shiver ran down Azrael's spine. The system never specified its penalties, but he already knew—hesitation meant death.
He gritted his teeth. "Damn it…"
With careful steps, he moved forward, pressing his body low against the uneven stone floor. The cavern reeked of decay, the very air thick with the scent of rotting flesh. He peeked around the corner.
The creature stood in the middle of the chamber, its twisted form flickering like a candle in the wind. It had no eyes—just an empty, gaping void where a face should be. Shadows coiled around its limbs like smoke, shifting constantly, as though reality itself struggled to define its existence.
Azrael's heartbeat pounded in his ears. He had no weapon, no armor—just his wits and the ever-looming system hovering over his soul.
Think, Azrael. Think.
Then, an idea struck him.
He picked up a loose rock and hurled it toward the opposite side of the cavern. It clattered loudly against the wall, and the wraith twitched, its body turning sharply toward the noise.
That was his chance.
Azrael sprinted.
The moment his foot left the ground, the wraith reacted, twisting its body unnaturally as it lunged at him. But he had anticipated this. He dropped to the floor, sliding beneath the creature's sweeping claws, feeling the cold wind of its attack just inches above his head.
The cavern was small, but the walls were jagged. If he played it right—
He kicked off the floor and leaped toward the nearest rock formation, using his momentum to scale it in seconds. The wraith, confused, let out a shrill screech and slashed at the air.
Azrael didn't hesitate.
He launched himself from the height, twisting his body midair as he drove his elbow down on the wraith's head with every ounce of strength he had.
A sickening crunch echoed through the cavern.
The wraith let out a distorted wail as its body convulsed. The shadows around it flickered violently before imploding in on themselves.
Then—
Ding!
[Lesser Wraith Eliminated.]
[+20 XP]
[You have leveled up!]
Azrael collapsed onto his knees, gasping for breath as the system's notification flickered before his eyes.
He did it.
For the first time since being thrown into this nightmare, a small smirk crept onto his lips.
But his relief was short-lived.
Because just as he caught his breath, the cavern walls trembled.
And from the darkness beyond… something else stirred.
