Chapter 10: Shattered Illusions
Azrael had known pain. The kind that sank into his bones, whispered in his ear, and reminded him that survival was never guaranteed. But this… this was something different.
He barely had time to react as his body was flung backward, crashing into the cold stone ground. His vision blurred, his ribs aching from the impact. The world around him was shifting—twisting in ways that made no sense.
The whispers had returned.
"You are not ready."
"You do not belong here."
He clenched his fists, pushing himself up despite the searing pain in his chest. His breathing was ragged, but his mind was sharper than ever. He wasn't going to die here. Not like this.
The nightmarish creatures that surrounded him stood at the edges of the dimly lit chamber. Their bodies were shifting shadows, their hollow eyes locked onto him with eerie anticipation. They weren't attacking. Not yet.
Azrael wiped the blood from his lips, forcing a grin. "You're hesitating. Why?"
No response. Just silence.
Then, the system's voice echoed in his mind.
[Survival Task Activated: Prove Your Worth]
[Failure to complete the task will result in termination.]
Azrael's heart pounded. "Of course, you'd throw that at me now."
He didn't have time to hesitate. He had to move.
With a deep breath, he launched forward, his instincts screaming at him to react. The first shadow lunged, claws stretching out like jagged knives. He twisted, barely dodging, before slamming his elbow into its featureless face.
It dissipated like smoke.
But more were coming.
Azrael knew he couldn't fight them all—at least not head-on. He had to be smarter. Faster.
His mind raced as he scanned the chamber, searching for an opening. That's when he saw it—an old, half-crumbled archway at the far end of the room.
He sprinted.
The creatures reacted instantly, howling as they gave chase. The ground beneath him trembled, shadows rising like tendrils, trying to ensnare him. He leapt over one, slid under another, his breath sharp and focused.
One mistake. That was all it would take for him to be swallowed whole.
But Azrael didn't make mistakes. Not anymore.
Reaching the archway, he threw himself through it, rolling into darkness. The creatures screeched, unable to follow. A barrier. A protection he hadn't noticed before.
He collapsed onto his back, gasping.
The system's voice chimed again.
[Task Completed.]
[Reward: ???]
His heart was still hammering, his body trembling with adrenaline. But he had survived.
For now.
