William raised an eyebrow, a hint of curiosity showing on his face. He continued, "I mean the Vanderwoodson family."
Leonardo's eyesight turned slightly cold, and a barely noticeable sharpness flashed in his eyes. However, his tone remained as calm as still water. "They'll know soon enough." As he spoke, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly, revealing a confident smile.
William stared at him for a few seconds, then suddenly threw his head back and laughed heartily. His laughter was hearty and resounding. "Good! This is the way a Black should be!" As he spoke, he raised his wine glass high and shouted, "Come on, let's celebrate that the iceberg in our family is finally about to thaw!"
The hubbub in the living room instantly grew louder. Leonardo helplessly took the wine glass. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his grandmother excitedly directing the servants to carry out box after box of antique jewels, still muttering, "The betrothal gifts can't be shabby."
He slightly lowered his head and took a sip of the wine. The cold liquid slowly slid down his throat. Strangely, it couldn't suppress that strange yet warm feeling in his heart. His eyes were filled with anticipation for the new life.
The second uncle, Lucius Black, who was always a dominant figure in the business world and struck fear into the hearts of his competitors, was actually refuted by his own mother at this moment.
A trace of grievance instantly flashed across his originally cold face. His lips pouted slightly, and he looked exactly like a wronged child. He even cast a pleading look at his nephew, Leonardo, as if his eyes were saying, "Quick, help me plead my case."
But seeing that his nephew looked calm and showed no intention of helping, he could only helplessly purse his lips, swallow the words that had reached his mouth, and stand obediently to the side, not even daring to breathe loudly.
Leonardo remained composed. His long fingers gently picked up a cherry with an alluring color and played with it between his fingertips.
He slightly raised his chin, his tone matter - of - fact, as if stating something as ordinary as could be. "How can it be called snatching if it hasn't been made public?"
After saying that, he slowly lowered his eyes, concentrating on rolling the cherry in his hand. In his deep eyes, there was a glint of determination. Then he added, "I call it striving."
"Right, striving!" As soon as the grandmother heard this, her eyes instantly lit up, and a gratified smile spread across her face. Her stubborn grandson, who had been so slow in matters of love, had finally learned to take the initiative. Naturally, she supported him unconditionally.
In her excitement, she "slapped" a thick stack of gift lists shut in her hand. With a quick movement, she raised her hand and pointed a finger in the air, pointing at her children one by one. Her eyes were filled with an unwavering authority. "I didn't call you here to chat idly. Time is pressing, and we can't neglect the etiquette. Take a good look. What's missing from this gift list? Add it quickly."
As soon as the grandmother gave the order, the servant beside her quickly and deftly handed out the photocopied lists to everyone. Everyone took the lists and became extremely focused, even more so than when signing important company documents.
The third uncle was the first to speak. His brows furrowed slightly, and he said with a puzzled look, "Why aren't there any overseas properties? I have a vineyard. The scenery there is beautiful, and it would be perfect for the young couple's honeymoon."
As soon as he finished speaking, the aunt couldn't wait to chime in. Waving the list in her hand, she said loudly, "I have several sets of antique jewelry that I just bought at auction. The craftsmanship is exquisite. Add them to the list. Luna is sure to like them."
Then, the youngest uncle was not to be outdone. He slapped his thigh and said, "This limited - edition sports car comes in five colors. They're not all on the list yet. I'll make it up. It'll definitely make Leonardo look good in front of his fiancée."
The Black family had a huge business empire, and basically, each person was in charge of different projects. So the things they gave were all products from their own companies.
Everyone chimed in, and in just a short while, the gift list was half as thick again. The grandmother looked at the thickened gift list, squinted her eyes in satisfaction, and the wrinkles on her face smoothed out. She nodded repeatedly, muttering to herself, "Not bad, not bad. Now the etiquette is complete."
When the gathering was over and the others got up and left one by one, Leonardo lingered until the end.
The grandmother noticed something was amiss. She cast a suspicious sidelong glance at him, as if her eyes were asking, "What are you up to, you rascal?" Leonardo felt a bit embarrassed under his grandmother's gaze. He smiled and said, "Grandma, I told Lulu that you're not in good health, so you're eager to see me get married. Don't let the cat out of the bag later."
Upon hearing this, the grandmother was stunned for a moment. Then she reacted, her eyes widening in anger. She raised her hand as if to hit him, muttering, "You rascal, using me as an excuse!"
Seeing that his grandmother's palm was about to land on him, Leonardo reacted quickly. He quietly took two steps back, still wearing a flattering smile on his face. "If you don't say anything, I'll take it that you understand." With that, he quickly slipped away.
The grandmother looked at her grandson's retreating back and scolded with a helpless smile, "This naughty boy." Then, she slowly raised her head, looking at the bright moon in the sky. Her eyes were filled with tenderness and reminiscence. She murmured softly, "If my old man were still here and knew that Leonardo's life - long event has been settled, he would be so happy."
At this moment, Luna was still deeply asleep. She had a very deep sleep. When she slowly woke up, the sky outside the window had already darkened.
The room was pitch - black. Only the faint light from the street lamp outside the window filtered through the gauze curtain, casting mottled shadows on the wooden floor. Luna slowly woke up. Her thick eyelashes fluttered gently, like a butterfly spreading its wings, and she slowly opened her eyes. She subconsciously reached out to rub her eyes, and her fingertips touched a bit of wetness at the corner of her eye - whether it was physiological tears from not being fully awake or the remaining emotions from a dream.
"Um..." She let out a soft哼声, and the sound was particularly clear in the empty bedroom. It was so quiet that the ticking of the wall clock's second hand could be heard, tick - tock, tick - tock, like some kind of silent urging. Luna curled up in the down - filled quilt, her arms hugging her knees. The shoulder strap of her silk nightgown slipped off, revealing her fair shoulder. She suddenly realized that this was the first time, after Richard broke his promise, that she hadn't tossed and turned sleeplessly until dawn.
The screen of her mobile phone suddenly lit up, and the dazzling white light was particularly eye - catching in the darkness. Luna jerked her head up like a startled fawn. Her blond hair was messily scattered over her shoulders. She stretched out her arm to reach for the mobile phone on the bedside table. Her fingertips trembled slightly when they touched the cold phone body.
"Leonardo..." She softly read the name of the sender, and the corners of her mouth unconsciously turned up. The short greeting on the screen seemed to carry warmth, gradually warming her cold fingertips.
"Have you eaten? Grandma had the kitchen prepare some food. Should I have someone send it over to you?"
Luna's stomach let out a timely protest. She looked down at her flat belly, and her fingertips hovered over the screen. The clock showed 8:23 p.m. It seemed too much trouble to have someone deliver food at this time. She bit her lower lip, hesitating on how to decline politely, when a second message popped up.
"I'm at the manor, very close to where you live. It's only a ten - minute drive. It's grandma's kindness. Don't worry about being a bother."
These words seemed to see through her concerns. Luna chuckled and quickly tapped on the screen with her fingers: "Okay, thank you." Only after sending did she realize that her reply was too short, so she quickly added a cute emoji.
When she exited the chat interface, the notice of a missed call from Richard's assistant at the bottom of the screen was as glaring as a scar. Luna's fingertips paused for a moment, but in the end, she still clicked on the unread message.
