While Nora was wandering through the old Damascus market, where the aroma of history mingled with the voices of merchants, her mind was preoccupied with many matters. News about Edward constantly occupied her thoughts, and although she tried to focus on her business and daily needs, the imposing presence of that Briton had changed much in her life.
Her mind lingered on the moments of their last conversation. He had felt something she couldn't explain, a feeling that could not be ignored. Yet, at the same time, she felt an obligation to her village, her trade, and her safety; perhaps that was what made her hesitant.
Zaid bin Amer was walking through the market, surrounded by some of his men. He was someone Nora had known for many years and considered like an older brother. Their closeness had grown more than ever before. Although he always interfered in her affairs, she trusted and valued his opinion; however, at that moment, she sensed that things would become even more complicated.
"You think too much, Nora, but you must not be afraid. If you're worried about him, tell me, and I will do what is necessary," said Zaid as he observed her, his eyes shifting from one gesture to another.
Nora looked at him and then said softly, "You know me well, Zaid. I have lived my entire life amidst trade and wars. I never wanted this kind of relationship to enter my life, but life brings us what we do not expect."
Zaid nodded, fully aware of Nora's feelings toward Edward. He knew that the relationship between them might be more than just a commercial deal, and perhaps this was the beginning.
After a while, Edward appeared on the horizon, drawing closer to the place where Nora was. His features now stood out differently, as if the distance that once separated them had vanished.
"Nora, I want to speak with you. There is something important you need to know regarding what is happening between us," Edward said, his face earnest.
Nora looked at him cautiously and motioned for him to sit. Her eyes carefully observed what he was about to say while, at the same time, she awaited his response. Was it just a business discussion, or did it carry more than that?
"Tell me then, Edward. We don't have much time," Nora said in a calm tone.
Taking a deep breath, Edward began his cautious speech: "Nora, I feel something strange every time I'm with you. There is something I can't explain, but I don't want this to be just a passing matter. I need you to know that I need you in my life."
Time seemed to stop when those words were spoken. Nora could not help but feel a heaviness in her heart, yet she chose to be honest with herself. Caught between this enigmatic man and her deep connection to her Eastern roots, her emotions were intertwined, and she decided to be cautious.
But she couldn't hide the smile that appeared uncontrollably. "And what will you do about it? We belong to two different worlds, Edward."
"I won't let these obstacles stop me. I will fight for what I want," Edward replied, his voice carrying a decisive tone.
In the long silence that followed, Nora looked up at the sky, reflecting on everything—her past, her identity, and the experiences that had once empowered her to be strong and independent. Yet, her heart was slowly beginning to beat for him. How could she refuse this growing feeling?
"I am not an easy person, Edward, and not everything between us will be simple. You must be prepared to face that," Nora said softly.
Edward smiled gently and said, "I am prepared. What do you say we take another step?"
Nora looked at him in silence, and gradually she began to feel that perhaps she was ready, though she needed time to decide. Finally, she smiled and said, "We shall see, but the road ahead of us is long."
