Etarna City had settled into silence after Team Galactic's retreat.
The woman Sung Jinwoo had saved had thanked him profusely before hurrying away with her Buneary, still shaken.
The gathered townspeople whispered among themselves, casting wary glances at him and his towering shadow soldier.
Jinwoo paid them no mind.
Gardenia leaned against a lamppost, arms crossed, watching him with an amused smirk.
"You know, most people don't make criminals run just by standing there."
At his side, Beru remained still, his piercing blue eyes scanning their surroundings.
His presence alone had been enough to send the grunts fleeing.
"They weren't worth fighting," Jinwoo replied, his tone indifferent.
Gardenia let out a low chuckle.
"Gotta admit, you're a hard guy to read. You show up out of nowhere, take down my best Pokémon in a one-on-one fight, and now you've got Team Galactic running scared without even battling them." Her gaze flicked toward Beru. "And you've got creatures I've never seen before. You're full of surprises."
Jinwoo said nothing.
She pushed off the lamppost and tilted her head.
"So, what's next for you? You sticking around Eterna City, or just passing through?"
This world was still unfamiliar to him.
Though he had gathered some information, there was still much he didn't understand.
For now, staying had its advantages.
"I'll stay," he said. "For now"
Gardenia grinned.
"Good. You're interesting. I wanna see what else you can do."
As she turned to leave, she flicked something toward him.
He caught it effortlessly, a small, green-and-silver badge.
"The Forest Badge," she explained. "Consider it official proof that you beat me."
Jinwoo examined it briefly before slipping it into his pocket.
Without another word, Gardenia walked off, disappearing into the city streets.
Jinwoo left Eterna City behind, stepping into the dense woods of Eterna Forest.
The towering trees cast deep shadows, the air thick with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant cries of wild Pokémon.
He extended a hand.
"Arise."
Dark energy pulsed outward.
The shadows stretched and twisted, searching for something to claim.
Nothing happened.
Of course.
Shadow Extraction only worked on the dead.
And there were no corpses nearby.
That meant he needed to hunt.
Weavile, the second Pokémon he had taken as a shadow, stood ready beside him.
It understood its master's intent immediately.
Without a sound, it vanished into the undergrowth.
Minutes later, a sharp cry pierced the silence.
Weavile returned, dragging a motionless creature in its claws.
Its fur was white with deep red markings, but now those markings were smeared with blood.
A clean kill.
Jinwoo stepped forward, his eyes glowing with blue.
He placed a hand over the lifeless body.
"Arise."
The atmosphere grew heavier.
Shadows seeped into the corpse, tendrils of darkness wrapping around it.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then...
The body twitched.
Its fur darkened slightly, the red markings turning a deep violet.
Glowing blue eyes snapped open.
The creature knelt.
"Master."
Jinwoo nodded.
Another shadow had been added to his growing army.
As Jinwoo turned to leave, something changed.
A presence.
Not human.
Not an ordinary Pokémon.
Something else.
His gaze sharpened.
"Who's there?"
The forest was silent.
Then, from the darkness, a voice, low and amused.
"You don't belong here."
A figure emerged from the shadows, its form flickering between substance and mist.
Its presence carried weight, an unnatural stillness that made even the forest seem to hold its breath.
Darkrai.
A Legendary Pokémon.
A true monster of the dark.
And it was watching him.
