The Last Few Days

The moment he had waited for had finally arrived. The pieces were falling into place, just as he had planned.

Elias had spent the last few days in a whirlwind of classified meetings, security clearances, and evaluations that would determine the next phase of his work. But even amid all the bureaucracy, he had kept his focus on one thing—Team 12.

Their performance in the contest had been nothing short of exceptional, and he had watched every moment of it unfold from behind closed doors.

From the moment the competition began, Elias had access to every feed, every report, and every decision the Teams had made.

He watched as Bao led his team through a simulated warzone, calculating every move with precision. He observed how Jiro analysed the battlefield like a master tactician, how Vivian adapted to unpredictable combat, how Aiden's reckless but effective fighting style tore through enemy ranks, and how Desmond kept the team together like the glue that held everything in place.

Elias had expected them to perform well—but what they accomplished was far beyond expectations.

When he reviewed their final mission, he knew they were ready.

They were survivors.

They were adaptable.

And most importantly… they were the perfect shields for him.

The moment he saw them win the last phase, he approved their transfer immediately.

While Team 12 was still fighting for their survival, Elias was being moved into a new role—one that gave him absolute control over his domain.

The research facility he was now in charge of was beyond classified. It was a place where technology, warfare, and human enhancement were being pushed to their limits.

The moment he had stepped inside the facility's main control room, he had felt it—the power, the potential, the responsibility.

The corridors were lined with some of the brightest minds in the world, engineers and scientists working on projects that could reshape the future of war. The security detail was elite, but even they weren't above his authority now.

His promotion had been fast-tracked.

His name now carried weight that even the highest-ranking generals couldn't ignore.

And most importantly—he had final say over every project within these walls.

The official meeting had been brief. A panel of high-ranking military officials, government strategists, and scientific advisors had sat across from him, their expressions cold and calculated.

One of them, a decorated general, had spoken first.

"Elias, given your intelligence, your contribution to technological advancement, and your potential… we're giving you full authority over this facility. From this moment forward, you are the Head of Research and the Lead Scientific Director for all classified operations here as Dr. Varis."

Elias had only nodded.

"And your security team—Team 12—will answer only to you. Their orders come from no one else."

He had expected resistance from some of the military figures in the room. But when no one objected, he had known this wasn't just a promotion. This was a test.

They wanted to see what he would do with power.

They wanted to see how he would handle absolute control.

And Elias was more than ready to exceed their expectations.

It wasn't long before he was given another addition to his life of authority—his new personal secretary.

The moment Selene Carter stepped into his office, Elias knew she wasn't just any secretary.

She had the presence of someone used to being in control—tall, graceful, and moving with the calculated precision of someone who knew how to command a room without speaking a word.

She was stunning, with emerald-green eyes that carried a mix of sharp intellect and mischief, and long auburn hair tied back in a loose but controlled style. The tailored black suit she wore fit a little too perfectly, accentuating her figure in a way that made it clear she was aware of exactly how much attention she could command when she wanted to.

Elias leaned back in his chair, watching as she approached.

"Dr. Elias Varis," she greeted, her voice smooth as silk, but carrying an edge of amusement, like she already knew something he didn't.

"Selene Carter," he replied, glancing at the file that had been delivered to him earlier. "CIA, High-level intelligence work, multiple deep-cover operations, and counter-intelligence. You seem a little Overqualified?" He asked teasingly.

Her lips curled into a smile. "So you read my file. I was starting to think I'd have to introduce myself the old-fashioned way." She moved toward his desk, her movements confident, as if she were testing how much attention he was paying to her, rather than her words.

"They didn't assign me someone like you just to keep track of my schedule," Elias said flatly, folding his hands on the desk. "You're here for something more."

Selene leaned forward slightly, resting a hand on the polished wood of his desk, her other on her hip. "Oh, you're good."

"I try."

She chuckled. "Alright, Doctor Genius, let's be honest with each other. You already know how these things work. A place like this? A facility this important? The higher-ups aren't just giving you complete control without keeping a few strings attached. They don't know what to make of you yet."

Elias exhaled slowly. "They promoted me because they needed me here. But they also want to see if I'm predictable—or if I'm a wildcard. And if I can command, given Authority"

Selene's green eyes gleamed. "Exactly. They don't fully trust you yet. But they also know they can't afford to control you too much, or they risk driving away their most valuable asset. So instead, they give you someone like me."

Elias smirked slightly. "A handler disguised as a secretary?"

Selene laughed softly. "I prefer 'charming, highly capable assistant" She purred.

Elias studied her, intrigued and after some seconds of silence he spoke again. "And how do you feel about this assignment?"

She tilted her head, pretending to think. "Well… on one hand, I get to work in the most classified research facility in the country. On the other, I'm stuck babysitting a genius who might be too smart for his own good. It's a toss-up, really."

"Babysitting?" Elias raised an eyebrow while smirking.

Selene's smile widened. "Oh, don't take it personally. You and I both know you don't need a babysitter. What you do need, however, is someone who can cut through all the bureaucratic nonsense for you. Someone who knows when to step in and when to step back. And let's be real, Doctor, you might be a genius, but social manoeuvring? Not exactly your strong suit, is it?"

Elias let out a low chuckle. "I prefer to say that I'm efficient. I don't waste time with things that don't matter."

"And yet," Selene mused, "things like influence, reputation, and understanding how to play the people around you? Those things always matter."

Elias leaned back, watching her carefully. "And that's where you come in I would guess?"

Selene winked. "Now you're getting it."

She straightened, placing a neatly organized folder on his desk. "Now, before you ask—yes, I already handled the remaining logistics for your transition here. I've compiled an overview of your staff, security measures, and key personnel you should be aware of. I also flagged a few names you might want to keep an eye on—people who might be more 'interested' in your work than they should be." She said while her Cleavage opened welcoming as she bent down to place the folders before him.

Elias flipped open the folder. The level of detail inside was impressive. She had already compiled thorough dossiers on everyone in his chain of command, complete with notes on potential alliances and threats.

"You did all this in under twenty-four hours?"

Selene shrugged. "I like to be prepared. Besides, it helps that I already did my homework on you before I even got here." She said while putting a strain of her hair behind her ear seductively.

Elias raised an eyebrow smiling. "You were watching me before we even met?"

Selene smirked. "Oh, Doctor, you have no idea."

He exhaled, setting the file down. "Alright, Selene. You're clearly more than just a secretary. So tell me—what do you think about my new Bodyguards, Team 12?"

She tapped a manicured finger against her lip, her tone shifting slightly into something more analytical. "They're good. Better than expected, actually. They work together exceptionally well—that's rare for a group thrown into a high-stakes, no-win situation. But they're not just fighters. They're adaptable. Loyal. They didn't just fight to win; they fought to protect each other. That makes them dangerous—but also the perfect weapons, if wielded correctly."

Elias nodded slowly. "And what about Bao?"

Selene crossed her arms. "He's sharp. Calculating. He leads by example rather than by command, which means his team trusts him more than they probably should. That kind of loyalty is hard to break."

Elias glanced back at the dossier. "And you don't think they'll have a problem with taking orders from me?"

Selene smiled, leaning forward again, just enough to be distracting. "Oh, they'll follow you. They just don't know it yet."

Elias chuckled softly. "You're dangerous."

Selene winked. "That's why they put me here, Doctor."

Elias closed the file and stood, meeting her gaze directly. "Alright. If you're going to be my assistant, let's get one thing straight—you don't just work for them any more. You work for me."

Selene's smile was slow, almost seductive as she reached for his tie, fixing it just slightly, just enough to throw him off for a fraction of a second.

"Oh, Elias," she purred, her voice teasing. "I think you'll find that I was always yours to begin with." She said seductively into his ear as she came closer, almost touching it with her lips.

Remembering the first few days when he had to adjust to her constant flirting, he smirked in retrospective.

Now, as he stood in the research facility's command centre, watching the transport carrying Team 12 arrive, he felt a sense of satisfaction unlike anything before.

Everything was ready.

Everything was falling into place.

When he saw them step out of the transport, their faces filled with uncertainty, frustration, and determination, he knew—this was the moment where everything changed.

They had proven themselves in fire.

And now…

They belonged to him.

Elias smiled to himself evilly as he looked at them from his office window, from where he could oversee the whole lobby.

"Welcome to the next stage of your lives."
