The tunnel was cold, damp, and filled with the scent of rust and decay. Kade tightened his grip on his plasma blade, his enhanced vision scanning the darkness ahead. Nova, just a step behind him, had her pistol raised, her cybernetic eye glowing faintly as it adjusted to the low light.
The figure before them—part human, part machine—stood still, its red eyes analyzing them. It had no Syndicate insignia, no visible rank, just the terrifying presence of something engineered for one purpose: elimination.
"Kade Ronin," it rasped, voice hollow yet unnervingly familiar. "The last Enforcer."
Kade clenched his jaw. "Yeah? Who's asking?"
The creature tilted its head. "Not who. What."
In a blur, it lunged.
Kade barely had time to react, his blade clashing against the creature's arm—only to find it reinforced with an energy shield. The impact sent vibrations up his arm. Before he could counter, the thing twisted, driving a metal knee into his gut. The force sent him skidding back.
Nova fired, her pulse pistol sending three rapid shots into its chest. The creature barely flinched.
"Nova, move!" Kade shouted.
She dove just as the creature's arm split open, revealing a cannon that fired an explosive round. The blast scorched the tunnel walls, throwing sparks into the air. Kade sprang up, charging forward.
He feinted left, then spun right, bringing his blade in a downward arc. This time, it connected, searing through the creature's shoulder. It let out a guttural growl, blackened circuits sizzling. But it still didn't fall.
"What the hell is this thing?!" Nova yelled.
"A problem," Kade muttered.
The creature twisted its neck unnaturally, the red glow in its eyes intensifying. Then, for the first time, it smiled.
"I… remember you."
Kade's breath hitched. He had fought countless Syndicate experiments before, but something about this one felt personal.
"Get out of here," he told Nova.
"You're insane if you think I'm leaving you with—"
"Go!"
The creature lunged again. Kade met its attack head-on, their movements a deadly dance of speed and precision. But even as they fought, Kade's mind raced. The way it spoke, the way it knew him—he needed answers.
Then, the creature made a mistake. It overextended, its balance thrown off. Kade seized the moment.
With a roar, he drove his plasma blade deep into its core. Sparks erupted, the red glow in its eyes flickering.
And then it laughed.
"You… can't stop it," it whispered.
"What?"
"The Syndicate's new project." Its voice was weaker now. "You think you're running from them. But they're herding you."
Kade's stomach turned cold. "What are they planning?"
The creature's eyes dimmed, its body twitching as it collapsed. Before it could say more, its systems shut down, leaving behind only silence.
Nova stepped forward, breathing hard. "That was not normal."
Kade stared down at the thing, his grip tightening around his blade. The Syndicate wasn't just hunting him—they were guiding him somewhere.
But why?
Before he could process it, Nova placed a hand on his shoulder. "Hey. You okay?"
The concern in her voice caught him off guard. He had always seen her as a sharp-tongued fighter, a survivor who rarely showed softness.
"I don't know," he admitted.
Nova hesitated, then smirked. "Well, that's a first."
Kade rolled his eyes, but he couldn't ignore the way her fingers lingered slightly before pulling away. For a brief moment, in the middle of all this chaos, he felt something… different.
"Come on," Nova said, holstering her pistol. "We need to find out what the hell we just fought."
Kade nodded, but as they moved deeper into the tunnels, a thought gnawed at him.
If the Syndicate was truly herding them, then what waited at the end of the path?
And why did it feel like something—or someone—from his past was pulling the strings?
To be continued…
