Zach and I were the first to reach our usual table in the cafeteria. It was only their first day with us, so things were still a bit new. We claimed our spot near the back.
As we settled in, I pulled out my smartphone to pass the time while we waited for the others. Zach, still adjusting to the new environment, was naturally curious and leaned over to see what I was up to.
"Getting the lay of the land, or just killing time?" Zach asked, his tone casual but interested.
"Both," I replied, scrolling through my Instagram. "Just checking on a few things."
Zach's eyes widened when he noticed me switching between accounts on the app. "Wait, how many accounts do you have on there? Are you running some secret double life?"
I grinned, enjoying his reaction. "Not quite. I've got different accounts for different interests—personal stuff, motivation, movies, and yeah, one for soccer."
He laughed, shaking his head. "That's intense, man. Are you sure you're not hiding a harem or something?"
"Nah," I said, rolling my eyes. "I just like keeping things organized."
Zach grabbed my phone and started scrolling, as if to verify what I told him. As he continued to scroll, something caught his eye. "Who's Leah? You're not hiding a girlfriend from them, are you?"
"She's a classmate from Springdale," I said, a little too casually. "Ethan started talking to her first, then introduced us. We don't really know each other."
I scrolled past her name, but for some reason, my thumb hesitated before locking my phone.
Zach smirked. "Uh-huh, sure. The hesitation says otherwise, bro."
"Shut up," I muttered, stuffing my phone in my pocket.
Before Zach could press further, the rest of the gang started filtering in. Ethan, Ryan, and Adrian showed up first, with Julian, Logan, and Owen right behind them. They slid into their seats, filling up the table.
Lena, Sarah, and Nina weren't far behind, laughing about something as they approached. Nina waved at Adrian as they joined us, while Lena suddenly froze, staring at the new faces. "Wait, so these are the guys who messed with us in the finals?"
Ryan grinned. "Yep, those would be them."
Zach leaned back in his chair, smirking. "Ladies, meet the newest members of the crew. That's Zach," he said, pointing to himself, then gestured to the others, "and these are Owen and Adrian. You might remember them from our... memorable introduction."
Nina smiled at Adrian. "Yeah, we've already met in class."
"Nice to meet you, finally," Lena said, eyeing them playfully. "You guys sure made an impression."
"Hopefully a good one," Owen said, chuckling.
Sarah gave a small wave. "I'm Sarah, by the way."
"Lena," she added.
Zach turned back to the group, his grin widening. "Oh, and guess what? Daniel's been chatting with a girl named Leah. Met her at the mall. Sounds like a big deal, right?"
Lena raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Daniel, are you keeping secrets from us?"
"It's not like that," I protested. "Ethan knew her first. We just barely chat."
Ethan chuckled, shaking his head. "You've been chatting with her? I introduced you, but I never got that far. Daniel's really stepping up his game! Did you ask your parents' approval? We need to talk to her ourselves."
"Or," I said, trying to steer the conversation back on track, "we could focus on the exams coming up. We're still on for that study session tonight, right?"
"Definitely," Lena agreed. "We need to hit the books."
"Especially for math," Nina added with a sigh. "I'm doomed otherwise."
Ryan glanced over at Adrian. "You in?"
Adrian, ever the quiet one, nodded. "Yeah, I'm in."
"Cool," Julian said, rubbing his hands together. "We'll meet at that café downtown. Let's knock this out."
As we dug into our lunch, the conversation flowed easily, filled with jokes and plans for the study session. Even with the new faces, it felt like we'd all been friends forever. By the time lunch was over, we were all set for tonight, ready to take on the exams together.
Later that night, we gathered at the cozy café downtown. It was the perfect spot, with big tables, good lighting, and—most importantly—great snacks. The warm atmosphere and the quiet buzz of the late-night crowd made it an ideal place to focus and unwind. We pushed a couple of tables together in a corner, spreading out our textbooks, notebooks, and laptops, ready to tackle the first-term exams as a team.
Ethan plopped down in his chair with a grin, setting a tray of drinks in the center of the table. "Alright, brains and brawn, let's get to it. We've got a week to turn ourselves into geniuses."
Owen, already nibbling on a cookie, raised an eyebrow. "Speak for yourself. Some of us are here for the snacks, not the stress."
Zach smirked as he organized his notes. "Snacks and knowledge, Owen. That's the winning combo."
The door to the café jingled softly, and I looked up to see Lena, Sarah, and Nina walking in. Even though we'd all agreed to meet, seeing them in their casual outfits rather than school uniforms was refreshing. Nina was in a light, flowy dress that matched her bright personality, Lena in a cozy sweater and jeans, and Sarah, ever the trendsetter, in a band tee and skirt combo that somehow looked effortlessly cool.
"Hey, you guys didn't start without us, did you?" Nina teased as she pulled out a chair next to me.
"Wouldn't dream of it," I replied with a grin. "We were just getting warmed up."
Sarah took a seat across from Julian, her eyes scanning the table. Julian smirked as he unwrapped a chocolate bar. "You forgot the caffeine. This is going to be a war."
Sarah rolled her eyes. "You're so dramatic."
"And yet, you're the one making battle plans," Julian shot back, nodding at her perfectly organized notes. A flicker of amusement crossed her face.
Lena leaned back in her chair, flashing her usual mischievous smile. "Let's just hope we get more studying done than snacking. Though, by the looks of it, Owen's already lost that battle."
Owen, unfazed by the gentle ribbing, shrugged as he reached for another cookie. "I'm just keeping my brain fueled. Snacks are essential."
As we dove into our study materials, the atmosphere was a blend of focus and light-hearted chatter. Lena, Sarah, and Nina brought a refreshing energy, with their own insights and quirks adding to the dynamic. Lena was quick with a joke, Sarah kept us organized, and Nina managed to keep things lively with her offbeat humor.
At one point, Sarah was explaining a particularly tricky history concept, and Ryan, who had been struggling, suddenly perked up. "Okay, that actually makes sense now. You should be our teacher, Sarah."
She laughed, shaking her head. "I'd probably get fired for cracking too many jokes."
Lena joined in. "But at least class would be fun!"
Owen, who had been quietly observing, finally chimed in. "You know, I think we've actually got a pretty good group here. Brains, humor, snacks… what more could we need?"
"Maybe some actual studying?" Logan quipped, glancing at the growing pile of snack wrappers.
"Details, details," Ethan waved it off with a grin. "We've got this."
As the session continued, it became clear this wasn't just about preparing for exams. We were learning from each other, not just about the subjects, but about how to work together, how to laugh through the stress, and how to support one another.
After a particularly intense stretch of math problems, Nina stretched dramatically, leaning back in her chair. "Okay, I officially need a brain break. Who's up for a quick round of trivia?"
"You're on," Julian said, always ready for a challenge. "But only if it's snack-themed."
The group erupted in laughter, the tension of studying momentarily forgotten.
And as the night went on, alternating between studying and goofing off, I couldn't help but feel this study session was about more than just exams. It was about the friendships we were strengthening, the trust we were building, and the memories we were creating. We might have started the evening as a bunch of students cramming for exams, but we were ending it as something more—friends who had each other's backs, no matter what.
