Dan-Bi had learned to live in shadows.
To be unseen.
Unnoticed.
A ghost walking through the world of men.
But the Crown Prince was making that impossible.
Because no matter how much she tried to disappear—
He kept looking.
---
It was late when she left the library.
The palace corridors were empty, the lanterns casting flickering shadows on the walls.
Dan-Bi adjusted the scrolls in her arms, her mind still filled with battle strategies and ancient laws.
She did not expect anyone to be awake at this hour.
But as she turned a corner—
She almost collided into him.
The Crown Prince.
Dressed in a simple black robe, his hair loosely tied back, he looked nothing like the royal figure that commanded courtrooms.
For a moment, they simply stared at each other.
Then, he tilted his head. "You study late."
Dan-Bi exhaled, steadying herself. "Knowledge does not wait for sunrise."
His lips curved slightly. "A scholar's answer."
She gave a slight bow and made to step past him—
But he spoke again.
"You are different from the others."
Dan-Bi stilled.
A dangerous statement.
She turned back, keeping her face carefully neutral. "Different how, Your Highness?"
The prince studied her.
As if the answer was just beyond his grasp.
"As if…" His brow furrowed. "As if you do not belong here."
Dan-Bi's breath caught.
He didn't mean it as an insult.
But the words struck deeper than he could know.
Still, she forced a chuckle. "That is a dangerous assumption, Your Highness. If I do not belong here, where else would I belong?"
His gaze flickered.
As if the thought had never occurred to him.
He said nothing more.
And for that, Dan-Bi was grateful.
She bowed once more and disappeared into the night.
But even as she walked away, she could feel it.
The weight of his gaze.
The lingering questions in his silence.
And the slow, creeping dread that told her—
She was running out of time.
