Chapter Nine: Threads of Connection
The following morning, Izuku stood in front of his mirror, adjusting his uniform absentmindedly. His mind was spinning with everything that had happened over the past few days—the rogue robot, the forge's growing influence, and the unexpected dynamic building between him, Mei, and Momo. Every moment felt heavier, as though threads of his life were being pulled in directions he hadn't anticipated.
The pendant hummed faintly against his chest, its warmth ever-present now. It felt alive, as though it were aware of his thoughts. Izuku sighed, shaking his head. He couldn't let his worries consume him, not when there was still so much to do.
Today, he had promised to meet Mei and Momo in the lab to continue refining the Harmony Suit's modifications. Mei had been ecstatic about testing out the new energy stabilization module they'd brainstormed, while Momo had offered to help create prototype materials for the suit's modular components. The thought of seeing them both again brought a small, nervous smile to his face.
---
The Support Course lab was buzzing with energy when Izuku arrived. Mei was already there, as usual, surrounded by a chaotic mess of tools and blueprints. She had a welding mask pushed up onto her forehead and was holding what looked like a half-assembled stabilizer, her hands smudged with grease.
"Midoriya!" she called out, grinning widely as he stepped through the door. "You're late! I've already started testing the module, and you're gonna love this—it's got a 15% higher efficiency rate than we estimated! Oh, and I added a little something extra. You'll see!"
Izuku chuckled nervously, setting his bag down. "Sorry, Hatsume-san. I had to stop by the dorms to grab some notes. What did you—"
Before he could finish, the door opened again, and Momo stepped inside, carrying a small box filled with neatly labeled vials and materials. She looked as composed as ever, her calm presence a stark contrast to Mei's boundless energy.
"Good morning, Midoriya-san, Hatsume-san," she greeted, offering them both a polite smile. "I brought the materials we discussed. I think these should work well for the modular components."
"Yaoyorozu-san!" Izuku said, his voice a little too bright. "Good morning! Thank you for bringing those."
Momo nodded and set the box down on the table, her movements graceful and deliberate. "It's no trouble at all. I'm excited to see how this project develops."
Mei clapped her hands together, her grin widening. "Perfect! Let's get started, then. Midoriya, you're on diagnostics. Yaoyorozu, you can help me with assembly!"
The three of them quickly fell into a rhythm, their individual strengths complementing each other in ways that felt almost effortless. Mei's creative ingenuity, Momo's analytical precision, and Izuku's knack for problem-solving all came together to push the project forward. It was messy, chaotic, and exhilarating.

By the time they paused for lunch, the lab was scattered with bits of metal, wires, and half-finished prototypes. Mei leaned back in her chair, wiping her forehead with a satisfied grin. "This is gonna be the best support tech U.A. has ever seen. Hands down."
Momo smiled, taking a sip of her tea. "It certainly has potential. But we'll need to ensure the modular components are stable under high-stress conditions. I can run some simulations later to test durability."
"You're so organized, Yaoyorozu," Mei said, her tone a mix of admiration and playful teasing. "I don't know how you stay so calm all the time. Midoriya and I are over here flying by the seat of our pants half the time."
Izuku laughed nervously, scratching the back of his head. "I wouldn't say that… You're both amazing in your own ways."
Mei's grin turned sly. "Aw, look at you, playing the diplomat. You're too nice, Midoriya."
Momo chuckled softly, her cheeks faintly pink. "He's just being honest. It's one of his strengths."
Izuku felt his face heat up at the compliment, and he quickly busied himself with his notes to avoid their gazes. The dynamic between the three of them was growing more comfortable, but it also felt… complicated. There was a tension he couldn't quite place, as though something unspoken lingered in the air.

Later that afternoon, as they wrapped up their work for the day, Mei suddenly clapped her hands together with an idea. "Hey, we should celebrate our progress! How about dinner? My treat!"
Izuku blinked, surprised. "Dinner? That sounds nice, but you don't have to treat us, Hatsume-san."
"Nonsense!" Mei said, waving a hand dismissively. "You two have been a huge help, and we deserve a break. Plus, I've got some new ideas I want to bounce off you. It'll be fun!"
Momo hesitated, glancing at Izuku. "I wouldn't want to impose…"
"You're not imposing!" Mei said firmly. "Come on, it'll be great. What do you say, Midoriya?"
Izuku felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. Dinner with Mei and Momo sounded… nice. Really nice. But he couldn't shake the feeling that the dynamics between them were shifting in ways he wasn't entirely prepared for.
"S-sure," he said finally, offering a small smile. "That sounds like a great idea."

The small restaurant Mei picked was cozy and unassuming, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. The three of them sat at a booth near the window, the warm glow of the lights creating an intimate atmosphere. Mei was as animated as ever, gesturing wildly as she talked about her latest ideas, while Momo listened with quiet interest, occasionally offering her own insights.
Izuku found himself relaxing, the weight of his worries easing as he enjoyed their company. For the first time in days, he allowed himself to simply be present, to laugh and talk without the constant pressure of the forge or its mysteries looming over him.
As the evening went on, he couldn't help but notice the way Mei's eyes lit up when she talked about her inventions, or the way Momo's voice softened when she spoke about her own aspirations. They were both so different, yet equally inspiring, and he felt a deep sense of gratitude for their friendship.
But beneath the warmth of the moment, the forge's presence still lingered, a quiet reminder of the shadows that continued to stir. Izuku knew the peace wouldn't last forever, but for now, he chose to hold onto it.
After all, some connections were worth fighting for.
