After marrying him, I've been left to deal with all the household matters, big and small. I even have to change the light bulbs. No wonder he said I had experience.
I put the tablet aside, not wanting to read any more of those hurtful comments.
After washing off my face mask, Nolan suddenly leaned in close and whispered in my ear.
"Jolene, Cian needs me to go over for something. You get some rest."
I curled up in bed and mumbled an agreement.
As he was getting dressed, I asked softly.
"Nolan, if you don't come back tonight, can I use one of 'get out of jail free' cards?"
I looked at him, my voice trembling slightly from sadness.
His hands didn't pause as he tied his tie, smiling as usual.
"Go ahead and use it."
Nolan fixed his hair, showing no concern whatsoever.
"I'll definitely be back in a bit. That 'get out of jail free' card won't be of any use today!"
Seeing his carefree expression, I held back the hot tears in my eyes and burrowed into the covers.
"Okay."
It's 10 PM now, and he said he'd be back soon.
I asked someone to buy me pastries from my favorite bakery.
Cian just posted a photo on social media, celebrating a date with his girlfriend.
At that moment, Nolan happened to send a message.
"Found Cian, I'll be back soon."
It was nearly midnight.
I looked at my old social media posts on my phone, one of which I had posted after accepting Nolan's proposal.
I clicked to repost it to my feed.
"Time flies."
Nolan commented with a heart emoji below.
Then he sent me a picture of his desk.
"Working, thinking of you, darling."
I closed his chat window.
I didn't respond any further.
He probably forgot that I had taken that photo last month using his phone.
It wasn't a photo from today at all. He wasn't just lying to me, he was also trying to placate me.
Felicity also posted an update, seemingly meant for me to see.
"You promised to marry me when we grew up, but you broke your word and then told me you regretted it."
In the photo, their hands were intertwined, with the small mole on Nolan's index finger clearly visible.
I sat on the couch, watching the proposal video Nolan had recorded, while eating the pastry I had bought.
The pastry I used to love so much now tasted bland.
Maybe I just don't like it anymore. And it wasn't just pastry that I disliked.
There was no further word from Nolan.
I placed my phone on the coffee table and began packing up my belongings.
It was already midnight.
I was about to use my last "get out of jail free" card.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was Nolan calling.
"Jolene, are you asleep? Don't wait up for me, I've got something going on here. I won't be coming home tonight."
"Use the 'get out of jail free' card first. I'll bring you pastry when I come back tomorrow. I've got to go now, hanging up."
Before I could say anything, Nolan had already hung up. It took me a moment to react as the dial tone sounded.
As I set my phone back on the coffee table, I accidentally knocked it against a mug.
That couple's mug we had made together after our engagement instantly shattered into two halves.
Perhaps it was a sign that our relationship, too, should be cut clean in two.
I opened WhatsApp and clicked on Nolan's profile picture.
"Didn't get a chance to say it earlier, but the get out of jail free card is gone."
"Let's get divorced."
Immediately after, my phone started ringing like crazy.
