Kael rode out at dawn.
The battlefield was already being stripped bare—scavengers picking through corpses, soldiers looting the dead. The scent of blood lingered, but Kael pushed it from his mind. His focus was on the road ahead.
King Varos had sent him on a mission, one that would decide the fate of the war. Find Solmara. Retrieve the blade. Fulfill the prophecy.
He still didn't believe in fate.
But he did believe in power.
A dozen of the king's finest warriors had been sent with him, led by Captain Aldric himself. Kael rode beside him in silence, their horses moving at a steady pace toward the distant mountains.
"The king values you," Aldric said after a long stretch of quiet.
Kael snorted. "The king values victory."
Aldric smirked. "And he believes you'll give it to him." He cast a glance at Kael. "Do you believe it?"
Kael didn't answer.
They rode on.
The land stretched before them—rolling hills giving way to dense forest. Somewhere beyond the trees, the ruins of the Old Kingdom awaited. And deep within those ruins, if the seer's words were true, lay Solmara.
Kael wasn't sure what he expected to find.
He only knew that something inside him—something unshakable—was drawing him forward.
By nightfall, they made camp at the edge of the woods. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth, the crackling fire their only source of warmth.
Kael sat apart from the others, sharpening his blade. He had always preferred solitude.
But tonight, he was not alone.
A rustle in the trees made him tense. His hand went to his sword, his senses sharpening. Footsteps. Light. Careful.
Not an animal.
Someone was watching him.
He rose slowly, his grip firm on the hilt of his blade. "Come out," he called into the darkness.
For a moment, nothing.
Then—a woman stepped into the firelight.
Kael froze.
She was unlike any warrior he had ever seen—clad in dark, flowing robes, her golden eyes luminous in the dim light. Her presence was otherworldly, her gaze sharp enough to cut.
"You seek Solmara," she said, her voice calm. Certain.
Kael narrowed his eyes. "Who are you?"
The woman studied him, tilting her head slightly. "The one who will show you the truth."
A breeze stirred, carrying the scent of something ancient. Powerful.
Kael knew, without understanding why, that his journey had just changed forever.
And he had no way of knowing if it would lead to glory—or ruin.
Next Steps:
Kael has now encountered Seraphine, though he does not yet know her name or her connection to Solmara. Tension, mystery, and destiny are tightening.
