Chapter 6 Balance of Flame and Blood

(Late Autumn – 68 Days Before Graduation Exam – Period of the Land of Waves Arc)

The air was colder than usual.

Not from weather — but from something unseen. A pressure that had been rising across the Hidden Leaf. Shinobi on the rooftops were quieter now. ANBU units doubled their patrol rotations. Chuunin runners avoided eye contact when delivering scrolls to the Hokage's office.

Rumors of an Akatsuki cell movement in the west.

A surge in black market scroll trafficking.

And whispers of a lone survivor of the Ryūketsu clan… resurfacing.

But none of that concerned the children of the Academy.

Or at least, that's what the adults told themselves.

[Scene: Mission Simulation Yard — Week 7 of Autumn Term]

The leaves were almost gone. Brown now. Slick with rain.

The training fields had been converted into open terrain with foliage cover, river trenches, and faux-hostage stations rigged with real explosive tags.

Inuzuka Hana, senior instructor and medic-nin, stood at the perimeter.

Hana: "Remember, this is a live field simulation. The traps will activate. You bleed — you get pulled. You break — you get benched. You die—well… try not to."

Her voice wasn't cruel. Just honest.

It was time.

Satoshi adjusted the tight wraps on his fingers. Not for show. For grip.

His kunai were still second-hand. He'd sharpened them the night before using chakra pulse friction — a technique he invented to save money.

He crouched in a tree, watching the test area.

Internal Monologue:

"Three enemy chakra sources. Two static. One roaming. Hostage likely within the southeast trench. Entry point is rigged. Tag is masked behind water scent — trap laid by a tracker."

He marked his path in mental segments.

• Zone A: Entry – Avoid Kiba's side. He's too loud.

• Zone B: Mid-pressure field – set a decoy clone to draw tag reaction

• Zone C: Capture and retreat — preferably without Naruto shouting

Naruto (from a distance): "Yoshhh!! Let's gooo!!"

…too late.

The moment Naruto landed, three flash tags detonated around him.

He dropped flat on instinct, but shrapnel kissed his right leg — shallow, but clean.

Satoshi didn't flinch.

But he noted it.

"Tag yield confirmed. Radius four meters. Fragments directed inward. This wasn't to scare. This was to maim."

[Scene: Satoshi's Assault — Zone B]

He moved like a shadow bent by wind.

He didn't just avoid traps — he read their creators.

He closed in on the roaming sentry — a high-level clone of an enemy jonin — programmed to mimic real movement patterns.

The blade came at his neck. Satoshi ducked, twisted. But the clone was fast.

Too fast.

It caught his arm — a flash of pain and warmth. Blood.

First blood of the exam.

He fell back, palm dragging into the dirt.

But it wasn't retreat.

He smeared the blood into ink, whispering—

"Ryūketsu Style: Burn Mark Sealing."

A small glyph pulsed under the clone's feet — and then its leg burst into scorched chakra, disintegrating it.

He sat there for a moment, hand still twitching from the hit.

His Thought (shaken):

"That wasn't a simulation strike. That clone was tuned too tight. Too lethal."

He looked around.

And saw the edge of a mask flash — just for a moment — behind the simulation curtain.

Root.

They were watching.

No… they were interfering.

[Scene: Medical Tent – Post Simulation]

Naruto's leg was bandaged. Nothing broken.

Sakura lectured him. Kiba laughed.

Satoshi sat alone, cleaning the gash on his forearm with cold water. No chakra. Just cloth.

He pressed the wound harder than necessary.

Not out of pain.

Out of focus.

Kakashi entered without warning.

Kakashi: "You're being monitored."

Satoshi didn't look up. "I know."

Kakashi: "Danzo?"

Satoshi: "Who else?"

Kakashi leaned against the wall, voice lower.

Kakashi: "They're testing you with real chakra aggression. That clone should've only bruised you. It cut you. That's a violation."

Satoshi (dry): "Will anyone be punished?"

Kakashi: "No."

Silence.

Kakashi: "You did well. Your sealing was efficient."

Satoshi (quiet): "I was too slow."

Kakashi stepped forward. For once, his voice lost its usual ease.

Kakashi: "Being a shinobi means bleeding. It's not about avoiding the wound. It's about deciding why you're willing to take it."

He left Satoshi with that.

The words echoed longer than they should've.

[Cutaway: Danzo's Hidden Chamber]

A Root agent kneeled. Mask cracked.

Danzo: "You failed to bait him."

Root Agent: "He didn't follow the aggression pattern. He calculated outside of the template."

Danzo (coldly): "Then escalate. I want him under my heel before graduation.

The Ryūketsu blood… was never meant to be free."

[Final Scene – Outside the Academy That Night]

Rain began to fall.

Slow at first. Then harder. It masked the blood still fresh on Satoshi's arm.

He walked home with his scroll in one hand and his kunai case in the other. His headband wasn't on yet. He hadn't earned it.

But he felt its weight already.

Inside him, the dragon stirred again.

And this time, it whispered…

"You survived the wound.

Now show them why you were born to wield it."
