Chapter 15: Future Plans
3rd person POV
For the past few days, Samuel had talked with his dad about traveling to Nexus using the realm tunnels. Starting from one of the federation strongholds in Nexus would provide him with a safer start than just teleporting by using his Karna.
The federation had used realm tunnels to teleport to many different locations within Nexus. In locations that were deemed suitable for establishing a base, they created strongholds there. These strongholds were the size of small cities so they could accommodate tens of thousands of people.
Since you could travel with any technology to Nexus it made construction easier and faster. With the help of large machines, robots, and Karna users with suitable abilities. The creation of these strongholds only took a few months to be fully built. The federation has already built 8 strongholds. With two of them being within the territory of the native civilizations from Nexus.
One of these civilizations is called the Artica Empire. Its territory was equivalent to a large continent and its military power was very strong. This is some of the information that Samuel and Jack have received.
After making all their preparation they were ready to leave. Jack was very nervous about returning to Nexus. His last experience was something he never wanted to go through again but luckily they would be going to a federation stronghold. So that calmed him down a bit. He went on leave from work and took advantage of all his saved-up days off to spend as much time with his son as possible.
Jack worked for a well-known IT company on Earth. He specialises in cybersecurity so he made good money. The kind that allowed to buy guns, armor and other weapons. He wasn't good at close combat so he took the rifles. While Samuel took the pistols and the reinforced daggers.
They arrived at their sector hall. After paying a large sum of 20000 credits they were allowed to use the realm tunnels to go to Nexus(10k for each person. Travelling to any planet in the federation costs 1k credits per person). The father-son pair stood before the portal "Let's do this Dad. I'll go in first" Samuel said as he walked into the portal. Only to be stopped by an invincible wall. "what the hell" Samuel was confused until a golden panel appeared before him. It read
"Unable to enter Nexus until the mission has been completed.
Mission: master the basic abilities of your Karna. (Progress: 60%)"
Samuel didn't know how he could see the panel it was as if it got directly projected into his mind. Frustration was building in his chest. ' why is everything I do always failing ' he thought to himself as he walked out the portal 'So this is the why I haven't been forcefully teleported to Nexus like the others' Samuel thought to himself. He met Jack who was confused by his return.
He explained what happened and Jack sighed. "Let's go back then we will do this another time," Jack said. "No Dad. It's been 2 years since Nexus arrived and we haven't explored it. Take this chance to learn as much about it as you can and increase your strength. I'll go get my refund and train at home." Samuel said.
Jack wanted to reduce but he knew with the changes happening to the federation strength was becoming more and more important as days went by. He felt bad that a mission was keeping Samuel from entering but there was nothing they could do about it. Ever since Nexus arrived the concept of missions had been normalised.
The Will of Nexus would give people missions to complete. It wasn't a regular thing. But it had happened enough times for people to find it normal.
Some could be refused while others couldn't. Just like the 7-day survival mission given to those who are forcefully teleported to Nexus. This happens if a person spends a year without entering Nexus after they receive their Karna. Jack then walked into the portal and vanished.
Samuel walked back to the reception, got his refund and went back home using a taxi. Jack had already delivered their car to the stronghold before they reached the portals. So Samuel had no choice but to take a taxi.
…
Time went by as Samuel kept improving his abilities and training his combat skills at home. Since he couldn't go to Nexus he settled for being his dad's strategist.
Throughout Jack's journeys into Nexus, he had made great profit. The money he made in one week was equal to what he would make in a month or more of work. So he quit his job and became a full-time freelance explorer.
It was dangerous on multiple occasions. But thanks to Samuel's plans and strategies he made it out each time. Jack had become an excellent marksman. Thanks to his karna giving him full control of most tech he was able to use any electronic gun with amazing accuracy. While many explorers suffered deaths due to lacking knowledge about the creatures found in Nexus.
Samuel and Jack knew how to deal with many of them. From goblins, slimes, elemental monsters and even werewolves. They knew most of their weaknesses and how to get rid of them. But it was Samuel's various plans to deal with unknown variables that truly saved Jack's life. Jack would go around gathering Intel about targets and their location. Then send that information back to Samuel who would then devise a plan on how to take down the enemy. Whether it was through using known weaknesses or the environment to their advantage.
The father-son pair made an incredible team. And Jack grew in strength as time went by. The arrival of Nexus brought a new mythos power system that allowed humans to go beyond their limits. These were known as legend ranks. Every being and anything in existence has a rank depending on what they are. The more powerful the being the higher its legend rank is.
When in Nexus people gain the ability to increase these ranks through various means. But the most common and fastest way to increase your legend is to kill and defeat other legends.
The ranks from low to highest are Mortal, Walker, Voyager, Sky, Champion, Epic, and King.
These are the highest-known ranks. Many believe that they are higher ranks but entities of such ranks have not been encountered yet. Even amongst these known legend ranks, very little was known about those above the Sky rank.
Currently, the strongest in the federation were only walker rank. Although Jack was able to gain information that suggested that the federation had a Voyager-ranked individual although it wasn't confirmed.
These legend ranks are divided into 10 stages. Each stage gives a person a large boost to all the attributes. When one increases the legend ranks all stats increase by at least 3 times. So far Jack has reached the 7 stage of the mortal rank All humans start at the mortal rank.
With the way things were going, Samuel knew his dad couldn't keep exploring alone. He needed a party. The father-son pair talked about it and they decided to create a party. But there was a large problem, who should they invite? Jennifer and Tina were too busy with military missions in Nexus so they were out. Billy, Rick, and Blessed were still studying. Only once they graduated could they come.
Trying to bring in random people was dangerous. The monsters in Nexus weren't the only threats to people. Other people will attack and even kill others to steal any valuables they might have. Jack had gone through this himself. So all they could think about was to recruit people that they knew. Jack went online to contact some friends who work in the same field that he used to work in. They had many online communities and Jack knew a lot of people in these communities.
Samuel decided to contact friends from the secret club he had in high school. Most were still in either Celestial Academy or the military academy so they weren't able to help. But 3 people who had graduated were willing. The only problem is that they wanted Jack and Samuel to show them that working with them would be more profitable than working for the federation. It took some time but Samuel was able to convince them to help out Jack.
Not many were interested in joining their party from Jack's colleagues. That was until a person reached out to Jack. She said that she wouldn't mind joining but there was a problem. This lady is called Sai and she is paralyzed from the waist down, she lives on Genesis a planet far from Earth. She would only be able to use her Karna to allow perfect communication between her Samuel and the party members exploring Nexus. Her ability was very useful so Jack agreed.
It's a good thing Jack agreed because Sai was able to find us 2 more people to join the party. Both with decent combat skills and they had good morals. After a few days, their party was created and began missions. Thanks to Sai's Karna Samuel was able to watch Jack and the other party members on their adventures.
Sai's Karna produced tiny marble-sized drones that followed the team members. These drones could project holographic images of Samuel and Sai and relay their voices to the team. They were especially useful when it came to scouting.
The party was at first uncoordinated and didn't work too well. But as time passed by they got better and better. Time flew by as they made a name for themselves and they all reached the higher stages of the walker rank. They called themselves "Radiance" and the group had grown to 10 party members plus 2 tech support aka Sai and Samuel.
Before anyone released it 4 years had passed since Nexus arrived and changed their lives and Samuel had finally received the notification he had been training for.
"You have completed your mission.
Mission: master the basic abilities of your Karna. (Progress: 100%)
Rewards: …"
