Special

"His?" What does he mean? Do the remnants come from different desires?"

"It seems you misunderstood. Most remnants originate from the desires of other people; however, some are special and can come from other things. For example, the general."

"I see... And how is it that the general came from his own desires and those of his army?"

"Well, the general was always someone addicted to conquest. He loved dominating other territories and their people, though if there was something that excited him more than that, it was war. He would go into ecstasy just thinking about blood, anarchy, and the power that flowed in that chaotic field. In fact, whether it benefited him or not, he committed countless atrocious acts."

"He carried out countless massacres against the people of villages, kingdoms, countries, cities... and then enslaved those same people, forcing them to obey his orders, whether inhumane or not. There were no exceptions. Children, women, men, the elderly... and that was just one of the many things he has done throughout the time I've known him."

"Because those perverse desires were so persistent even after his death, and given that he already carried many sins on his back, he reemerged as a remnant."

"As for his army, they were the complete opposite of him. They didn't fight for power, ecstasy, blood, or dominance; they fought for the idea of a just and peaceful world. The general took advantage of that and, using his persuasion, deceived them into believing that by conquering and killing people from other territories, they would save their nation and the entire world from a potential danger, when in fact, all they were doing was wiping out innocent people who had their own families, their own desires, their own humanity. In the end, even after his death, they couldn't rest in peace."

"Because their desires for a just and peaceful world were genuine, they reemerged as remnants, only to be manipulated once again by the general."

"And that's why that army is also special, because unlike the general, they arose from pure desires without a shred of evil, even though they were corrupted by the blood and sin on their hands. You could say all of that was the general's fault, because without him, they might have been able to make the world a just and peaceful place."

"I understand..." Up until that moment, Edward hadn't fully grasped just how horrible the general was, but after hearing Cain's words, there was no doubt left in his mind about how despicable he truly was. A chill ran down his spine.

"So, will you help me deal with that bastard? If we leave him be, it's likely he'll start a war that could end the world just to fulfill his twisted desires."

"Fine, I'll help you. But you still haven't answered my question. While it's true that leaving him out there could destroy the world, why would you care? After all, you can reincarnate, I don't see how it could affect you."

Edward thought the reason was obvious. The man wasn't so insensitive that he would let the world go to hell while he saved himself and started another life. After all, when you stop feeling empathy, you stop being human, at least from his perspective.

Still, he decided to press on with his question because, from a logical standpoint, the man really didn't have any more reasons to stop the general than the hypothetical empathy he might have had.

So, he kept pressing for answers to see if there was a hidden motive; you could never be too sure.

"Hmm... Why do you want to help me stop the general? Although it may seem like a stupid question, I'm really curious to know." The man asked with a genuinely interested expression on his face.

"Really, it's a stupid question. Isn't it obvious? I don't want them to destroy the place where I live, I have people I love here, I can't just sit around knowing that at any moment, they and the world could be wiped out."

"Besides, even though I know there's a chance I might die alongside him, it's better than just waiting for someone else to solve my problems and ease my anxiety."

Upon hearing the young man's answer, Cain smiled with what seemed like genuine satisfaction; Edward's response was exactly what he had expected.

"Alright, then I'll tell you the exact reason why I'm going after the general."
