Evelyn's POV
My heart sank at the mention of Griffin's name as if time stood still. I felt Nolan's eyes boring into me. I met his gaze; he did not look happy one bit. Ethan continued to play, oblivious to the tension in the room between me and his father.
"Yes, Griffin," I replied, forcing myself to remain composed even if my insides twisted with anxiety. I couldn't let him know about the reason why I left Griffin—not yet. "He's been a part of Ethan and my life. He was there for me when nobody else was. I was in a bad place."
Nolan's jaw tightened as he processed my words. "He was a good man? That's what you think of him, is it?" His voice was low, but I could feel the protectiveness in his tone. He hated the thought of me with anyone but him. I needed to defuse the situation before it got out of hand. I didn't want my son to witness bad vibes between his parents.
"Ethan is too young to understand this."
