  I forced a smile even though it felt hollow in my throat. "Yeah, buddy. Real soon."

  But the truth was that I had no idea what awaited us in the city. The memories of our past lives were filled with joy and laughter but now drowned underneath the weight of these secret promises, threats, and desperate choices that I had made.

  The bus rumbled along the uneven roads. I just could not shake the feeling that we were going to be hunted down. I had to get Ethan to the city and have over the blood vial. It was what I had wanted, and I couldn't stop now. Ethan continued to chatter about his favourite things in the city, what he missed, and how much he couldn't wait to be back there. His voice was like a sweet melody that clashed against the force swirling in my mind.
