  "Almost there," Milo rasped, his sandy-blond hair matted with sweat. He stumbled, almost collapsing, but Lana grabbed his arm to keep him from falling.

  "Why do you always have to be so stubborn?" Lana asked, her voice tinged with frustration. "You're going to get yourself killed one of these days."

  "Better me than you," Milo replied through gritted teeth. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you."

  "You shouldn't have carried me for so long. You overexerted yourself," Lana stated as she helped Milo along.

  "You move too slowly. I couldn't take the chance that we would be caught," Milo explained. "You can't dodge bullets, but I can."
