Milo's back sank into the plush cushions, the sudden impact knocking the breath from his lungs. Lana still had her arms wrapped tightly around him. His hands instinctively found her shoulders, but before he could push her away, she pulled back just enough for him to see her face.
Her eyes.
A deep crimson hue swirled around her irises, not quite as saturated as a full-blooded vampire's, but just enough that she was under the influence of vampire venom.
"What did you do?"
"I had to do something. I couldn't just stand by and watch you risk your life again."
Milo's brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Lana's hands twisted together, her fingers trembling. "The serum. The one we found in the lab."
"No, you didn't." He exclaimed. "There's no telling what the long-term effects will be!"
Lana remained infuriatingly calm. "I knew exactly what I was doing. I did it to protect you."
"I didn't need you to protect me," Milo said.
