CHAPTER 18: How Can a Married Woman Be as Naïve as a Girl?

  I mechanically beat the eggs in the bowl, but Lucas's words had completely thrown my emotions into turmoil, stirring a sense of bittersweet sorrow deep inside me.

  Was there really no woman in his home? I suppressed my curiosity and refrained from asking.

  Lucas remained in the kitchen, and I could feel his gaze lingering on me, making me feel incredibly self-conscious.

  "The dress suits you," he suddenly remarked.

  I glanced down at the light beige dress I was wearing and, without thinking, blurted out, "I borrowed your girlfriend's new dress. Won't she be upset?"

  As soon as the words escaped my mouth, I wanted to bite my tongue off.

  He didn't answer immediately, and I didn't dare turn around. The air felt heavy and still, and my mind was a chaotic mess as I tried to guess his expression.

  "Who said I have a girlfriend?" His voice carried a hint of amusement.
