  Since the brief meeting last time, my only impression of James Reid was his stern demeanor.

  I knew I wasn't someone he would favor.

  Lucas never needed to doubt his parentage. His good looks were nearly an exact inheritance of James's, down to the oppressive aura when they turned serious.

  As James stepped inside, his piercing gaze swept over me from head to toe, effortlessly pulling out every thread of my insecurity.

  "James," I greeted out of politeness and respect.

  James's gaze shifted away from me as he entered. I quickly stepped aside to make way.

  "Don't call me by my name," he said coolly. "I won't acknowledge a daughter-in-law who lacks my approval."

  His words were emotionless, yet they struck me like a physical blow, leaving me frozen in place.

  By the time I collected myself, he was already seated on the sofa, surveying the room. Judging by his careful inspection, it was likely his first visit to the house.
