  When it comes to Xander, I only knew that James seemed to favor this younger son more, but beyond that, I knew nothing.

  I asked, "Why did he end up in prison?"

  This was a question I had wanted to ask for a long time.

  Lucas put the cigarette he had just taken out between his lips but didn't light it. He stared ahead, lost in thought, as though pondering something. I wondered if I had asked something I shouldn't have.

  Just as I was about to say something else to ease the awkwardness, the car suddenly came to a stop. I glanced out the window and saw that we had arrived at a shopping mall.

  "What are you buying?" I asked.

  The sound of him lighting the cigarette filled the car. He took a drag, then turned to me with a smile.

  "Taking you to buy clothes."

  "Again?" I asked, slightly incredulous.

  I could not agree with such extravagant behavior at all.

  "It's the change of season."
