I thought it was just a mix-up because Hughes and Bethany didn't know each other, which caused them to miss each other. But Lucas told me that Hughes had already gone inside the TV station to look for her. The staff informed him that the contestants had already left.
Bethany was unfamiliar with the area, and it was the dead of night—being a young woman in such a situation could be dangerous.
I had been drowsy before, but I woke up with a start.
"Why don't you call Bethany?" I suggested.
I could still tell right from wrong. While I wasn't too fond of Bethany, she was still a young woman. I wasn't so malicious that I wished anything bad would happen to her.
Lucas nodded and immediately dialed Bethany's number, but it went unanswered. She had just called earlier.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, his worry clear.
I reached out and grabbed his hand.
His hand felt cooler than mine.
"Don't worry," I said. "Bethany isn't a little kid; she'll be fine."
