The moment I stepped out of Salvatore's car, Lucas's gaze landed on me. He was standing on the balcony, his eyes locked with Salvatore's from afar. Salvatore casually rested his hand on the window, tapping lightly to a rhythm, a subtle, almost mocking smile on his face.
I didn't dare look up to see Lucas's expression. The feeling in my chest was already suffocating enough.
He hadn't told me he was coming back today.
I quickened my pace towards the villa, hearing Salvatore's distant "goodbye" from behind me, but I didn't turn around. My steps only grew faster.
When I entered the villa, the sound of the car speeding away reached my ears.
Lucas was still standing on the second-floor terrace, his hands resting on the railing, staring out into the distance, his posture unchanged.
"When did you get back?" I asked from behind him.
He didn't turn around immediately, but his calm voice reached me.
"Did I come back too early?"
