Macy POV
I shouldn't be surprised to see the Luna Queen waiting for me on the porch of the pack house, but I don't feel like speaking to anyone. I try to walk past her, but she has no intention of letting me go.
"Macy," She calls after me. "You have to accept what happened today."
"Nothing happened," I growl.
"Lying to yourself will only make it worse," she pleads with me.
I spin around and stare into her blue eyes. She really is lovely. Ethereal would be the right word to describe her. I don't understand how anyone ever doubted her connection to the Moon Goddess.
"Why can't I lie to myself?" I find the bravery to snap at her. "Everyone else lies to me."
She swallows hard and knows she has been caught. "We would have told you when the time was right."
"Is that so, Luna Queen?" I glare in her direction.
"Please," she begs, "call me Raven."
"What is happening?" Mom asks in confusion.
"Nothing happened," I growl, not taking my eyes off Raven.
"Macy had a vision today," Raven betrays me.
Mom goes pale. This has been her biggest fear for me. She remembers when Nyx belonged to her friend's mother. Narah was unhinged. She never learned how to balance her mind with Nyx's. They were not a good fit together.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Mom is wounded. I used to share everything with her.
I don't have a good reason for not telling her. So, I flip the guilt trip around onto her. "Why didn't you tell me that the royal twins will destroy the world without me."
The Luna Queen sucks in a sharp breath. "What did you see?"
I turn my anger onto her. "War, famine, pestilence, death, and your sons standing in the middle of it all. What are they?"
"Stop being dramatic," Mom commands, but her voice is shaking. She is scared. ''I am sure it wasn't that bad."
I look at the Luna Queen and wait. "Do you think I am lying?"
"No," she whimpers. "I have seen it too."
"This is the life you want for me?" I ask them. "To be tied to two creatures that will bring an end to everything?"
"You are supposed to save them," Raven is now crying.
I click my tongue against the roof of my mouth. "I'm going to hold your hand when I say this, but they are beyond saving."
"Macy, please," she begs. "You are our only hope."
I stand firm. "What are they?"
"They are werewolves," Mom laughs nervously.
"No," I snap at her. "They aren't. Nyx knows what they are but won't tell me."
"Just because you have an ancient, grumpy, mean wolf living in your mind doesn't mean you know everything," Mom scolds me.
"Nyx has been around for centuries," I defend my wolf. "I would wager she knows more than Raven's mate, Alpha Oliver."
"Oliver came from the Historical Pack," Mom scoffs. "No one knows more than him."
"They are Lycans," Raven blurts out.
Nyx growls loudly in my mind. I do not know what a Lycan is, but if Nyx isn't a fan, that's all I need to know.
"I will be rejecting your sons," I say with certainty.
"You can't," Raven whispers. "Lycans cannot deny their mate bond. Without you, they will destroy everything until they claim you."
"I am not an object to keep them busy," I growl. "I will not be their babysitter to make sure they don't burn the world. In fact, I would welcome it. I am tired of being Crazy Macy. Let them end it all for me."
At this point, the Luna Queen is in tears, and Mom is doing her best to console her. Suddenly, her mates come down the hall. Alpha Leo takes her upstairs while Alpha Oliver stands in front of me. There is an old book in his hands. He intends on giving it to me.
"I have enough books," I say before walking up the stairs.
Oliver cuts me off at the top of the stairs and thrusts the book into my arms. He walks away before I can give it back.
Walking into my room, I toss the book onto my bed, and the cover falls open. Curiously, I glance at the first page. A grotesque creature howls at the moon. The creature is not human but not a wolf either. It is some sort of hybrid between the two.
Against my judgment, I turn the page and start to read.
-A lycanthrope is a human that can transform into a wolf-like creature. Unlike werewolves, lycans do not shift into wolves. A lycan appears to be half wolf and half human or ape. They are much stronger and faster than their werewolf counter parts.
Lycans are thought to have come from a branch of werewolves that were closely related to the Moon Goddess. It is believed lycans ruled over other werewolves until they became too cruel for the Moon Goddess to control. Lycans were determined to keep humans and werewolves alike as pets and slaves. After seeing what the lycans had become, the Moon Goddess banished them to a realm of magical creatures, vowing never to bring them into the world of humans again.-
I read page after page until the sun begins to hang low in the sky. Closing the book, I set it beside me and squeeze my eyes shut.
It is so much information I cannot process it all. I have read hundreds of pages, and nothing has mentioned mates. So, I cannot verify if what the Luna Queen said is accurate or not.
'We could run away,' I say to Nyx, but she doesn't respond. Since the mention of lycans, she has become unusually quiet. If I didn't know better, I would guess that she is scared, but nothing scares Nyx.
My stomach rumbles loudly, but I can't bring myself to go down for dinner. I don't think I can face any of them right now. I am tired of being lied to.
Realizing I am still in my vomit splattered clothes from earlier, I decide a shower is a must. Making sure my bedroom and bathroom doors are both locked. I climb into the shower.
The water is as hot as I can make it. I like the way the water burns my skin. I am watching as my normally pale skin turns red and humming my favorite song when the scent of cinnamon fills the air around me.
I try to calm the thumping of my heart in my chest. I am naked and ninety percent sure Winston is in my bathroom.
"Hello?" I call out, but no one answers.
Sliding the door to my shower open, I peek my head out. Winston is leaning next to my towel rack. Deep lines are etched into his face, and I am scared.
