Chapter One: "Will you marry me?"

"Girl, how long are you going to be cleaning that area? I have some clothing pieces that need to be taken to the cleaners."

As she wiped the sweat from her forehead, Resena could see her aunt Larna staring down at her with that same disgusted look on her face she had always had since she first moved in when she was 9.

"Well?! Are you almost finished or not!?" …

"Uhh, yes ma'am! I'll be finished soon. Is there something you need me to do?"

Sighing in disgust, Larna simply rolled her eyes at her niece, she had felt this way about her ever since the day she came to live with her and even before then. Larna was the older sister of Resena's mother, Lucena, but ever since they were children, Lucena always seemed to be everyone's favorite. She took her niece in after the accident thinking there would be a financial reward. It turns out, Resena's parents had a clause in their will, no money or dowry would be paid on Resena's behalf until she wed. So, until then, Larna was simply stuck with this girl, of course that didn't stop her from constantly abusing her niece. Every day had seemed like a personal form of torture, why had she been saddled with this runt! To make things "fair"; she had decided Resena should spend her days as one of the family's servants,

"That's the least this little runt can do but I swear as soon as she turns 18, I am marrying her off to first person I can find so I can get my money!!!"

Larna scowled down at Resena as she scrubbed the floor,

"I said I need some clothing taken to the drycleaners. Hurry up and get finished before they close!"

"Right away ma'am!"

Prior to moving in, Resena had only met her aunt once at the funeral of her grandparents. Her mother's parents died in a mysterious house fire, the officials decided it must've been faulty wiring, but Lucena always suspected foul play. Though she never said so, it was clear there had been tension between the two sisters as Larna always accused their parents of favoring Lucena more. In truth, Larna was a spoiled child who never appreciated anything. She lived her life constantly wanting more. Larna was a very striking young woman, she had long dark hair with olive skin and large almond shaped eyes. She was tall with a slender but shaped physique; however, her mannerisms and attitude made her as ugly as black coal and dirt rocks. Over the years, her parents tried to instill values and morals, but Larna was a crude child and an even worse young woman, their parents feared she may never get married until she met her now husband Delvoy Lanster. Turns out he was just as cruel as Larna. They married once Larna turned 19 and three years later, they had their only child, a daughter named Marsell. Although very beautiful, Marsell had her parents' quality traits of cruelty a behavior many were not aware of as she was a master at making people think she was the perfect person. She had taken a particular interest in making her younger cousin's life a living hell during her stay at their house, in public however, Marsell displayed that of the perfect and concerned big sister. Only the servants knew the truth about the Lansters and how cruel they had been to Resena over the years.

"Well, well…what do we have here? And just where do you think you're going dressed like that?"

Resena stood at the doorway wearing a worn-down dress and older shoes, her hair was tied into a ponytail and her skin was flaky and dry. Her wrists were thin, and her skin was pale due to vitamin and food deficiency. As a child, people would often dote on how beautiful Resena was in her hometown, but now, as she approached 18 Resena looked anything but beautiful.

"Um, Aunt Larna is bringing me clothes to take to the drycleaners."

"Is that so? Well, I think I have a few things that need to go as well. Wait right here my darling cousin."

As Marsell left for her bedroom, Resena stood in agony, the dry cleaner's shop was a 3 mile walk to and from. Her aunt already had three bags of clothing and now Marsell wanted to add more. Resena had the slight suspicion Marsell only wanted to add clothing to make her walk more difficult. Over the years she had always done little things like that to add to her cleaning load and make things more difficult for Resena. "Oh, you just finished moping that floor? Oh, darn I need my bedroom floors mopped now", "Did you just get finished washing all the dishes? Oops, sorry, I guess I still had a few things upstairs."

"Always something" Resena thought. As she walked to the cleaner's shop, her fingers began to numb from the heavy bags of clothes.

"At this rate it'll take me forever to get there. Why'd they have to give me so much?"

In addition to Larna's three bags, Marsell piled on two more. The other servants looked on in shame as they crammed the bags into Resena's hands.

"How awful, maybe one of us should help her?"

One of the maids said to another.

"Not unless you want to lose your job. The head mistress informed us all when the young miss first arrived not to help her with any of her chores as it was her way of paying for her room and board."

Another maid chimed in,

"Oh my god! Is that why Ella was fired?!"

Ella was a maid that worked for the Lansters, she was always super nice to Resena, whenever they would lie and say there was not enough food for her to eat, Ella would sneak her food and water. One day Larna caught her sneaking Resena some soup and tea after she caught a cold, she was fired on the spot. Afterwords, Delvoy sent out a mass message board to all the servants that disobeying the Mistress' wishes or interfering with the raising of her niece would be an automatic termination. After that, the maids and servants were too afraid to even speak to Resena unless regarding work leaving her even more isolated and alone in that horrible mansion that was her home.

"They didn't say, but I'm sure that's what it was. She was always really kind to the young miss."

"That's awful! Why'd they even take her in if they didn't want to take care of her?"

"Don't you know?"

"Know what?"

Sighs "I swear you newbie maids don't know anything. The young miss was left a fortune by her parents but to keep it protected, no dowry could be paid out to whoever her caretakers were until she weds. Furthermore, her husband will have no access to the fortune until at least five years of marriage OR, until the misses conceive a child."

"Oh wow! So that's why the mistress has started looking up bachelors. I had thought she was looking for suiters for her wretched daughter."

Whispering, "You better not ever let the Mistress hear you say something like that about her daughter."

"EEK!!! I would never!!"

"Okay what the hell is all this chit chatting! Get back to work!"

At once all the maids turned about face at Ms. Diana the mansion's head caretaker.

As if in a choir, at once the maids all yelled "Yes ma'am!"

As Resena walked the miles, she began to feel even more heavy as the bags slowly weighed her down.

"Dear lord, is the cleaners farther than it normally is? I swear it didn't take this long last time. No, of course that's not it, these bags are just heavy."

As Resena continued her walk, she noticed a park bench on the right side. Exhausted from her chores and walking, she decided to sit down for a moment.

"Maybe I should just take a little nap."

Back at the mansion, Larna Lanster was scanning a tablet filled with the city of Conland's most eligible bachelors.

"I'm sure I can pick someone to marry off that runt too, I could care less what type of person he is, but I do want to choose someone with connections."

Across from her sat her husband Delvoy Lanster. Delvoy was the head of Lanster Corp; he inherited the family business from his father as he was the eldest child and only son. Delvoy was tall and handsome, he had brown smooth skin with dark neatly cut hair. His shoulders were broad and stern, and his voice was very soothing, but underneath that sultry stature lied a mean and cruel man. One who was upset that he had been "saddled" with taking care of his niece. On the night Resena arrived he could be heard talking loudly to his wife…

"Does her father not have any family she can be dropped off at? I'm not raising someone else's brat especially one that has no connections or benefits to me."

"I don't want her here either Delvoy! But my sister and her husband had money, most of which I am sure has been left to their brat. We'll keep her here until we get our hands on it!"

Later the next day, after meeting with the power of attorney over her parents' estate, Larna and Delvoy learned of the conditions regarding any financial dowry for Resena. After that, Larna decided she would keep Resena until she was old enough to marry off.

"What about this one?"

Delvoy slid over his tablet displaying a 23yr old man name Kelvin Mccoy. He was handsome enough and came from a noble family. His father was the Baron of Mortin and he himself was studying to be a lawyer. His characteristics were often described as "nice" and "demure." His family was known to be charitable and fair. Marrying Resena off to someone like this would have been ideal. However, Larna loathed the idea of Resena having a "happily ever after."

"No! I don't want that runt possibly marrying someone better than my daughter may marry! Pick someone else."

Although irritated, Delvoy did as his wife asked. In truth, he didn't care who the girl married as long as he was connected and could further boost Lanster Corp. Lanster Corp specialized in high tech software. Over the years Delvoy managed to triple the company's profits by expanding the company throughout the entire southern continent, but now he was ready to go overseas. With the money they would soon receive after Resena married and the money and/or connections they would receive from her betrothed, Delvoy was certain he would be able to expand out to the western continent and ultimately the entire globe.

"Larna, just remember that the most important thing is marrying her off to someone that will benefit the company. This isn't a competition between her and Marsell."

"I will not have that runt marry BETTER than our daughter!"

Delvoy began to grow tired of his wife and her constant need to compete with her now dead sister. There was a bigger picture that involved the expansion of his company, but Larna could not see past her petty rivalry.

"(Sigh), Larna, we had a daughter, so whoever Marsell marries we will make sure he is groomed and fit to lead and run my company once I retire. So, I have no doubt the person chosen for her will be up to standard. Right now, however, we need to focus on who is going to help the business grow. So, pick someone who can help do that and move on!"

Though she knew her husband was right, Larna secretly seethed. He just didn't understand! All those years of constantly being compared to her "perfect sister". Unlike Larna, Lucena was short with a petite hourglass figure. Her skin was a lovely shade of golden brown and she had slight freckles on her face. Her hair was a combination of honey brown and blonde, and it curled at the slightest touch of water. Her eyes were a dark olive green, and her voice was as angelic as a siren. Though she was the youngest, Lucena excelled far more than her older sister in academics as well as athletics earning her the opportunity to graduate grade school and begin college first. Like their parents, Lucena was pure and kindhearted, she often helped others and constantly fought for equality of all dubbing her the "Golden Saint" in their hometown. The citizens would often dote on her while they frowned at Larna.

"I can't believe that's their daughter." People would often say.

"Well, it's a good thing they have Lucena! She is just amazing!"

This often-made Larna angry while full of envy and resentment. The envy only grew after the death of their parents. The bulk of the finances had been left to Lucena with a note saying, "We know you will do what is right." This filled Larna with an over amount of bitterness and anger.

"How the hell could they leave her majority of the money! I was their oldest!!!"

After the funeral, Larna spent three days ranting and raving about their parents' will. After the passing of Lucena, Larna decided she would get what was owed to her one way or another through her niece.

"You'll be my personal payback you little runt."

So, from the moment Resena moved in, Larna made it her everyday mission to abuse and punish her niece as payback for her mother being favored.

"There has to be someone I can send this runt too that…."

Before she could finish her thought, Larna scrolled upon the name of Erick Steelwater, with a grin on her face, Larna lifted her tablet for a better view.

"He's perfect."

Delvoy lifted his head to find his wife smiling with a devilish glee of joy.

"I take it you found someone?"

Placing the tablet back onto the coffee table, Larna looked up at her husband and slid the tablet over. Putting his glasses on, Delvoy picked up the tablet and took a look at the person his wife chose. His eyes instantly bulked in surprise.

"Erick Steelwater? As in Charleston's oldest son? I thought he was already engaged. Again."

Erick Steelwater was a 28yr old noble. He was the oldest son of Charleston and Carlina Steelwater. Although handsome and rich, Erick had been engaged three times. Each time he got engaged; his fiancé would leave within a month of the engagement. This was because Erick was a cruel and abusive person. He grew up spoiled and entitled, he hated people who were poor, and he hated women who had opinions. He would often abuse his fiancés both physically and sexually to the point she would call the engagement off, but this never bothered him, He knew eventually he would marry someone as people were desperate to have the connections of the Steelwaters even if that met marrying their daughters off to such a horrid individual. The Steelwaters would be just the right kind of family to help expand the business, in addition to being nobles, Erick's father started a trading company that became very successful. Yes! He would be the ideal person to marry Resena off too and the fact that he was notorious for his cruel behavior made him all the more appealing to Larna. She could hardly contain herself as she smiled at her husband knowing he would not care about his reputation but would be pleased about the business aspect.

"So? What do you think?"

Delvoy placed the tablet onto the table and looked up at his wife. It was very true, he did not care one bit about Erick's cruel reputation, whatever happened to the girl was none of his concern. Afterall, she wasn't his biological daughter or niece for that matter. He did, however, care about how this marriage would benefit him. Smiling back at his pleased wife, Delvoy simply said…

"Perfect dear."

Back at the park bench, a man was standing staring at Resena as she slept.

"Is she homeless? She has several bags with her, not to mention her clothes look old and ragged. She must be homeless… right?"

Confused, the young man continued to stare at Resena, he was contemplating on whether he should wake her.

"Do I wake her up? She looks peaceful enough and I have no idea who she is. What if she's some crazed person?"

The young man took a harder look at Resena, her hair had slightly fallen from her ponytail and onto her face, her lips were slightly parted almost into a smile.

"Maybe she's dreaming of something pleasant. I don't want to bother her."

Looking up at the sky, the young man could see it was getting late. He grew concerned about the young woman's safety.

"Dammit, I can't leave her out here. It's getting late, someone may decide to rob her or worse. Guess I'll have to wake her up."

Letting out a slight sigh, the young man decided it was best to wake Resena from her slumber. Lowering down to tap her shoulder, he whispered,

"I'm really sorry about this."

Deep into a dream Resena could feel a light nug to her shoulder, she smiled slightly thinking the nug was a part of her dream, however, she could also hear what seemed to be a man calling to her.

"Hey, lady. Are you okay? She's not moving. Maybe I should call an ambulance? Ma'am?"

Resena jolted up from her nap. Realizing she was no longer dreaming and someone in fact was tapping her shoulder, she began to panic.

"Oh my god!! Oh my god! What time is it?!"

Scrambling for her bags Resena had not yet noticed the man standing in front of her with a puzzled look on his face. She began gathering her bags and looking around as if to verify where she was.

"Oh my gosh! I didn't mean to sleep this long! What time is it?!"

Just then, Resena raised her head to find the man standing before her, the one who must've woke her up. She quickly gathered herself and turned to the gentleman. Bowing her head slightly she looked at him and said in a lowered voice,

Thank you so much for waking me up. I'm very sorry if I troubled you in any way. By any chance, do you know what time it is?"

Staring at the young woman for a moment, the gentlemen answered.

"Um, it's about 4:30pm."

At that moment, Resena dropped back onto the bench, the cleaner's shop closed at 5:15pm and she was still 2 miles away. There was no way she would make it to the shop on time, which meant she would not be able to drop the clothes off. The thought of not completing her task struck instant fear into her mind. She knew her aunt and cousin would brand a particularly harsh punishment for not completing the task. Why did she have to fall asleep! Though it was true she had been exhausted from the chores she performed that day, she knew her aunt and cousin would not care one bit about her being tired. Knowing she would be punished, Resena began to cry.

Umm, ma'am? Are you okay? If you were on your way to the shelter, I think they have a service that can pick you up. Would you like me to call and verify?"

The gentleman stood staring at Resena not knowing why she was crying and what he could do to help.

"Ma'am?"

Looking up with bewildered eyes, Resena was finally able to get a good look at the man. Standing before her was a tall and handsome man. He had beautiful brown skin, big almond eyes that were light brown and dark low-cut hair. His beard and mustache were cut close and immaculate. Startled and embarrassed, Resena stood up again wiping the tears out of her eyes.

"I'm sorry! I've troubled you long enough. Please excuse me and again I am so sorry!"

The young man started at Resena even more confused. Why was she so apologetic? He was the one that made the decision to bother her.

"Ma'am, there's no need to apologize. Um, did you want me to call that service?"

"What service?"

"The service that will help you get to the shelter?"

Now Resena was confused. What was he talking about?

"I'm sorry? What shelter?"

"Hu…um, ma'am you're not going to the homeless shelter on Shelton?"

Bewildered, Resena's eyes grew large, had she looked such a mess that this man assumed she was homeless! In hindsight, Resena could understand. Her clothes were ragged, her hair undone, her skin dry and pasty from cleaning supplies and dirt, and to top it all off, here she sat on a bench asleep with five bags of clothing. Feeling even more embarrassed, Resena couldn't help but think,

"I would have probably thought that too."

Ashamed of her appearance, Resena's eyes began to water up. Had it been that long since she was well cared for? Her parents died when she was only 9yrs old. It had been a car accident that took their lives. Shortly after, she moved into her evil aunt and uncle's home and from that point on, the torture began. All of her trinkets, her clothing, and photos of her parents had been destroyed by her aunt and cousin. Necessities like food, water, and bathing came to her in scarce proportions. Yes, she too would have thought she was homeless. Wiping her eyes, Resena looked up at the now concerned man,

"That won't be necessary sir. I wasn't heading to the homeless shelter."

"So then where were you going?"

"To the dry cleaners on Bellum Ave."

The man could hardly believe what he was hearing. The dry cleaners! He didn't know where she was coming from, but he knew the dry cleaners was still at least two miles and to top it off she had over five bags with her! It was no wonder she fell asleep. The lady was exhausted!

"Ma'am, are you telling me you were going to walk to the shop? With these bags!? That's impossible!"

"No, it's my chores"

"Cho…."

Just then, the young man realized why this woman looked so ragged. She was a servant for a rich family. A family that was cruel enough to make this lady walk miles with bags of clothes. A family that would possibly punish this woman for not completing her task. At that moment, he knew what he had to do.

"Um, the cleaners are going to be open for another 30 minutes, they close at 5:30 on Wednesdays, why don't I give you a ride?"

Resena could hardly believe her ears. Had this man just offered to save her?! No, it was too good to be true. She had to ask just to make sure.

"Are you saying you will drive me to the cleaners shop?"

"Yeah. I'll take you. Look lady, that walk is brutal even without the bags and there is no way you would make it on time even with the extra 15 minutes. So, I don't mind taking you, but we better get a move on. My car is right over there."

Without hesitating any further, Resena quickly began grabbing her bags, the young man walked over and grabbed some bags. If he was some crazed killer at least she wouldn't be in that hellish house anymore so either way he would be an angel to her. The young man popped his trunk and placed the bags into the truck. His car was nice, whoever he was, he must've come from money. After placing all the bags into the trunk, the young man quickly went over to the passenger side of the car to open the door for Resena. Quickly, she hopped into the car, and he closed the door. As she began putting her seatbelt on, it dawned on her that this man was extremely nice.

"How long has it been since someone gave me a kind gesture?"

Thinking back, Resena realized no one had been this nice since her friend Ella. The other maids and servants were not exactly "mean" to her, but after the firing of Ella none of them wanted to interact with her. Resena had always understood their plights however, so she never held it against anyone. The fear of losing your livelihood can make a person react in all kinds of ways. Resena remained in thoughts about Ella until the car started. The sound made her jump a little, this caused the man to look over and chuckle.

"Have you ever been in a car?"

"Oh, yes. The sound just startled me a bit. My apologies."

It troubled the man how often this lady apologized. "She apologizes for everything." He thought as he began to drive off. "The people she works for must really be cruel." Sensing an awkward silence approaching, the young man decided to introduce himself.

"I'm Julius by the way. Julius Spencer. Figured I'd tell you my name, so it doesn't feel so awkward."

"Oh, yes, I supposed it could be a little awkward. Well, it's very nice to meet you, Mr. Spencer, my name is Resena."

"Just Julius, and is that it or do you have a last name?"

That question almost caught Resena off guard. How long had it been since she was able to say her last name. In the house, her aunt and uncle told her she was never allowed to say her full name as they didn't want people to know the daughter of such a prominent family was being treated like a servant, especially by her own family.

"So? Do you have a last name?"

"Oh! Yes! I'm sorry! It's Blackwell. Resena Blackwell."

"Blackwell? I know I've heard that name before." Julius thought hard regarding Resena's name. He knew he had heard that last name before, but he didn't know where. He thought about asking Resena, but he didn't want to be intrusive. For a moment it seemed as though she didn't want to say her last name at all. Finally, they arrived at the cleaner's shop.

"Are we already here?"

"Yup with about 20 minutes to spare!"

Resena could hardly believe her good fortune, thank goodness she met Mr. Spencer, she didn't know what would have happened if she wasn't able to complete this task!

"Mr. Spencer, thank you again so much for this!"

"Julius, and it was my pleasure. Come on, lets these bags in there before they close for the day."

"(Smiling), Okay!"

The Bigalow place was a popular cleaner's shop. Everyone within a 50-mile radius came to this shop. It was owned by Mrs. Femella and her husband, though most of the time it was her in front of the shop and Mr. Femella in the back. Mrs. Femella was short pretty woman with thick dark hair and thick arched eyebrows. She was as tough as they came but also very nurturing and kind. She had taken a liking to Resena and was always kind to her whenever she came to the shop. Though she didn't know her full story, she knew Resena was not being treated well in that house. A bell rang as Julius opened the door indicating a customer had arrived. Mrs. Femella immediately rushed from the back.

"Hello! Welcome to The Bigalow! Can I help you?"

"Hello Mrs. Femella!"

"Resena? Is that you?"

"Yes ma'am! It's me. How are you?"

"I'm doing great! How are you! I haven't seen you in a while! I guess those dreadful people haven't had any drycleaning needs."

Resena tensed up, she didn't want Julius to hear that last remark about her family. Looking over Resena's shoulder, she noticed Julius holding the bags.

"(Smiling), Ms. Resena! Who's this? He's handsome!"

Though she wasn't sure why, Mrs. Femella's comment made Resena blush a little.

"Um, this is Mr. Spencer. Mr. Spencer, this is Mrs. Femella, her and her husband own the shop."

"(Smiling), Julius. Nice to meet you Mrs. Femella."

"Nice to meet you too Julius. So how do you know our Resena?"

"Well…"

"Mr. Spencer saw me walking and was nice enough to offer me a ride."

Julius figured she wouldn't want anyone to know the full truth regarding how they met. He was glad she quickly answered the question as he couldn't think of what to say on the spur of the moment. He concluded Resena must've thought of what to say during the ride there.

"That was so nice of you! Thank you so much for helping her! It's awful having her carry such heavy bags to walk miles! Thank you so much Julius!"

Feeling a little awkward, Julius simply smiled and held his hand up as if to say no need for thanks. Resena's face began to get a little red, though she wasn't sure why. What was she so bashful for?

"Okay, so we've got five bags of clothes?"

"Yes ma'am"

"No worries my dear, I'll have these cleaned and pressed in three days! Here's your ticket."

As Resena took the cleaner's ticket and placed it in her pocket, Julius was concerned about the three days. "How is she supposed to carry these clothes back home? I wonder if she would be okay with giving me her number?" To his surprise, Julius had grown extremely concerned about this woman he had just met. Nevertheless, she would need assistance with these bags.

"Mrs. Femella, thank you again so much."

"No problem at all beautiful! You get home safely. Mr. Julius, thank you again for helping my girl here."

"It was my pleasure."

Waving goodbye, Resena and Julius headed out the door. As Julius went to open the passenger door, he noticed Resena walking past the shop.

"Resena?"

Confused, Resena turned towards Julius.

"Yes?"

"Where do think you're going?"

"(Confused) I'm sorry?"

"Where are you going? Get in please."

At that moment, Resena realized what he meant, Julius planned on taking her home as well.

"Mr. Spencer…"

"Julius"

"Mr. Spencer I can't let you take me home! That's entirely too much! You've gone out your way enough as it is!"

"Julius. Please. And Resena, I'm not going out of my way. I offered you! But I cannot let you walk all the way home. It's getting dark and wherever you live it's over two miles. So please get in."

Resena thought for a moment but then decided against it. She had already taken up too much of this man's time. Slowly, she turned around and began to walk.

"Even if you don't get into the car, I'm going to follow you. So wouldn't it be better to just get in?"

Puzzled; Resena turned around and stared at Julius. Why was he being so nice to her? Why was he so concerned? Was it because he knew she was tired? Whatever the reason, as soon as she thought of the words, Resena instantly felt fatigued. Her body felt as though it was due to fall apart at any moment. Her feet instantly began to ache, and her arms began to feel heavy. Julius was right. She wasn't going to be able to make the three-mile walk home. Not in this state.

As soon as she entered the car, Resena instantly felt relaxed. Maybe she was more tired than she thought? Or maybe she just did not want to do that 3-mile walk, whatever the case, she was just glad she had the ride.

"So, what's you address"

"33412 Darmond Way, Garden Estates."

Julius couldn't believe it; he knew this location. The Garden Estates owned by Delvoy Lanster?! This lady worked for the Lansters? Julius had heard stories about the Lansters and how they could be strict with servants, but he never expected them to be this cruel and strict. The thought of that concerned him. He had been contemplatingether to do business with Lanster Corp, but if this was how he treated his employees, Julius was reluctant to do so.

"So, you work for the Lansters?"

"(In a low voice), They're my aunt and uncle."

What compelled her to just say that? One of the rules from her aunt and uncle was to never disclose they were family. The Lansters didn't want the social backlash of the public to know the truth about how they abused Resena, so she was ordered never to reveal the truth. So why? Why had she just told him?

Suddenly Julius halted the car. Did he hear her correctly? Had she just said the Lansters were her aunt and uncle? There is no way that could be true! Julius had a hard time believing they would do this to a servant but to find out it was their own niece!

"Resena, are you telling the truth?"

Shocked, Resena felt a tinge of anger. "Why would I lie about something like that? I'd give anything for it not to be true." At that moment she chose to believe his disbelief was merely because no one could fathom family being so cruel and not simply because he thought her to be a liar.

"Yes Mr. Spencer it's very true, and I'll be in a lot of trouble if I don't get home soon so if you don't mind?"

Julius had been in such shock he didn't realize he'd stopped driving altogether.

"Oh, my apologies! Yes, let's get you home!"

Driving down the road, Julius' mind began to wonder. "How could her family treat her that way! Where are her parents? Should I ask her? No, there's no way she would tell me all of that!" For now, he had decided it was best to keep all questions to himself. The girl had already been through enough for one day. As he pulled up to the gates of the estate, Julius pulled out his communicator, a device used to make calls and handed it to Resena. Puzzled, Resena was unsure what he wanted her to do with it.

"Um, Mr.…Julius, I don't understand why you are handing me your communicator?"

"You have to come back to the cleaners in three days, right?"

"Y… Yes".

"Then you're going to need my help. There's no way you can carry five bags of clothes to or from this place. I'll come and pick you up."

Resena could hardly believe her ears! Did he just volunteer to drive her back to the cleaners?! WHY?! What was going on?

"(Holding up her hand), Mr. Spen… Julius, that won't be necessary!"

"Are we going to do this back and forth every time I offer assistance?"

"What?! No! I'm not trying to be difficult!"

"Good, then give me your number, that way I'll know when to pick you up. I have a feeling your family may have issues with my giving you a ride, so I'll make sure to park right here so they won't see me. Is that okay?"

It was true, if her aunt or cousin saw someone helping her, they would be extremely angry, and though they wouldn't show it in public; later on, they would punish her severely for embarrassing them. But that wasn't the only issue.

"Julius, I can't give you my communicator number."

"Why not?"

"Because I don't have a communicator number, I don't even have a communicator."

At that moment, Julius understood her reluctance and instantly felt bad for making her feel ashamed and embarrassed. This girl clearly was not being properly cared for and in that quick instance, he'd forced her to make that much obvious.

"2:30pm on Saturday."

"What?"

"That's the time I'll be out here. 2:30pm and if Mrs. Femella isn't ready, we'll just hang out in the area until she is. Okay"

"Okay."

Suddenly Resena started to panic in her mind. "Why did I agree so quickly?! What's wrong with me! If they find out!" Just then, as if he could hear her thoughts, Julius answered Resena's inner questions.

"There's no need to panic either, I'll make sure no one sees us."

As he finished his sentence, Julius looked over and smiled at Resena. "He's quite handsome." Was all Resena could think of at that moment. Shaking her head as if to clear her thoughts, Resena began to exit the car.

"Um, I'm going to head to the house now. Could you unlock your door please?"

"Oh, yes! I'm sorry! (Why am I hesitant to let her out?)."

Rather than simply unlock it, Julius got out of the car and opened Resena's door. As he helped her down, he couldn't help but notice how frail the girl was. He made a mental note to also take her somewhere to eat.

"Have a good night Resena."

Once her balance was stable, Resena turned around with the most interesting expression on her face… a smile. And to his surprise, Julius found it to be extremely beautiful.

"Good night, Julius! Thank you for everything!"

Suddenly, he found himself excited for Saturday.

As Resena walked up to the front door, she found herself excited for the first time in almost 9yrs. Someone wanted to help her and even spend time with her! Meeting Julius was one of the best experiences Resena had ever had! She wondered if there would be a way to find a better-looking dress than the ones she owned. Since her arrival, her aunt and cousin made it their duty to destroy all of the nice clothing and trinkets left to her by her parents. They relished making her dress in rags and old clothing. Maybe she could go to that thrift shop a few miles up with the little money she received from some of the servants. To eat on nights her aunt felt like lying about there being no more food, Resena started bartering chores in exchange for pay. She would take on some of the more difficult chores assigned to the servants as well as prep and cook some of the meals in exchange for money. The servants were all too happy to agree, especially because this allowed them to help Resena without breaking any rules, after all, there was no harm in paying her for her services. As she got closer to the entry way, Resena noticed a car in the driveway.

"Do we have a visitor?"

Puzzled, Resena concluded her aunt, and uncle must have a guest over. Finally, she made it to the front door. As she entered the home, Resena saw that her aunt, uncle, and an unknown gentleman were standing in the foyer. In unison, they all turned around and looked at Resena. Her aunt Larna, ever so calm, smiled at her niece as if she was a package that had finally been delivered.

That Saturday morning, Julius found himself looking up various restaurant locations in the areas close to the Bungalow. He figured it would be better to eat first and then pick up the dry cleaning. After that Wednesday with Resena, Julius decided to do a little more digging into the Lansters as well as the Blackwells. He'd assigned one of his closest friends, Raymon Pascal, with the task of finding out more information. Raymon was one of the best private investigators in all of Lenoria.

"Why the sudden interest in the Lansters?"

"I'm thinking about doing some business with them since Lanster Corp specializes in software technology."

"Oh, that makes sense especially for you! Okay, I find out everything I can, and the Blackwells?"

"No reason in particular, I'm just wondering where I know that name from."

Raymon looked at his friend with a puzzling look, nevertheless, he would find out everything he could regarding the two families.

As it grew closer to 2:30pm, Julius decided to settle on a barbeque spot. The restaurant's specialty was various meats and vegetables cooked on flame broiled stoves. He figured both he and Resena might enjoy cooking their own meats and veggies while further getting to know each other. Since that day, Julius found he wanted to know more and more about this interesting young lady. He had played that day over and over, especially that smile. That smile on her face as she said goodbye, that was what he wanted to see again more than anything. Finally, he would have the chance! As 2pm grew near, Julius decided it was time to head out. Today would be a good day. That was the least he could do for her, or so he thought.

Julius pulled up across the street from the entrance of the estate at 2:21pm, He'd parked his car far enough so that the cameras would not detect him. For an estate this big, the Lansters had top of the line security cameras all over and he didn't want to risk Resena getting into trouble. At exactly 2:30pm, Resena arrived outside of the gates of the estate. As she drew closer, Julius noticed something different about the woman. She looked… Nice. Her hair was pinned up into a bun style ponytail, her dress, much fancier than the one she wore Wednesday, was a pretty violet color with white ruffles underneath. For shoes, she wore black boots with lace and heels. Julius could not help but be admire how pretty the young woman was. He had thought there was an attraction to her back then, but it was difficult to appreciate under ragged clothing and frizzled hair. Before him now walked a lovely young woman; however, there was something else different about Resena today. As she walked up to the car, Julius noticed that although she wore better clothing and her hair was done, Resena herself looked different. Her face looked gloomy and sad, "Has something happened?" Julius thought. The last time he saw her she'd dawned such a beautiful smile, but today, today she looked as if she'd lost something dear. Though he was concerned, he wasn't sure if he should pry. Opening her door, Julius grabbed her hand to help her get into the car.

"Good afternoon Resena; you look lovely today. (I wonder if she… no that couldn't be it)"

Startled at being called pretty, Resena began to blush, it had been so long since someone referred to her as such words like pretty or beautiful. To top it off, she felt a tinge of guilt, for he was no longer the reason she was to wear such attire. Thinking back on that evening, Resena's stomach began to ache, how had everything gone so horribly wrong?

"Resena?"

"Oh, yes! Thank you very much for the compliment."

"(Something is wrong). Well, let's be on our way, I figured we'd grab a bite to eat before picking up the laundry. Would that be, okay?"

At that moment, Resena decided she would not fret about what is to come, today she was spending time with Julius, and she wasn't going to let the ruins of her future spoil this time. So, she pushed all of her worries and fears into the pits of her stomach and decided to be cheerful.

"(I won't worry about that today). Yes, that would be great!"

"(She appears to be losing up, that's a good thing I guess). Would you like to listen to some music?"

"Y…Yes, but I… you see I don't know that many artists to make any suggestions."

"(Smiling), Well that's okay, from what you've heard so far, what type of music do you like?"

At that moment, Resena had a quick memory of when she used to dance and the music that would play. Such beautiful classical music that sounded like petals in the sky. She could still remember how she felt with each movement as she danced; the feeling her mother and father would get as they watched; the joy she felt knowing she made them proud. What she would give to have that feeling again.

"Do you have any classical or contemporary music?"

"Really? You like that type of music?"

"If that's too much!"

"No, no! I actually love that type of music! I'm just shocked you like it as well is all. (Smiling), We have something in common"

"(Blushing), Oh…"

Resena could feel her cheeks starting to burn, "something in common? Me and him?" The thought of that gave her feelings she didn't quite understand. Why had she met this man? Especially considering where her life was soon headed. Why did she have to meet this man now. As they continued to drive, Julius began playing a beautiful melody, the sound was so radiant it made Resena feel as if she could fly.

"(Quietly), How beautiful."

Watching her slowly bob her head with her eyes closed and a slight smile on her lips, Julius knew he'd chosen the right song to play as they rode into the city. As the song came to an end, Resena's eyes slowly opened,

"That was so beautiful."

"Would you like to hear more?"

"Yes!"

Seeing her excitement made Julius smile. More importantly, it looked like whatever had been bothering her earlier went away.

"Where will be we eating today?"

"Oh, that's right, I hadn't told you yet. We're going to a restaurant called 'The Mango Bistro'. They specialize in flame grilled meats and vegetables. Have you ever been?"

"No, I haven't. I haven't been to a restaurant since I moved in with my aunt and uncle."

He had been trying to avoid this question as he did not want to upset her, but Julius was curious.

"Um, Resena, if you don't mind my asking, where are your parents?"

Resena knew this question would come soon, it was only a matter of time before he would wonder where her parents were. The question, however, still managed to catch her off guard. Resena could feel her eyes begin to swell, she began to think of something, anything that would stop her from crying. Just then, Julius spoke…

"I'm sorry. If it's too difficult to speak on, disregard my question. I apologize for upsetting you."

At that moment, even without her saying, Julius knew what happened to her parents.

"It was a car accident."

"Huh?"

"My parents. They were in a car accident; it claimed their lives when I was 9yrs old."

"And then you moved in with the Lansters?"

"Yes."

"I see."

It all became clear to Julius; he could see it as if he were there. Resena's parents passing, her being ripped from the life she always had, and then being forced to live with people who despised her. Julius didn't want to continue to upset her as he could see she was on the brink of crying.

"I understand now Resena, you don't have to explain any further. I'm sorry for making you remember something so painful."

"No, it's okay. I'm glad I told you. I haven't been able to talk about my parents for so long, it felt good finally being able too."

If it weren't for her smiling, Julius would have doubted her being fine, still, he'd told himself it would be safe to change the subject for now to ensure her mood would not change.

"Alright, we're here."

As they pulled into the parking lot, Julius could see Resena's eyes filled with excitement. How long had it been since she went to a restaurant, and now, she was on her way to eating good food with Julius. Today would be a great day if even for a while.

"Shall we?"

Smiling down at her, Julius took Resena by the hand as they walked into the restaurant. Resena could feel her hand and cheeks heating up. "Won't people think we're a couple?" It dawned on her, she'd never bothered to ask if Julius was in a relationship with anyone, though she could hardly see how not. Afterall, he was nice, intelligent, and very handsome. Yes, any woman would be lucky to have him. "I would be…." Suddenly, Resena felt a tinge of sadness. There was no way she would ever be able to be with someone like him. Her aunt had seen to that.

"Welcome to the Mango Bistro, how may I help you?"

Hearing the hostess' voice snapped Resena out of her deep and sadden thoughts. She won't worry about any of that, not today. Today she would simply enjoy herself and worry about the future later.

"I have a table reservation for two under the name Spencer."

"Oh yes Mr. Spencer! And you requested the flame table, correct?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Perfect! Right this way!"

As the hostess led them to their table, Resena took a moment to look around. The Mango Bistro was lovely, each wall consisted of beautiful artwork featuring music and dance. It was at that moment that Resena concluded that Julius must love music. The tables were all beautiful sand wood with flower designs carved into them with matching chairs and benches. Towards the back was where their table would be. These tables were a little different, the design was the same however, in the middle of these tables, lay a flame grill. Resena also noticed these tables were in a more intimate location, leaving her and Julius unseen. She wasn't sure why, but she could feel her cheeks heat up once again at the thought of this. Still, she found herself excited to not only cook but try the food as well!

"Alright, this is your table! Your waitress will be over here soon to take your orders! Please enjoy!"

"(Both), Thank you!"

"So, liking everything so far?"

"Yes! It's incredibly beautiful here! Thank you!"

"It's my pleasure. I'm glad I got to do this with you. So, shall we take a look at the menus and see what to order."

"Yes. Um, have you ever eaten here before?"

"I have. The food is incredibly good! Do you mind if I make a suggestion?"

"Please. I have no idea what I'm looking at."

"(Smiling). So, we're going to be cooking the meat, each kind comes with a variety of sides. One of my favorites is the mango glazed steak."

"That sounds delicious!"

"Oh, it is. They use a sweet, flavored mango seasoning and marinate and it comes with rice, fruits, and variety of vegetables with a sweet dipping sauce."

As Julius continued to explain the menu, Resena could feel her stomach begin to grumble, she hadn't eaten since the day before, after what happened on Wednesday, she found her appetite had disappeared, but now it seemed to be back with vengeance. Luckily, the waitress finally appeared.

"Hi, my name is Caralyn and I'll be your waitress for today. Can I start you two off with drinks?"

"Yes, we'll have a bottle of your sweet-reed as well as two waters."

"Alright, I'll be right back with your drinks, and you'll have a little more time on your menus."

"What's sweet-reed?"

"It's a red wine; it actually goes good with red meats."

"Oh."

Though she'd served it on many occasions, this would be Resena's first time trying wine. She was curious how it tasted.

"Have you ever had wine before?"

"No. I've never had the chance to try it."

"It's very good but it is alcohol, we'll drink it in slow moderation to avoid intoxication."

"Alright! Here is your bottle of sweet-reed and two waters, would you like me to open the bottle for you?

"No that will be quite all right. We're also ready to order."

"Perfect! What will you be having today?"

"We're going to have two orders of the mango glazed steak."

"Excellent choice! Now that comes with rice, a variety of fruits that can also be grilled, and mixed vegetables. Was there anything else I can get you?"

"That will be all for now, but I would like to hold on to one of the menus."

"No problem! I'll be right back with your cuts of steak."

"(Both), Thank you."

As they waited for their food, Julius noticed Resena looked sad. He caught that same look of grimace while in the car. He wondered if there was another place she'd rather have gone instead of here though he doubted it. No, something was definitely bothering her. She had looked this way when he first picked her up.

"Resena, forgive me if I'm prying but is there something troubling you?"

The question had caught her completely off guard! Had she been that transparent? She tried her hardest to put on a brave face and enjoy her day. She didn't want to ruin these moments, but every time she thought about it, she felt her heart get heavy. Yes, something was wrong, something horrible had happened, and there was nothing she could do about it….

That Wednesday evening, as Resena walked up to the door, she saw there was a car in the driveway. Though she'd never seen it before, she'd concluded whoever the guest was had to be there for one of them. As she entered the foyer, she could see her aunt and uncle standing next to a gentleman she had never seen before, however, as she walked into the room, each of them looked directly at her as if they had been waiting for her to arrive.

"Resena, there you are. You've been gone for a quite a while."

"My apologies ma'am, the cleaners were very busy today."

"No worries."

Though she wasn't sure why, the smile on her aunt's face made Resena extremely uncomfortable. She decided it would be best for her to go to her room.

"Thank you, if you'll excuse m…"

"Wait a minute."

Larna held a finger up commanding Resena to stop.

"I want to introduce you to someone. Resena, this is Erick Steelwater."

Though Resena did not move in social circles, she was aware of who the Steelwaters were, she also knew who Erick, their eldest son, was and the reputation that followed. Amongst the maids and servants and even at the cleaner's, rumors of Erick Steelwater spread far and wide. Although he was the son of a marquess, Erick had already been through three fiancés, each claiming allegations of physical and sexual abuse. His latest fiancé, a woman named Deena Laureen was the third to call off their engagement. Though it had not been confirmed, the rumor around town was that Erick beat her so badly she had to be hospitalized. Her father a well-respected businessman, argued for the young man to be arrested immediately. However, due to the statuses of both Erick and his father, no such incident occurred. Instead, according to the rumors, a settlement had been paid out on Erick's behalf in order to keep the girl and her family from going public.

Why had he been here this evening? Surely Larna would never agree to her precious Marsell marrying such a horrid man with that dreaded reputation; and why was it so important for Resena to meet him? As Resena's mind spun with questions, a terrible feeling crept into her stomach like a pitted knot.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Steelwater."

His grin was mischievous as if he were thinking of something dark. Resena felt uneased as he walked toward her. Taking a step back to make sure he did not get too close to her, Resena's reaction was due to fear. What was going on? Why were they all here? Walking closer to her, Erick Steelwater stared at her, looking up and then down, and then up again. Smiling, his words finally formed.

"She's a bit bonier than expected, but she will do, oh, she will definitely do."

What?! What had he meant? What did that mean? "She'll definitely do?" What was going on? Resena suddenly felt lightheaded, the knot in her stomach was growing bigger like a rock trying to burst. The room began to spin, what exactly were they all talking about before she arrived home! Resena could see her aunt smiling that devilish grin as she approached Erick.

"Well, that's wonderful! My husband and I are delighted to hear that, Aren't we dear?!"

"Indeed! The combining of both the Lanster and Steelwater households will serve as a great benefit indeed!"

WHAT! What had he meant by that?! How were the houses combining? What was going on! Deep down, Resena knew the answer, she'd known it from the moment her aunt introduced her, she'd known it from the moment she'd walked through the door. They had finally done it. Resena had finally been married off. Since she was 14, Larna made it no secret that she could not wait to marry her off and be rid of her. She also knew that was the only way the Lansters would receive compensation for raising her. Resena's 18th birthday was in less than three weeks and Larna could not wait to sell her off. But why? Why did it have to been Erick Steelwater? Had she hated her niece that much? Resena never quite understood why her aunt despised her, she'd concluded it had to do with whatever issues she had with her mother, but still, Erick Steelwater was not a man to wish even onto your greatest enemy. Just then, Marsell walked into the foyer grinning from ear to ear.

"Well, this calls for a celebration! My darling little cousin is getting married and to a Steelwater no less! Why, you must feel like the luckiest girl in the world! I'm so jealous."

"Well, I think this calls for some champagne."

Just then, Larna called Diana, her head caretaker, into the room.

"Yes ma'am, how can I be of service?"

"Diana could you please bring a bottle of our finest champagne into the dining room? We're going to celebrate the engagement of my niece to Lord Erick Steelwater!"

For a split second, Diana's face looked sad. Even she was aware of the reputation that followed Lord Steelwater.

"Uh, yes my lady, right away."

As she turned to leave, Diana looked over at Resena who by now looked as if the wind had been knocked out of her as if to say she was sorry, sorry that her aunt loathed her so much that she would marry her off to horrid man like Erick Steelwater. However, she knew such a statement would cost her so instead, she simply left to retrieve the champagne.

"I'm sorry young miss; sorry I was such a coward and never spoke up for you or tried to help you even if in the slightest way. I wasn't strong like Ella, none of us were."

As Diana made her way to the wine cellar, Delvoy instructed everyone to the dining area, everyone began to move except Resena, instead, she stood in that same spot as if her feet were made of stone. She could feel her eyes begin to swell as they filled with water, her knees felt weak as if they would buckle at any moment. "Why? Why did this happen? What had I done in my life to these people to deserve this? Anything would have been better than marrying him including death, so why? Why not just kill me?" Resena's mind was spiraling so much that she hadn't noticed her aunt walking up to her. In an instant, Larna grabbed Resena by the wrist and spun her around.

In a low and menacing voice, she whispered, "I would suggest you get yourself together now girl! You will not embarrass us, or I promise, I'll make sure the rest of the days you spend in this house be filled with misery beyond anything you could imagine."

Larna was practically seething as she threatened Resena, she planned everything and had come too far for this little runt to ruin it! Finally, she would get what she deserved and be rid of the runt once and for all! Resena looked at her aunt in terror knowing she meant every word. On command, Resena turned around and headed to the dining area. Once she arrived, she saw her uncle and new fiancé engaging in a conversation regarding trade. Just then, it all became clear to her, she realized why her aunt and uncle wanted her to marry this wretched man, his father had a trading company and Delvoy looked to expand his company. "So that's it, I'm just a political pawn." Resena finally understood. Just then, Erick looked in her direction, although he was handsome, the smile on his face resembled that of a devil. As he made his way towards Resena she caught her aunt glaring at her as if to say, "You better behave runt!" Resena stood in place waiting for her new fiancé to approach.

"You know, I've been looking at you. You're quite pretty, though a little bit of weight would serve you well, and you'll need some new clothing. My fiancé can't been in such rags even if she is the servant."

So, he was aware! Larna must've told him the entire truth regarding Resena including the part about her parents' will. That must be why he was so eager to marry her despite living as a servant. In reality, Resena was also from nobility.

"But you know, (he continued), what I most look forward to is the faces you make when in fear. Oh yes, you'll most certainly do. I can smell the fear seeping through your pours, YES! YES! You're the one that will please me most!"

Shock and horror poured through Resena's entire body as he spoke, she flinched as he touched her hair with his fingertips. He was a monster! The rumors were indeed true and now he was her fiancé, another victim of his abuse no doubt. Why, why had this happened?! The next day, Erick Steelwater had clothing sent over to the Lansters for Resena, he insisted she get into the habit of wearing particular clothes and shoes even if she were performing simple chores. Her aunt immediately made her change into the clothing, ordering her to abide by her new fiancé's wishes and wear the clothing including that Saturday when she left for the dry cleaners.

Now, as Resena sat across from Julius, all she could think about was how her life would be over after this day ended. Smiling back at Julius, she responded to his question,

"No, nothing is wrong. I'm sorry if I gave that impression."

No, she would not let what's to come ruin today. Today she was with Julius, she was about to eat great food, and she would enjoy every minute of this moment until it came to an end.

Though he suspected she was not being truthful, Julius decided not to pry any further, whatever was bothering her, she was not yet ready to discuss it.

"(Smiling), No apologies needed. I just want you to enjoy yourself, so if there is anything else you would like to do today, don't hesitate to let me know."

"Something else?"

Resena hadn't thought about anything else to do. She knew her time was limited even with saying the cleaners were busy, still, if there was a way to stay with him just a bit longer…. That's it!

"Um, by any chance could we go to the park?"

"The park? Are you referring to Rose Dragon Park?"

"Yes!"

Rose Dragon Park was a park named for its unique rose tree shaped in the form of a dragon. It was also the last place she and her parents visited before their deaths. Resena had not been there since, and she longed to revisit someday.

"Absolutely! We can go there and have ice cream if that's okay?"

"Yes, that would be lovely!"

"Then it's settled."

Just then, the waitress reappeared with large trays of food, one tray contained slices of steak marinated in the pineapple sauce, even uncooked Resena could smell how good it was! Excitement gleamed in her eyes as the waitress placed the food onto the table.

"Alright! Have you two been here before?"

"I have yes, this is her first time."

"Okay great! So, you already know what to do! The knobs are right here on the side, so you can adjust your flames as needed! The veggies are cooked but you can add them to the flame grill as well, just try not to overcook them. And of course, you can also add your fruits. All right! You guys enjoy and please let me know if you need anything!"

"(Both), Thank you!"

Once the waitress left, Julius immediately started cooking the steak, he'd also shown Resena how to cook it on the flame grill. Everything smelled so delicious! Through conversation as the meat cooked, Resena was able to learn quite a bit about Julius, as it turns out, she was right about his love for music, he told her he played a number of instruments including the piano and violin. He was also the oldest of four children and his parents' only son. Julius Spencer was also a noble; his father, Jamison Spencer, was once of high command in the imperial army. He later started a technology company that specialized in building computers and cameras mainly for the military and his imperial highness. Resena was shocked! She had no idea she had befriended such a prominent man! In return, Resena told him of her childhood as well as her parents and where she came from.

"So that's it! I knew I'd heard the name 'Blackwell' before. Your dad was highly respected in the imperial capital as a doctor and your mother was greatly loved. I've heard many refer to her as the 'Golden Angel.' Wow! To think I've become friends with the daughter of legends."

Hearing that statement made Resena blush, it had been so long since she heard someone speak so highly of her parents.

"Alright, the meat is all finished, let's give it a try!"

Resena could hardly contain her excitement! She quickly placed her hands together and said a quick grace before grabbing her fork and taking a bite of the steak. Her face instantly lit up with glee!! It was delicious! The meat was so tender and seasoned well! Julius cooked it to perfection! Was there anything this man could not do? As Resena ate her food, she began to think, this must be what heaven feels like! The sweet savory taste mixed with the rice, fruit, and vegetables! Yes, this was most certainly heaven!

"Oh my gosh!! It's so delicious!" Resena gushed as she clambered down on her food.

"I'm glad you're enjoying it! Eat as much as you like." Julius was especially happy Resena loved the food. He'd made it a mental note that he would try and take her out to eat as much as he could. She seemed so malnourished, so it pleased him to see her eat.

After they finished eating, Resena then tried the wine, Julius was correct, it did go well with the beef. It left a sweet and savory taste that lingers just longer enough to complement the meal.

"That was divine. I'm so stuffed, I don't think I've ever eaten that much before." Resena sat at the table completely satisfied. Her belly was so full she could skip eating the entire week and would still be okay. This was what true happiness felt like.

"Shall we head out, or can't you move?" Julius joked as he watched Resena sit relaxed.

"Oh no! I'm fine!"

"(Laughing), Then we'll be on our way."

Julius paid their lunch tab and left a hefty tip for the waitress. She couldn't quite tell, but it looked as if he thanked her for providing a wonderful experience. The waitress blushed and replied with what looked to be "It was my pleasure." Soon after leaving, they headed to the cleaners to pick up the clothing, Mrs. Femella was out today so they were in and out of the shop. After placing the clothing into the trunk, they headed to the park.

"Oh wow, it's just like I remember it." Resena stood at the entrance of Rose Dragon Park, it was beautiful. Throughout the park there were lovely beds of roses in an assortment of colors, there were fountains that sprouted different colors of water. The trees were filled with branches full of rose leaves. The pathways were beautiful ground stones. Everything looked as perfect as it did the first time her parents brought her here.

"Care to take a walk with me?" Julius looked down at Resena, she nodded with glee as he took her hand and began to walk.

"Julius, Thank you so much for today. This means more to me than you will ever know." And it did. This day would live on in her memories for days to come.

As they continued to walk, Julius spotted an ice cream cart. The walk had most certainly worn down the food they enjoyed from earlier.

"Would you like to get to some ice cream?" Julius pointed to the cart across the way.

"Oh yes please!" Many didn't know this, but Resena had a bit of a sweet tooth and ice cream was one of her favorites. It had been so long since she could enjoy some, the weather was simply perfect for it.

After purchasing two vanilla cones, Julius found a park bench next to the rainbow water fountain. There they took their seats and began to enjoy their ice cream treat.

"I was thinking, maybe next time we could visit this little bistro that specializes in crepes, I hear they have a great…" Just then, as Julius began speaking future plans, he noticed something that almost frightened him. Resena had begun crying long hard tears! What had happened in that quick instant to make her begin to cry? Ice cream cone still in hand, Resena just sat there and cried.

Julius began to panic! He didn't know what was wrong or what had happened. Her crying wasn't loud sobs, so the public was unaware, but her crying was in fact strong. Heavy flows of tears streamed down her face. In an instant, Julius took the cone out of her hand and tossed it into the trash can, he then grabbed Resena in his arms and hugged her tightly.

"Resena, what's wrong? Please tell me! (I knew something was wrong with her! What's happened? Did that family do something to her?). Julius continued to hug Resena as she continued to cry. He needed to know what was troubling her so that he could try and fix it. "Resena, please, Tell me what's troubling you."

Whispering, Resena finally said,

"There won't be a next time. Because I am getting married."

What! Married?! To whom? When? Had she always been engaged? No, that's impossible! There's no way she was engaged the day he met her, so when? When had she gotten engaged.

"Resena, when did you get engaged?"

"Wednesday evening, after you brought me home from the cleaners."

Julius could hardly believe his ears. It happened that quickly! And what of this fiancé? Why did the idea of marrying him pain her so? Julius could feel himself getting angry, though he wasn't sure if he was angry because she was sad, or angry because she was engaged. That was something he would figure out later, right now, he needed as much information as he could on this so-called fiancé.

"Resena, tell me, who is it that you're now engaged too?"

"Lord Erick Steelwater." Resena managed to explain what happened through her tears, Julius could hardly believe it. That family of hers decided to marry her off to Steelwater! The idea of it made Julius angry in a way he'd never felt before.

Why would they do this? Did the aunt truly hate the girl that much! Everyone knew about Erick Steelwater and how he abused his fiancés and lovers. Though his father paid off every victim, everyone knew of his wretched son. Erick wasn't just abusive, he was sadistic. He took immense pleasure in torturing and abusing his women, stories of cigarette burn marks, battered bodies, and rape all trailed him. His father, however, was desperate for an heir, so each time a fiancé left, he would soon put his son back onto the market. And although his reputation was known, families still took chances in hopes their daughters would marry into the Steelwater clan. Most of the time he would choose women of lowered statuses figuring they and their families would more desperate. This was the first time he had been engaged to another noble.

"So, you see, I won't be able to have any more days like this with you. I'll be leaving to live on his estate after my 18th birthday."

"I see." It was so clear now, why she'd looked so gloomy when he first picked her up, and why she had moments throughout the day when she seemed like she wanted to cry. She was to be betrothed to a monster. "I won't allow it! I won't allow it! There must be a way to get her out of this engagement!"

As they drove back to Resena's, Julius' mind was racing. He knew what he had to do but the question was how? How would he save her? To break off an engagement, the head of the family would have to agree. How would he do that? He knew he would need assistance with this so he would be calling his friend Raymon for help. He wouldn't rest until he freed her from this arrangement! As he pulled up to her estate Julius took a long look at Resena, when he first looked at her, he thought there was something attractive about her, but now looking at her in these clothes and with her hair neatly done, able to see her full face, she was beautiful. She was also sweet, kindhearted, and above all brave. There was no way he was going to let them ruin her any more than they already had. He would be the one to save her.

Mrs. Femella left a gift for Resena, saddened that she had to constantly walk; she purchased a cart for Resena to help carry her bags. This pleased Julius, the way he was feeling right now, he'd almost contemplated storming straight through the front door and giving that entire family a piece of his mind; however, he knew doing something like this would only make matters worse for Resena. No, he would have to do this the right way. After placing the final bag into her cart, Julius turned to face Resena.

"Resena, I know you won't believe me now, after everything you've been through, I can understand. But please, try to believe me when I say I will free you from this! You have my word!"

At that moment, Resena was stunned, she didn't quite know what to say. Free her how? And why? Why did he care so much about her? From the moment she met him, it seemed like he was always saving her. Always finding a way. Perhaps this time would not be any different, so this she simply responded…

"I believe you."

Julius stayed parked across the street until Resena was in the house, he then pulled out his communicator to call Raymon.

"Yo, this is Raymon."

"It's Julius."

"Hey what's up. I got some information on that family, I can brin…."

"I need you to come over tonight. I need help with something asap! It's an emergency!"

"On the way now, see you soon."

That was what Julius appreciated about Raymon, whenever he needed him, he was always there. His help would be much needed tonight, he had to figure out how to save her.

Raymon arrived at the Spencer estate around 7:30pm. After he arrived, Julius wasted no time in filling him in on what was happening. Raymon could hardly believe his ears! Not only had his friend of many years taken interest in a woman, but he was also now trying to bust up her engagement. Raymon couldn't help but laugh.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! You don't have to look at me like that! I didn't mean to laugh! This is just very amusing to me. I mean you must admit, in the 21 years that I've known you, I've never seen you take an interest in anyone despite your parents constantly trying to marry you off."

It was true, up until now, Julius had never shown much interest in anyone, it's not that he was against marriage as he knew one day he would have to produce an heir, but Julius was more focused on building things. Regardless, this time was obviously different, and he had no time to waste.

"So, what options does she have?"

"Honestly, there isn't anything 'she' can do at all. Once the head sets up an engagement that's pretty much it. The only way to end things would be if the head decided to end the engagement and based off what you've told me, even if he does abuse her, it doesn't seem like they would care.

Julius hated hearing this. He knew it was practically a long shot, but he still held out hope that something could be done.

"So, there's really nothing I can do to help her?"

"Well, I didn't say that."

"You just said there was nothing I could do!"

"No, I said there was nothing SHE could do. I never mentioned anything about you."

"Got dammit Raymon! Stop talking in circles!"

"Hey! Relax! Look there is one way to possibly get her out of this engagement."

"Well? Spit it out!"

"YOU could marry her."

What! Marry her?! That thought didn't even remotely cross Julius' mind. "Me, married? And to Resena? I barely know her. Would I even be ready for that?" Still, Raymon was right, that would probably be the only way to save her. Based on what he learned about Delvoy Lanster from Raymon, although he was a crude man, his business was the most important thing. He probably liked the idea of her marrying Steelwater because of his father's trading company. I wonder how he would feel about partnering with the largest tech company on the continent. Spencer's Techware had already made its way to the western continent. Their high-tech tablets, cameras, communicators, and computers were a large commodity across the globe, there's no question he would want to expand his software business with Spencer. The question was whether he cared about Resena enough to pledge the rest pf his life to her. "Marry her. Hmm." The idea didn't seem that bad. And if it saved her from that terrible family, why not?

"Raymon, I need a contract drafted up."

"You got it."

Monday morning came and Delvoy was busy preparing, he'd just received a call the night prior from his lawyer stating that Julius Spencer wanted to meet at noon! Julius Spencer! Of all the people, the head of Spencer Techware wanted to meet! Delvoy could hardly contain himself!

"Do you know what this could do for my company! Imagine if Spencer started using my software.'

"It's a wonder he never reached out before."

"That's because they had business with an overseas software company. Maybe they want to have something directly at home too. Whatever the case, this is more than good news!"

Delvoy was busy directing the maids and servants, everything had to be perfect. He instructed the chefs to make a top-of-the-line lunch, nothing but the best for Spencer. Larna also saw this as an opportunity, an opportunity to introduce Spencer to her darling Marsell. It was no secret he was not currently engaged, and rumor had it he was very handsome. Yes! This would be the perfect fit for her darling daughter, and yet another way to one up that runt. "Imagine, my daughter, marrying Julius Spencer, while that runt is getting beat by Steelwater." The thought was just too good to be true!

"I want you to look your absolute best! Spencer will be here by noon. I want you to impress him as much as you can!"

"Not to worry mother, I'll have him eating out of the palm of my hand before the day is through."

"That's my girl. And this will be one more thing to hang over that wretched cousin of yours."

"Well, that is the bonus."

As she was walking to the kitchen to replace the mats, Resena could hear her aunt and cousin engaging in a laugh. "What were they so happy about?" It didn't matter; it's not like it would involve her anyway. The entire house had actually been acting strange, was something going on? Maybe someone was coming over. She dreaded the thought of it being Steelwater, but that couldn't be, Larna would have wasted no timing rubbing it in. So, what was going on?

"You, girl. Come here."

"Yes ma'am."

"Make sure you wear one of the dresses your fiancé picked out, I don't want you looking like trash when our guest arrives. You will not embarrass us in front of Julius Spencer."

WHAT! Resena could hardly believe her ears! Julius? Was coming here? Why?

"Um, ma'am, did you say Julius Spencer?"

"Yes! So, make sure you look half decent, Delvoy would like to make a good impression."

What was going on! Resena was so confused! Still, now she understood the frenzy, of course Delvoy would vie for his business, and Larna, she probably wanted to introduce Marsell. Marsell! Suddenly a pit knotted in her stomach, the thought was him marrying Marsell arose feelings in Resena she had never felt before. Is that why he was coming? What about him promising to save her? No. No. No. No! "I won't lose my faith in him! I promised to believe in him." At that moment, Resena decided to do as her aunt requested. She would look decent to Julius.

Julius arrived at the Lansters' estate at exactly noon. As he stepped out of his car, he noticed the servants lined up to greet him. "Pulling out all the stops huh Lanster?" He thought as he walked up to the front door.

"Good afternoon Mr. Spencer. My name is Diana, I'm the head caretaker for the Lanster Estate, welcome to our home."

"It's a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for the warm welcome."

"It's our pleasure. Right this way please."

Julius followed Diana into the foyer, he had to admit, the Lansters' mansion was beautiful, everything was lined up to the smallest detail. All the servants were neat and clean, with the warmest of greetings. Yes, they certainly knew how to put on a show. But Julius wasn't fooled, he knew the truth. He was there for one reason, and one reason only. To save Resena.

"Mr. Spencer, welcome! Welcome to my home! I'm Delvoy Lanster and it's a pleasure to finally meet you."

"The pleasure is all mine. Thank you for having me, especially on such short notice."

"It's no trouble at all. I'm glad we finally had the chance to meet! Let me introduce you to my lovely wife, this is Larna and my beautiful daughter Marsell."

"It's a pleasure to meet you ladies. Thank you for your hospitality."

Larna and Marsell could hardly believe their eyes, Julius Spencer was absolutely beautiful! Yes, he would be the one to marry Marsell, neither she nor Larna would take no for an answer!

"Please, follow me this way into my study hall."

Julius followed Delvoy, and as he looked around the house, he noticed he couldn't find her. Where was Resena? He wanted, no, NEEDED to see her. Since Saturday when they departed, he found himself missing her. He needed to see her and soon. He would have to make his intentions clear quickly.

"Please, have a seat."

"Thank you. As I stated before, I appreciate your meeting me especially on such short notice, so I don't want to take too much of your time. I'll get right into why I'm here today."

"Absolutely! Please, continue…"

"Mr. Lanster, I'm just going to get straight to the point. I'm interested in marrying your niece."

Delvoy could hardly believe his ears. Resena? She was the reason he arranged this meeting. But why? How did he even know about her? For the past nine years, they had all but kept her locked away; she wasn't allowed to speak to anyone; and she wasn't allowed to divulge her full name, so why? Why did he of all people want to marry her?

"Umm, forgive me Mr. Spencer, but are you sure you mean Resena?"

"Yes, that's exactly what I mean. Is there a problem?"

"No! No, there's no problem, except…"

"Yes?"

"Well, you see, she's already engaged. To Lord Steelwater."

"Erick?"

"Yes sir. As of last Wednesday, she's set to move into his estate after her 18th birthday."

"So, she's not officially engaged yet. As in it has not been released to the public?"

"Well, no I supposed not."

"Good, then cancel it."

"Mr. Spencer I…"

"Mr. Lanster, let me be clear, the reason I'm here today is for Resena. I would like to marry her. Now I understand you have been raising her since the passing of her parents so as her acting father I am more than willing to pay a dowry I'm sure you will appreciate. You company specializes in software, correct?"

"Uh, yes, we do."

"Good. My company is a tech company. I usually deal with a software company overseas in the northern continent but we're expanding our business to the west and I'm looking to add another software company to make sure I don't overload my current. It was my understanding you're actually interested in expanding to the west. Correct?"

"Yes! We are looking to get our software over to the western continent."

"Then this should be no problem. With my company you'll be able to expand."

Delvoy wasn't sure what to do. He had just promised that girl to the Steelwaters, but how could he turn down an opportunity like this! Sitting in front of him was everything he dreamed of. No, it would have to be done. Steelwater would understand, it's not like he hasn't experienced a broken engagement before. Though he knew Larna would not be pleased, Delvoy couldn't let this opportunity slip through his fingers.

"Mr. Spencer, we have a deal!"

"Very good! I'll have my lawyers draw up the contracts regarding our business deal. Now, may I see Resena?"

"Perfect! Thank you for this opportunity! Yes, I'll have her brought down immediately!"

As both gentlemen left the study, Julius couldn't help but feel heroic! He's done it! He'd saved Resena! And it was easier than expected, it looks like Raymon's intel proved to be accurate as usual. Lanster was desperate to break into the western continent, so he knew there was no way he would miss an opportunity like this. As they entered the foyer Marsell and Larna came out of the dining room.

"Oh Larna, where is Resena?"

"Resena? I'm not sure. (Why in the hell is he requesting for her?) Did you need her for some reason?"

"Oh yes actually…"

"Actually Mrs. Lanster, I requested her, would it alright if she came to the foyer?"

Confused, Larna shot a quick glance at her husband, what was going on? Why the sudden interest in that runt, But Julius wasn't going to miss an opportunity to see egg on both the aunt and cousin's face. He would enjoy this as he was sure they would be furious about the new engagement.

"Absolutely Mr. Spencer. Diana.'

"Yes ma'am."

"Please bring my niece to the foyer, we have a guest that would like to meet her."

"Right away my lady."

Standing near the steps, Marsell was seething. "What did he want with her!!! What was going on!" To make matters worse, it appeared Julius Spencer did not have the slightest interest in Marsell. All those years of hearing boys and men alike fawn over her and this man hadn't looked her way once but he's requested Resena! Something was wrong!

"My lady, Ms. Resena."

After hearing Ms. Diana announce her arrival, Julius slowly turned around, there she was. Resena wore a peached colored dress with beige ruffles underneath. The dress was formed in all the right places. You could see her perfect hourglass figure; her hair was pinned up into a curly ponytail with curls dangling towards her face. He hadn't noticed before, but she actually had freckles. Her complexion was now a beautiful olive, and she looked radiant, no doubt due to her finally having a healthy meal. Her eyes, once a dull green, now were a beautiful emerald. Resena was absolutely breathtaking. Did a day of vitamin D and good eating really make that much of a difference? Well, this was just the beginning, from this point on, Julius would make sure she was well taken care of every day.

"Ma'am, did you need me?"

"No, your…"

"Actually, I requested you."

She knew she recognized the voice, but her heart still fluttered as if to say it was too good to be true. He was here! Standing before her was Julius, when they finally locked their eyes, he had this big smile on his face. Looking like a dashing knight, he'd come to save her!

"Hello Resena."

"Mr. Spencer." Resena knew it would seem suspicious if she acted too familiar with Julius, so she curtsied to be polite, though she was curious. Why was he here?

"Am I to understand you requested for me?"

"(Smiling), Yes, as a matter of fact I did."

"May I know why?"

"Of course, I'm here to ask for your hand in marriage."

"I'm sorry, but what did you just say?!" Resena stood in shock! Surely, she did not hear him correctly. Was this some kind of a joke!

Taking a step forward, Julius now stood directly in front of her. He would make sure she understood exactly what he was saying. Pulling a small blue box out of his pocket, Julius kneeled on one knee and opened it. There lay a beautiful diamond ring, the stone, shaped like a rose, had tiny diamonds crusted around it on a beautiful platinum band. Holding the ring up to Resena, he asked her directly.

"Resena Marie Blackwell, will you marry me?"
