Poliwag Vs Veluza

As the mysterious Pokémon closed the distance, Poliwag felt a wave of regret. If only it hadn't overslept and had just left with Swampert earlier, it wouldn't have ended up being ambushed by this outsider.

Getting bitten by those rows of razor-sharp teeth… that had to hurt.

Poliwag's stamina was running low, and its movements slowed. The mysterious fish Pokémon, which had been watching it intently, flickered with a hint of boredom in its eyes. Without hesitation, it used Agility—a pink light, the same color as its sharp fins, shimmered over its body, and its speed increased once again!

Feeling its pursuer picking up even more speed, Poliwag's eyes dimmed with despair.

If only… if only its leader were here.

"Bloop bloop bloop!"

A familiar voice suddenly rang out, and a blue figure leaped into the lake with astonishing speed. At the last second, it swung its tail, striking the attacker and knocking it away.

"Are you alright?!"

Kai's voice followed closely behind. Standing by the lake's edge, Mimikyu extended a shadowy claw into the water and quickly fished out the nearly exhausted Poliwag.

Kai ran his warm hands over the Pokémon, checking for injuries. Once he was sure there were no external wounds, he let out a breath of relief and asked, "Where are your other two teammates?"

Poliwag struggled to open its weary eyes, wanting to point out where its injured companions were. But it was so drained that it couldn't even lift a finger.

"Mimi!"

Mimikyu, who had sharp eyesight, spotted something floating on the lake's surface not far away.

Kai followed its gaze and saw two unconscious Poliwag drifting in the water. Their bodies bore bite marks, deep wounds left by sharp fangs.

And the culprit… was none other than the Pokémon now facing off against Poliwag's leader in the middle of the lake.

Veluza!

A Water/Psychic-type Pokémon. Kai's most vivid memory of it was how, back when he used to farm for Shiny Pokémon in various lakes with Koraidon/Miraidon, he'd constantly get rammed by these things.

Especially that one time when he had stared at the screen for hours, his eyes nearly going blurry—only for a Shiny Finizen to finally appear. But before he could react, a swarm of Veluza, darting around at breakneck speed, had attacked him, causing the Shiny Finizen to despawn right before his eyes.

This Pokémon, along with Galarian Barraskewda, was infamous among players for being an absolute menace in the water—harassing trainers relentlessly.

Mimikyu pulled the two unconscious Poliwag onto land. Seeing their wounds, Kai felt a pang of guilt. He had promised them the farm was safe, yet they had still ended up getting hurt.

Frowning, he held the umbrella over them and took out some medicine to treat their injuries.

Mimikyu sensed Kai's distress and grew agitated. It turned to Veluza, its hidden shadow writhing with anger, ready to lash out and subdue the attacker.

"Bloop bloop!"

Just then, Poliwag, still facing Veluza, called out sharply, stopping Mimikyu in its tracks. Its gaze then shifted to Veluza, filled with fury.

How dare this outsider bully its underlings? There was no way it was letting this slide!

Sensing Poliwag's determination, Kai, who had just finished treating the unconscious Poliwag, stood up. His eyes met Poliwag's resolute gaze, understanding its intent.

Kai spoke firmly, "Mimikyu, take care of the injured. I'll command Poliwag in battle."

The restless shadow beneath Mimikyu froze. Then, as if understanding Kai's decision, it nodded and moved to stand protectively in front of the wounded Poliwag.

Poliwag took a deep breath, locking eyes with Veluza, ready to receive commands.

Kai focused on Veluza, his mind racing through its known abilities and Poliwag's own move pool. He quickly formulated a battle plan.

Poliwag didn't have many moves, and none were particularly strong. Its arsenal consisted of Water Gun, Pound, Bubble Beam, Mud Shot, Haze, Mist, Bounce, and Hypnosis—a fairly basic set.

Moreover, compared to Veluza, which was already fully evolved, Poliwag was at a significant disadvantage in terms of raw stats. This wouldn't be an easy fight—unlike previous battles where they could steamroll opponents, they'd have to rely on strategy to win.

That said, this particular Veluza wasn't overwhelmingly strong. Otherwise, it wouldn't have taken so long to chase down Poliwag earlier. And in this rain, Poliwag's Swift Swim ability meant its speed should at least match Veluza's.

With that in mind, Kai noticed Veluza was getting restless again. He didn't hesitate.

"Bubble Beam!"

At the same moment, Veluza, already having boosted itself earlier with Agility, shot forward like an arrow, its body wrapped in swirling water—its speed increasing even further!

Seeing this, Kai was reminded of all the times he had been relentlessly chased by these things in Casseroya Lake. His expression darkened.

Poliwag quickly spread Bubble Beam across the water's surface, creating a layer of bubbles to hinder Veluza's movements. Then, just as Veluza was about to crash into it, Poliwag abruptly dove underwater and leaped high into the air.

Kai's voice rang out at the perfect moment.

"Haze!"

First things first—strip away Veluza's buffs.

Thick black mist erupted from Poliwag, spreading across the battlefield. Although the downpour and wind quickly tore it apart, the effect had already taken hold—Veluza's speed boost vanished instantly.

Its movements faltered.

The gap between them had narrowed.

Veluza, realizing its advantage had been erased, grew enraged. It suddenly swung its two fleshy side fins, shedding its outer layers and transforming into a sleek, skeletal fish form.

At that moment, its presence surged with aggression.

It had used Fillet Away—sacrificing some of its own HP to sharply boost its Attack, Special Attack, and Speed.

And this time, because it had already experienced Haze once, Veluza was now more cautious. It wouldn't be easy to land another debuff on it.

The difference in power had widened once more.

Kai didn't panic. He took a step back and recalled Poliwag onto the shore. If there was a battlefield advantage to exploit, he intended to use it.

As Poliwag landed on the muddy riverbank, Veluza responded in kind—launching a Aqua Cutter straight at it, the pressurized water slashing through the air like a blade!
