Chapter 14: First Contact
The command center pulsed with quiet urgency. Data streamed across holographic displays, detailing the incoming threat. Every second that passed brought the unknown entities closer to Ethan's hidden base.
The Calm Before the Storm
Ethan moved between his team members, his mind racing. He had built this underground fortress with the idea that no one—not even Earth—could detect it. But something else had.
Michael Reyes adjusted the surveillance drones' feeds. "Drones are in position. They'll give us a full view before the hostiles reach the perimeter."
Laura finished loading the defense grid's systems. "I've programmed the first line of defense to use EMP pulses. If these things rely on any form of electronics, that should disable them—at least temporarily."
Ethan nodded. "Good. We don't shoot to kill—not yet. I want to know what we're dealing with first."
The weight of the moment pressed down on him. They were about to make first contact with intelligent, hostile life. There was no manual for this.
First Visual Contact
The drone feeds flickered to life.
Ethan, Michael, and Laura leaned in. The night vision display showed the red sands shifting. Then, from beneath the surface, something emerged.
It was tall, just as EPS had predicted—easily nine feet in height. Its metallic exoskeleton gleamed under the Martian sky, a dull gunmetal color with intricate glowing blue veins running across its frame. The alien had four arms, two of which ended in razor-sharp appendages, while the other two had clawed hands.
But the most disturbing detail?
Its head turned sharply, looking directly at the drone.
A hollow hum reverberated through the speakers. Then, in a flash, the alien lunged—moving faster than anything that size should be able to move. The screen went black.
Michael cursed. "It just—just ripped the drone apart!"
Before Ethan could respond, another warning flashed.
[WARNING: MULTIPLE CONTACTS DETECTED]
The sand erupted in six different locations. More of them were emerging.
Laura whispered, "It's not just one."
Ethan clenched his fists. "It's an invasion."
The Attack Begins
The ground rumbled beneath them. The defense systems activated as the first wave of aliens breached the perimeter.
A sudden, high-pitched screech blasted through the room as the outer seismic sensors short-circuited. Then—
BOOM!
An explosive impact rocked the underground structure.
"They're trying to dig us out," Michael shouted. "They're attacking the base's foundation!"
Ethan activated the internal comms. "All units, prepare for engagement. We are under attack."
Automated turrets deployed along the underground corridors. The moment one of the creatures broke through, an EMP pulse detonated.
For a brief second, the alien froze mid-step. The blue veins across its body flickered.
"It's working!" Laura said.
But then—it moved again.
Faster. Angrier.
It had adapted.
The alien lunged toward the nearest turret, slicing through it like butter. Sparks flew as the turret collapsed, utterly useless.
Michael stared in horror. "That thing just shrugged off an EMP blast like it was nothing."
Ethan gritted his teeth. This just became a full-scale war.
Unleashing the War Machines
Ethan's mind worked fast. If conventional methods weren't stopping them, he needed something stronger.
"EPS," he commanded, "activate Project Titan."
[ACTIVATING PROJECT TITAN… DEPLOYING PROTOTYPE WAR MECH]
The floor panels in the main hangar shifted, revealing a towering bipedal war mech, fully armed and AI-assisted. Its dual plasma cannons whirred to life, its energy shields crackling with raw power.
Ethan turned to his team. "This is our best shot. We hold them here."
The battle for Mars had just begun.
