Chapter 4

Those who knew about such things just glanced and shook their heads.

"Someone put a curse in the grave"

As I listened, my breathing became more and more rapid.

Back then, when I was in agonizing mental anguish, it was Lorne who personally buried the other half of the child's ashes.

He couldn't possibly not have known.

"Brianna, Mommy's here. Mommy's late, I'm sorry."

"Are you scared down there? Are you lost? Wait for Mommy."

I kept slapping myself, filled with regret.

When I confronted Lorne with all of this, he and Scarlett were still in the throes of passion in the bedroom.

Scarlett came out first, and seeing what I held in my hands, she burst out laughing.

"So you know everything now."

"But what difference does that make?Three years have passed, and that little beast's soul has likely long since dissipated."

My eyes were red, almost dripping blood.

She continued, "Let me tell you a secret. Your son didn't just accidentally fall into the water."

"It was me. I told him Lorne was in the water, and if he wanted to find her, he should go underwater."

Hearing this, my mind went blank.

My body felt like rotten wood, darkness burying all the light in my world.

"He was so stupid, he actually went in."

"You know, he thrashed around for a long time, yelling, 'Auntie help!', 'Daddy help!', 'Mommy help!', but no one came. I just watched him slowly sink down and die. I even have a video here. Do you want to see it?"

So my child didn't accidentally fall in after all.

I had always taught him to stay away from danger, and he had obediently agreed.

She killed him! It was Scarlett!

I choked up, too pained to speak a coherent sentence.

"He was only three years old! You... monster, doesn't your conscience hurt at all?"

So that's why she found a priest to suppress the wronged spirit, to make my child's soul-destroying.

"If Lorne knew, he wouldn't let you off the hook.Scarlett retorted, "Lorne couldn't care less. After all, he's the one who hired the master chef."

I broke down screaming, like I'd lost my mind.

Brianna admired and envied her pilot dad so much that all her toys were airplane models.

And yet, this very same dad...

Had his soul completely shattered.

Lorne had no right to be a child's father.

"Oh, by the way, I'm pregnant. My child with him will erase all traces of your little brat."

My gaze fell to her stomach.

That's right, Lorne had nothing but hatred left for me.

When Lorne came out wrapped in a towel, he was met with my sorrowful expression.

"Dashiell, what are you going crazy about now?"

"Don't you want me dead? I'll make your wish come true."

Lorne sneered, "Even if you die, I won't feel an ounce of pain."

Fine, then I don't need to feel guilty anymore either.

A few days later, Lorne accompanied Scarlett to the hospital for a prenatal check-up.

"Lorne, do you hope the baby is a boy or a girl?Lorne's expression changed subtly, his voice cool and detached.

"A girl, I suppose."

If it were a boy, he feared the child might overlap with Brianna in his mind.

That way, Dashiell might truly go insane.

Scarlett pouted, "But I want a boy."

They ran into my private doctor face-to-face.

The doctor greeted them with a smile.

"Mr. Warwick, how's your wife doing? She hasn't been in for a check-up in a week."

Lorne was utterly bewildered.

"What are you talking about?"

The doctor spoke, perplexed: "Didn't she tell you? She's in the late stages of brain cancer."

Lorne's voice turned harsh: "Say that again!"

"Your wife, late-stage brain cancer."
